Antikythira Bird Observatory (ABO) ABO is run by the Hellenic Ornithological Society / BirdLife Greece on the island of Antikythera. The Observatory was founded with the support of the "A. G.

Its key objectives are the monitoring and study of bird migration. The operational area of the Observatory apart from the island of Antikythira is the wider maritime area around the island, as well as the two adjacent islets Pouri and Lagouvardos. The Hellenic Ornithological Society operates on the island since 1997, but the establishment of the Antikythera Bird Observatory took place in 2000. Fro

Άλλη μία ανοιξιάτικη σεζόν στον Ορνιθολογικό Σταθμό Αντικυθήρων έφτασε επίσημα στο τέλος της. Τα δίχτυα μαζεύτηκαν, οι τελευταίοι εθελοντές πήραν το πλοίο της επιστροφής και ο ΟΣΑ έκλεισε τις πόρτες του για το καλοκαίρι, έχοντας φτάσει συνολικά τα 5.714 δακτυλιωμένα πουλιά!

Οι τελευταίες ημέρες στο νησί, αν και πιο ήρεμες, δεν μας απογοήτευσαν. Το ⭐️highlight που μας έφτιαξε την εβδομάδα ήταν μια νεαρή Ροδόσπιζα (Carpodacus erythrinus), ενώ η αυλαία της σεζόν έκλεισε με τον πιο πολύχρωμο τρόπο: τη δακτυλίωση 13 Μελισσοφάγων (Merops apiaster) την τελευταία και μόνο ημέρα.

Όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο για τα τέλη του Μάη, το σκηνικό στα δίχτυα μας διαμορφώθηκε από τους τυπικούς «όψιμους» της άνοιξης, με πιο κοινά είδη την Οχροστριτσίδα (Iduna pallida), την Κιτρινοστριτσίδα (Hippolais icterina), τον Κηποτσιροβάκο (Sylvia borin) και τον Σταχτομυγοχάφτη (Muscicapa striata).

🙏 Ένα τεράστιο ευχαριστώ σε όσους στήριξαν, προσέφεραν τον χρόνο τους, κουράστηκαν και έζησαν μαζί μας αυτή την ανοιξιάτικη περιπέτεια!

Another spring season at the Antikythera Bird Observatoy has officially come to an end. The nets have been closed, the last volunteers have boarded the ferry back home, and ABO has closed its doors for the summer, having reached a total of 5,714 ringed birds!

The final days on the island, though quieter, certainly did not disappoint. The ⭐️highlight that made our week was a young Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), while the curtain fell on the season in the most colorful way possible: the ringing of 13 European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) on the very last day.

As expected for late May, the activity in our nets was shaped by the typical late spring migrants, with the most common species being the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler (Iduna pallida), the Icterine Warbler (Hippolais icterina), the Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin), and the Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata).

Καθώς η ανοιξιάτικη σεζόν πλησιάζει προς το τέλος της, οι αριθμοί των πουλιών στα δίχτυα μας έχουν μειωθεί αρκετά, χωρίς όμως αυτό να σημαίνει πως οι εκπλήξεις σταματούν, οδηγώντας μας συνολικά στα 5.415 δακτυλιωμένα πουλιά.

Συνεχίζουμε να καταγράφουμε μεγάλους αριθμούς από Κηποτσιροβάκους (Sylvia borin), οι οποίοι παίρνουν την πρωτιά για το πιο κοινό είδος με 722 άτομα. Παράλληλα, πολλοί Συκοφάγοι (Oriolus oriolus) και Μελισσοφάγοι (Merops apiaster) συνεχίζουν να εντυπωσιάζουν με τα χρώματά τους, σημειώνοντας 150 και 147 άτομα αντίστοιχα, ενώ σιγά-σιγά κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους όλο και περισσότερα Χωραφοσπουργίτια (Passer hispaniolensis), είδος που αναπαράγεται στο νησί.

Οι τελευταίες μέρες μας επιφύλασσαν και μερικές ιδιαίτερες συναντήσεις. Είχαμε την τύχη να δακτυλιώσουμε ακόμα δύο Αμπελουργούς (Emberiza melanocephala), ενώ οι πιο αξιοσημείωτες καταγραφές της εβδομάδας είναι αναμφίβολα μία Ασπροκωλίνα (Oenanthe melanoleuca) και ένας Μικροτσικνιάς (Ixobrychus minutus).

Μπαίνοντας στο τελευταίο 10ήμερο του προγράμματος, ευελπιστούμε σε ακόμη περισσότερες εκπλήξεις!

As the spring season draws to a close, the number of birds caught in our nets has decreased significantly; however, this does not mean the surprises have stopped, bringing our total to 5,415 ringed birds.

We continue to record high numbers of Garden Warblers (Sylvia borin), which take first place as the most common species with 722 individuals. At the same time, many Eurasian Golden Orioles (Oriolus oriolus) and European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) continue to impress us with their vibrant colors, reaching 150 and 147 individuals respectively. Meanwhile, more and more Spanish Sparrows (Passer hispaniolensis),a species that breeds on the island, are gradually making their appearance.

The last few days also held some special encounters for us. We were fortunate enough to ring two more Black-headed Buntings (Emberiza melanocephala), while the most noteworthy captures of the week are undoubtedly an Eastern Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe melanoleuca) and a Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus).

As we enter the final ten days of the program, we look forward to even more surprises!

🌍🐦 Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Μεταναστευτικών Πουλιών!

Από τον Ορνιθολογικό Σταθμό Αντικυθήρων, όπου παρακολουθούμε ζωντανά την ανοιξιάτικη μετανάστευση, γιορτάζουμε τα χιλιάδες μεταναστευτικά πουλιά που διασχίζουν τεράστια απόσταση από τις περιοχές διαχείμασης στην Αφρική έως τις περιοχές αναπαραγωγής τους στην Ελλάδα και την υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη!

Εδώ και μια εικοσαετία, η ομάδα μας και οι εθελοντές παρακολουθούμε τη μετανάστευση στα Αντικύθηρα, έναν κρίσιμο ενδιάμεσο μεταναστευτικό σταθμό για τα πουλιά στη Ανατολική Μεσόγειο.

Δεκαδες Χιλιάδες πουλιά έχουν δακτυλιωθεί στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος μας που μας βοηθούν να εντοπίζουμε ετήσιες και εποχικές πλυσθμιακές μεταβολές, να κατανοήσουμε τις μετακινήσεις, και τον χρόνο μετανάστευσης καθώς και πιθανές απειλές που μπορεί να αντιμετωπίζουν.

Η σημερινή ημέρα μας υπενθυμίζει πόσο σημαντική είναι η προστασία των μεταναστευτικών πουλιών και των ενδιαιτημάτων τους.

Το προσωπικό και οι εθελοντές μας από τον σταθμό στέλνουν τις ευχές τους με ένα ιδιαίτερο μήνυμα: «Χαρούμενη Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Μεταναστευτικών Πουλιών!»

🌍🐦 World Migratory Bird Day!

From Antikythera Bird Observatory, where we are currently monitoring the spring migration live, we celebrate the thousands of migratory birds traveling vast distances from their wintering grounds in Africa to their breeding sites in Greece and across Europe!

For two decades, our team and dedicated volunteers have been tracking migration on Antikythera, a critical migratory stopover in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Tens of thousands of birds have been ringed through our program. This work allows us to identify annual and seasonal population shifts, understand movement patterns and migration timing, and detect potential threats the birds may encounter.

Today serves as a powerful reminder of how vital it is to protect migratory birds and their habitats.

Our staff and volunteers at the station send their warmest wishes with a special message: "Happy World Migratory Bird Day!"

Together, we continue our efforts for the monitoring, study, protection, and safe passage of migratory birds!

Μπήκε ο Μάιος και στον Ορνιθολογικό Σταθμό των Αντικυθήρων συνεχίζουμε καθημερινά τις δραστηριότητές μας. Αν και όσο πλησιάζουμε προς το καλοκαίρι δεχόμαστε όλο και μικρότερους αριθμούς πουλιών, οι εκπλήξεις στα δίχτυα μας δε σταματάνε και σήμερα φτάσαμε τα 4491 δακτυλιωμένα πουλιά .

Ο Κηποτσιροβάκος (Sylvia borin), όπως αναμένονταν, είναι το πιο κοινό είδος αυτές τις μέρες, ενώ τα Γιδοβύζια (Caprimulgus europaeus) σπάσανε το ημερήσιο ρεκόρ με εννιά άτομα. Σιγά σιγά τα Χωραφοσπουργίτια (Passer hispaniolensis) κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους, ενώ εκτός από Κοκκινοκεφαλάδες (Lanius senator) είχαμε και τρεις επισκέψεις από Αετομάχους (Lanius collurio), είδος που κατά κανόνα ακολουθεί πιο ανατολική μεταναστευτική διαδρομή.

Αξιοσημείωτη καταγραφή για την εβδομάδα που διανύουμε είναι ένα Διπλομπεκάτσινο (Gallinago media), είδος που δεν παρατηρείται εύκολα στην Ελλάδα και είχε χρόνια να εμφανιστεί στα Αντικύθηρα. Είδη που είναι κοινά αλλά δεν δακτυλιώνονται συχνά στο νησί όπως ο Μαυροτσιροβάκος (Curruca melanocephala), ο Αμπελουργός (Emberiza melanocephala) και το το Οχθοχελίδονο (Riparia riparia), ενώ είχαμε και την πρώτη επανασύλληψη δακτυλιωμένου πουλιού από το εξωτερικό, μία Σχοινοποταμίδα (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) από την Σλοβακία.

Ανυπομονούμε να δούμε πως θα κλείσει η ανοιξιάτικη σεζόν!

May has arrived and at the Antikythera Bird Observatory we continue our activities every day. Although as we approach summer we receive smaller and smaller numbers of birds, the surprises in our nets do not stop and today we reached 4491 ringed birds.

The Garden Warlbler (Sylvia borin), as expected, is the most common species these days, while the Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) broke the daily record with nine individuals. Little by little, the Spanish Sparrows (Passer hispaniolensis) make their appearance, while in addition to Woodchat shrikes (Lanius senator) we also had three visits by Red-backed shrikes (Lanius collurio), a species that usually follows a more easterly migratory route.

A remarkable record for the current week is a Great Snipe (Gallinago media), a species that is not easily observed in Greece and has not appeared in Antikythera for years. Species that are common but not often ringed on the island such as the Sardinian warbler (Curruca melanocephala), the Black-headed bunting (Emberiza melanocephala) and the Sand martin (Riparia riparia), while we also had the first recapture of ringed poly from abroad, a Sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) from Slovakia.

We can't wait to see how the spring season ends!

Among the commoner passerines that make up the main bulk of the birds ringed at our station we are occasionally treated to some different species that we don't often see in the hand.

The past few days we had a few surprises with Wood Sandpipers and a female Little Crake ringed which were already a treat, as water is scarce on the island and the prescence of such species is rather irregular, but the definite ⭐️star of today's ringing session was a Great Snipe, a species we haven't ringed in more than 10 years!

Ανάμεσα στα πιο κοινά στρουθιόμορφα που αποτελούν τον κύριο όγκο των πτηνών που δακτυλιώνονται στον σταθμό μας, έχουμε την ευκαιρία να δούμε περιστασιακά κάποια διαφορετικά είδη που δεν συναντάμε συχνά .
Τις τελευταίες ημέρες είχαμε μερικές εκπλήξεις με τη δακτυλίωση Λασπότρυγγων και μιας θηλυκής Νανοπουλάδας, κάτι που ήταν ήδη μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη αλλά το ⭐️αποκορύφωμα των σημερινών δακτυλιώσεων ήταν ένα Διπλομπεκάτσινο, είδος που έχουμε να δακτυλιώσουμε πάνω από 10 χρόνια!

Καθώς ο Απρίλης πλησιάζει προς το τέλος του, νέοι εθελοντές φτάνουν στα Αντικύθηρα για να συμμετέχουν στις δακτυλιώσεις των μεταναστευτικών πουλιών. Αν και την τελευταία εβδομάδα οι αριθμοί των νέων καταγραφών μας δεν ήταν υψηλοί, μετά την μικρή και σύντομη κακοκαιρία της Παρασκευής, τα δίχτυα μας γέμισαν για άλλη μια φορά με πουλιά από διάφορα είδη.

Το ποιο κοινό είδος είναι ο Μαυρομυγοχάφτης (Ficedula hypoleuca) με 531 καταγραφές, ενώ η Δεντροκελάδα (Anthus trivialis) και ο Ανατολικός Κοκκινοτσιροβάκος (Sylvia cantillans) ακολουθούν με με 481 και 288 καταγραφές αντίστοιχα.

Οι Συκοφάγοι (Oriolus oriolus) και οι Μελισσοφάγοι (Merops apiaster) έχουν αρχίσει και γίνονται όλο και πιο συχνοί επισκέπτες στο Σταθμό, ενώ ένα μεγάλο κύμα Κοκκινοκεφαλάδων (Lanius senator) έχει κάνει την εμφάνισή του, σημειώνοντας 50 νέες καταγραφές μόλις σε δύο μέρες.

Αυτή η εβδομάδα ήταν ιδιαίτερη για εμάς, γιατί εκτός του ότι ξεπεράσαμε τις 3000 καταγραφές, καταφέραμε να πιάσουμε και έναν αρσενικό Λιβαδόκιρκο (Circus pygargus) που πετούσε πάνω από τα δίχτυα αναζητώντας το επόμενο θήραμά του.

As April draws to a close, new volunteers are arriving on Antikythera to take part in the ringing of migratory birds. Although the number of new records was not very high during the past week, after the brief bad weather we had on Friday, our nets were once again filled with birds of various species.

The most common species is the European Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) with 531 records, followed by the Tree Pipit (Anthus trivialis) and the Western Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans) with 481 and 288 records respectively.

Golden Orioles (Oriolus oriolus) and European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) are becoming increasingly frequent visitors to the station, while a large wave of Woodchat Shrikes (Lanius senator) has appeared, with 50 new records in just two days.

This week was particularly special for us, as not only did we surpass 3,000 records, but we also managed to capture a male Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus), which had been flying over the nets in search of its next prey.

Ο Ορνιθολογικός Σταθμός Αντικυθήρων είναι επίσημα ανοιχτός από τις 26 Μαρτίου, συμπληρώνοντας σήμερα 20 μέρες δακτυλιώσεων. Οι πρώτοι εθελοντές του σταθμού έρχονται σε καθημερινή επαφή με τα πουλιά, εξοικειώνονται με τα διαφορετικά είδη και μαθαίνουν πώς να τα αναγνωρίζουν, ενώ μέσω της δράσης των δακτυλιώσεων ανακαλύπτουν περισσότερα για την μετανάστευση.

Αν και οι ισχυροί αέρηδες και η βροχή δεν δημιούργησαν κατάλληλες συνθήκες για τις δράσεις μας όλες τις ημέρες, το Σαββατοκύριακο του Πάσχα ένα μεγάλο κύμα μεταναστευτικών πουλιών πέρασε από το νησί σημειώνοντας 786 καταγραφές.

Μέχρι στιγμής το ποιο κοινό είδος είναι η Δεντροκελάδα (Anthus trivialis) με 375 καταγραφές, με τον Μαυρομυγοχάφτη (Ficedula hypoleuca) και τον Ανατολικό Κοκκινοτσιροβάκο (Sylvia cantillans) να ακολουθούν με 359 και 257 καταγραφές αντίστοιχα.

Οι πιο αξιοσημείωτες καταγραφές μας είναι ο Καστανοφυλλοσκόπος (Phylloscopus fuscatus), με την 7η καταγραφή για την Ελλάδα, ο Χρυσοβασιλίσκος (Regulus regulus), το μικρότερο πουλί της Ευρώπης, το Φρυγανοτσίχλονο (Emberiza caesia), ο Μελωδοτσιροβάκος (Curruca crassirostris) και ο Αμμοπετροκλής (Oenanthe isabelline).

Φυσικά δεν μας ξεφεύγει και ότι γίνεται στον ουρανό. Αρκετά ζευγάρια κιάλια και τηλεσκόπια παρατήρησης πουλιών είναι στραμμένα ψηλά, εντοπίζοντας τον πρώτο Μαυροπετρίτη (Falco eleonorae) για φέτος, 10 ημέρες νωρίτερα από το 2025.

Antikythera Bird Observatory has been officially open since March 26, marking 20 days of ringing today. The first volunteers of the station are in daily contact with the birds, becoming familiar with the different species and learning how to identify them, while through ringing activities they discover more about migration.

Although the strong winds and rain did not create suitable conditions for our actions on all days, over the Easter weekend a large wave of migratory birds passed through the island, with 786 records.

So far, the most common species is the Tree Pipit (Anthus trivialis) with 375 records, followed by the Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the Eastern Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans) with 359 and 257 records respectively.

Our most notable records are the Dusky Warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus), marking the seventh record for Greece, the Goldcrest (Regulus regulus), the smallest bird in Europe, the Cretzschmar’s Bunting (Emberiza caesia), the Eastern Orphean Warbler (Curruca crassirostris) and the Isabelline Wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina).

Of course, what happens in the sky cannot escape us. Several pairs of binoculars and birdwatching telescopes are pointed high, spotting the first Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) for this year, ten days earlier than 2025.

Easter day today in Greece, which was celebrated with close to 350 ringed birds of 30 sps. The bird of the day was the 7th record of Dusky Warbler in Greece coupled with an Isabelline Wheatear we rarely get to ring.

Πάσχα σήμερα, γιορτάστηκε στον ΟΣΑ με σχεδόν 350 δακτυλιωμένα πουλιά από 30 είδη.
Το πουλί της ημέρας ήταν η 7η καταγραφή για την Ελλάδα ενός Καστανοφυλλοσκόπου (Phylloscopus fuscatus), μαζί με έναν Αμμοπετρόκλη, είδος που σπάνια έχουμε την ευκαιρία να δακτυλιώσουμε.

Spring 2026: Eleonora’s Falcon Monitoring

In addition to a decent ringing session, we also recorded the first Eleonora’s Falcon observation of the season. These observations represent the earliest records of the species ever documented on the island.
The bulk of the population is expected to return to Antikythera during the last days of April.

O πρώτος #Μαυροπετρίτης της φετινής περιόδου παρατηρήθηκε στα #Αντικύθηρα!
Οι παρατηρήσεις αυτές αποτελούν τις πιο πρώιμες (τεκμηριωμένες) καταγραφές του είδους στο νησί.

Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του πληθυσμού αναμένεται να επιστρέψει στα Αντικύθηρα προς το τέλος Απριλίου.

Spring Observatory — 2026 Monitoring Project Update!

Our spring monitoring project has been up and running since Thursday, and we’re excited to see the first wave of Volunteers from all across Europe and even further away joining us!

The weather hasn’t been on our side so far — strong winds and rain have made conditions challenging — but the team is pushing through with great spirit.

Το ανοιξιάτικο πρόγραμμα παρακολούθησης στον Ορνιθολογικό Σταθμό Αντικυθήρων έχει ξεκινήσει από την Πέμπτη και είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι που υποδεχόμαστε το πρώτο κύμα εθελοντών από όλη την Ευρώπη κι ακόμη παραπέρα!
