💔 Sad news from Corfu Donkey Rescue 💔

✨ RIP Rita (Lucy) ✨

🌟 We are very sorry to announce that, after a brave battle, our little Rita passed away.

🩺 Our vet visited from the mainland and gave various medications, a drip, oil to help her p**p etc. etc. etc. but we couldn't save her.

🫏 Colic is a killer and needs to be acted on as soon as possible. Rita had various ailments and she just wasn't strong enough to fight them.

💔 She wasn't with us for long but we will miss her greatly.

🙏🏼 Thank you so, so much to those who donated towards her emergency care. Our supporters are the best.

🏡 Any remaining funds will be used for her funeral.

🌈 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at least little Rita is now pain free.

✨🌟 ✨ LUCY (HOPE) UPDATE ✨🌟✨

🙏🏼 We have very kindly been sent more information about the donkey brought from near Lefkimmi, from yesterday's post.

🫏 Her name is/was Rita.

🌱 The owner, an older lady, had her for ten years and used to get her to bring bags down to her land to help her plant things and take things home. She hasn't done it for a few years because she felt she didn't want the donkey to continue working. The lady spent the majority of her days spending time with this donkey, and Rita followed her around.

🌡️ Recently, the donkey became ill. She was down and didn't want to eat and couldn't get up without help and in the last few weeks she was limping.

🫴🏽 The owner had sadly been feeding Rita the wrong foods (too much of certain foods can cause laminitis and colic) however, these foods are the ones that donkeys love so she thought she was being kind.

💔 Rita was seen to have colic and very clear laminitis. One foot was very long and the other she was walking on her tiptoes. But more importantly, she had colic. The owner didn't know how to help, but she was sitting by Rita's side swatting flies off her for hours while she laid down, and kept a sheet over her.

📞 A call was made (co-incidentally) to our vet on the mainland who gave immediate steps to try to help Rita.

⚒️ A farrier came a couple of days later to trim her feet. When it was explained to the lady what laminitis is she was very upset that she might have caused Rita to have it.

💉 Rita was given some pain relief and the owner decided that her best chance of survival was for her to be transferred to CDR for immediate care.

💔 The lady was pretty devastated and didn't want to lose the donkey, but ultimately, she made the right decision for Rita.

🙏🏼 The fact remains that Rita/Lucy is in a lot of pain and does need immediate veterinary care. Your donations are how we can make this happen.

🙏🏼💔‼️ HELP ‼️💔🙏🏼

🚛 This beautiful girl arrived at Corfu Donkey Rescue yesterday from Lefkimmi. We don't have a great deal of information other than she is around 20 years old, her owner no longer wanted her and she is not in good condition. 💔

💉 Her hooves were trimmed immediately and she has been given some medications but she has blood in her urine so we are worried for her kidneys. 🩸

👩🏽‍⚕️ We have arranged for our vet to come over from the mainland, hopefully she will be here tomorrow and can give us some answers as to how sick she is and what we can do to fix her. 🩹

👋👋Meet our beautiful new boy 'Lefko'! 😍

🫏He is a mule and he arrived from Lefkimmi, Corfu on 24th September and was placed in one of the stables until he settled in to his new surroundings. 🚛

👴Sadly the elderly owner was unable to look after him any more and wanted him to have a good life at Corfu Donkey Rescue. 🥰

🫣It became clear quite quickly that he was not used to humans and was a bit overwhelmed by all the visitors that wanted to say 'hello' and give him a brush. 🙋‍♂️👫🏃‍♀️

🚶‍♀️🫏So we moved him into our back field along with the hooligans and he seems much happier out there. ✨

We will let you know how he is getting on. 👀

‼️😳🫶 We now have a need for headcollars and horse snacks!! 🫶😳‼️

🫣 Our donkeys and other animals are SO demanding! And we realise that the holiday season is coming to an end, but our hooligan donkeys keep destroying each others headcollars!! 😬

🇩🇪 We have added them to our Amazon Wish Lists in both Germany and in the UK 🇬🇧. Just search Amazon for Corfu Donkey, or you can of course source the items from a different shop. 🛒

📦 We are working on a way for you to be able to post items directly to us from WITHIN THE EU ONLY - we cannot accept UK or other parcels for the foreseeable future. 📮 We will let you know the details when this is possible. But for now you would need to bring the items over in your case. 🧳

❌❌🍪 ALERT!! GINGER NUT AND POLO MINT OVERLOAD!! 🍪 ❌❌

🍪🐴 We had a phenomenal response to our appeal for ginger nuts and polo mints. And we now have enough to get us through the winter. Thank you so much! We asked and you delivered!! 🐴🍪

EDIT: if you already bought us some and are just waiting to bring them then you can still bring them. We just don't want anyone to buy anymore at the moment 🙏🏼❤️
