🛠 Rebolt Report from November 7 and 10, 2025

It’s been a few weeks since our last update, but the drills haven’t been quiet.

On November 7, Niels Abegglen spent the day at Summertime and Magoulias, completing the following work:

* TONI 6c: All bolts on the route were replaced due to age and a missing 5th bolt. A second carabiner was added at the anchor.

* SALBEI 6a: Installed a dedicated anchor and added a new 1st bolt because the original was too high.

* FRIENDS 6b+: Added a new carabiner to the anchor (a “pig tail”) and added a new 1st bolt because the original was too high.

* DILL 6a: Replaced both worn fixed carabiners at the anchor.

On November 10, Niels Abegglen and Maria Glinatsi carried out maintenance at Poets:

* KAROUBALO 6b: Replaced a very loose 10th bolt.

* MUSTASS 6a: Replaced one worn fixed carabiner at the anchor.

* STYX 6a+: Replaced one worn fixed carabiner at the anchor.

* OREADS 6a+: Added a second carabiner to the anchor.

* REINS BEAUX 6c: Replaced two aluminum carabiners at the anchor with stainless steel carabiners.

We are grateful to all our volunteers for keeping Kalymnos climbing safe. Maintenance will continue throughout the winter on a reduced schedule. If you appreciate the team’s time and effort, the best way to support it is by donating. Link in bio 💛

A little appreciation post 🙏
Tim is one of many returning climbers who quietly support the island and the work we do.

Seeing him proudly wearing his Rebolt Kalymnos T-shirt was a reminder of how much this community contributes, through enthusiasm, kindness, and continued support.

To Tim, and to everyone who keeps coming back and giving back in their own way: Thank you. You truly make a difference. 💛

"Rebolt Kalymnos has been very active in the last months... Their next big project is to rebolt all 34 routes at sector Kasteli (not including two routes that were already recently rebolted). Rebolt Kalymnos is a registered Greek non-profit. Funding for all the work comes from donations, sales of the Rebolt Kalymnos T-shirt, and some bolt donations from hardware manufacturers. In practice, there are a handful of volunteers, who spend most of the year on the island, doing most of the work. They also run board meetings to decide important issues. Throughout the year, they have tried to get in contact with the local municipality regarding a government-funded rebolting project, without success."

🛠 Rebolt Report from October 24 and 29, 2025

Last week, Niels Abegglen and Mamen Larraz fixed various issues at two of the island’s most popular crags, Sea Breeze and Arginonta.

Sea Breeze Main / Left:

• KARLOMANOS 5a: Added a 2nd biner to the anchor.

• DROSIA 5a: Replaced the worn fixed carabiner at the anchor.

• GLAROS 4c+: Replaced the worn fixed biner at the anchor.

Sea Breeze Main / Right:

• HERA 5c+: All rusty hangers were replaced. The original hangers on this old route (2003) were from a batch manufactured by Fixe later known to develop extensive surface rust, as seen in the photos. (In contrast, the bolts were still in great shape.) One bolt did have to be replaced in the middle section, as it was placed on bad rock. Furthermore, two additional bolts were placed at the start of the route to prevent injury in case of a fall. Lastly, a suspect block with a white X-mark was glued in place (it was not possible to remove).

• TIR Ô PIGEONS 6b+: One bolt was moved to a better position (otherwise the carabiner could potentially break in case of a fall).

• EOS 6a: Replaced worn fixed biner at the anchor.

• BEGINNINGS 3c: Replaced fixed biner at the anchor. The previous one was impossible to open.

Arginonta:

• NO BLABLA, DO IT! 4b (Holiday left): Added carabiner at the anchor (there was none) and tightened loose nuts at the anchor.

• NO SLEEP ’TIL HAMMERSMITH 7a+ (Infrared Wall right): Nut/hanger were missing from the 1st bolt. A new bolt was installed in a better spot.

Shoutout to and for their work, and thanks for the photos and videos, !

Rebolt Kalymnos calls for transparency from the Municipality of Kalymnos about a government-funded rebolting project already underway.

Since April, we’ve repeatedly asked for basic details: which routes are included, who manages the work, what materials are being used, and the project timeline. None of these questions have been answered.

The Rebolt Kalymnos team is at the crags every day, maintaining routes to the highest international standards and addressing safety issues in real time. That daily presence gives us both the insight and responsibility to seek clarity when public work affects the same routes we care for.

We believe that transparency and collaboration are essential for climber safety, for the island, and for the future of climbing on Kalymnos.

🛠 Rebolt Report · October 3, 2025

On Friday, Oct 3rd, Aris Theodoropoulos and Hannes Webhofer replaced another cracked anchor ring at sector Griffig, this time on the route SAUNA AM SEE 6b+.

As a precaution, they also replaced six additional anchors on the sector’s far left, even though those anchors were not showing any signs of cracking. The new anchors use either unwelded rings (no seam) or two bolts with carabiners.

Routes with new anchors:

* 8610 3c
* USTER 4c
* LOVE SOMEONE 6b
* SAUNA AM SEE 6b+
* LEO 5a
* GLÜEWIH DELÜX 5b
* MATHIS ON THE ROAD 5c

These rings were all part of a batch of problematic welded rings prone to cracking at the seam. Following a directive by on how to identify anchor rings from this batch, Team Rebolt acted preemptively to replace them.

Before Rebolt Kalymnos, individual volunteers could realistically only respond to bolt failures and other very urgent maintenance needs. But now, thanks to your support, our team is able to carry out preventative rebolting like this, which is hugely important. Thank you for helping us keep Kalymnos safe.

⚠️ Reminder: When anchors or bolts fail, we do our best to respond immediately, but issues can still occur. Always pay attention to anchors and bolts. If an anchor looks suspect, leave two of your own carabiners (one at each bolt) for lowering, and report any issues to us so we can dispatch the team.

Special thanks to Aris and Hannes. We all feel safer in your experienced hands.

🛠 Rebolt Report · September 21–26, 2025

Team Rebolt completed some important maintenance in sectors Grande Grotta and Trois Îlots:

1. Grande Grotta

Hannes Webhofer and Magnus Wiklund rebolted two of the short easy routes in the depths of the cave:

* HAPPY GIRLFRIEND 6a: replaced several rusty bolts.

* ELEFANTENHIMMEL PART 1 5a: corrected old bolting (from 2001) and installed a new anchor. Previously, the anchor was placed quite a long way away and to the left of the last glue-in bolt. Two additional bolts and a new anchor straight up from there have made the line safer for both leading and top-roping. “You can finally see the climber clipping the anchor; before, you couldn’t.”

2. Trois Îlots

Niels Abegglen and Maria Glinatsi responded to a report of a broken bolt on GABOU 6b. The bolt had broken off leaving streaks of rust on the rock. Niels and Maria replaced the missing bolt and removed the remaining hangers to check the route’s other bolts. GABOU was bolted only about ten years ago, and none of the other bolts had visible signs of rust. Upon inspection, other nearby routes also appeared to be in good shape.

Niels and Maria also added new fixed carabiners on the anchors of MINION 5c and JOLIE EMILIE 5c .

Lastly, on PROSCIUTTO AND CHAMPAGNE 6a, loose blocks were fixed with glue on both sides after they proved impossible to remove, despite multiple attempts.

⚠️ Reminder: Though broken bolts are rare, they still do happen. Always pay attention. If something on a route looks or feels unsafe, do not climb it. Report any issues to us so Team Rebolt can check them.

🛠 Rebolt Report from the week of September 15, 2025

The three short routes at Kasteli’s Back Cave were rebolted this week by Magnus Wiklund. These obscure lines date back to 2002, and at 8 meters or less (essentially roped boulders), they are rarely climbed.

Magnus says: “The routes BAMBOLA BLUE (traversing left, 6 bolts + anchor, 7b) and KROTDEBIKI (straight up, 5 bolts + anchor, 7b) were poorly marked on the wall. I changed them quite a bit and added a few bolts for safety. The third line, A KAPELLA, was not really a route, so I removed the few bolts and anchor. Now, there are two clear lines of decent quality.”

At Rebolt Kalymnos, one of our main goals is to make sure every single route on the island is in safe condition. Your support allows us to work not only on the classics but also on the obscure lines. For somebody, they might be a favorite.

Big thanks to Magnus for the work and to Hannes for flagging the routes 🔧
