🌱💚 How do we monitor the health of a Posidonia meadow?

Every Posidonia survey starts long before entering the water.

🗺️ First, survey sites are selected and divided into cells. Within each cell, nine random quadrat locations are generated to ensure unbiased and comparable results every year.

📝 Before the dive, the team prepares the survey slates, coordinates, compass bearings, dive teams and reviews the survey plan during the briefing.

🤿 Underwater, divers use a 50 × 50 cm quadrat, a survey slate, an underwater compass and a DSMB to navigate between sampling points.

🌿 At each quadrat, every Posidonia shoot is counted, while additional observations such as water temperature, meadow continuity, invasive species, signs of anchoring and other environmental pressures are also recorded.

📊 By repeating the same standardized protocol every year, we can monitor the health of Posidonia meadows and help protect these valuable Mediterranean ecosystems.

🌱💚 Πώς παρακολουθούμε την υγεία των λιβαδιών της Ποσειδωνίας;

How do we monitor the health of a Posidonia meadow?

📆 Every year, Kosamare surveys Posidonia meadows around Fiskardo using a standardized scientific protocol developed in collaboration with the Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.) of Greece ΟΦΥΠΕΚΑ / NECCA

📐 At each survey site, divers place a 50 × 50 cm quadrat at randomly selected locations and count the number of Posidonia shoots inside. Shoot density is one of the most reliable indicators of meadow health.

💦 Divers also record environmental parameters such as water temperature, invasive species, meadow clearings, and other signs of environmental pressure.

📊 By repeating the same survey every year, we can track changes over time and provide valuable data to support the conservation of these unique Mediterranean ecosystems 🌿🌞

Πώς παρακολουθούμε την υγεία των λιβαδιών της Ποσειδωνίας;

🌱 Why is Posidonia so important?

Posidonia meadows are among the Mediterranean’s most valuable ecosystems, providing essential benefits for both marine life and coastal communities.

They provide food, shelter and nursery grounds for hundreds of marine species, supporting an incredible diversity of life beneath the surface.

Like plants on land, Posidonia uses photosynthesis to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and release oxygen, which is why it is often referred to as the “lungs of the Mediterranean.”

It is also a remarkable natural carbon sink. Through its roots and rhizomes, Posidonia builds up a thick underground layer called the matte, where carbon can remain stored in the seabed for centuries—even millennia. This natural process is known as Blue Carbon.

By stabilising the seabed and trapping suspended particles, Posidonia also helps maintain clear, healthy coastal waters.

💙 Protecting Posidonia means protecting biodiversity, our coastlines, and the future of the Mediterranean .

🌱 Γιατί είναι τόσο σημαντική η Ποσειδωνία;

Meet Posidonia 🌿
You’ve probably called it “seaweed”… but Posidonia oceanica isn’t seaweed at all. It’s a flowering marine plant, also known as Neptune grass. Just like plants on land, it has roots, leaves, flowers, and even fruits.
What makes it even more special? Posidonia is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It grows naturally nowhere else on Earth, and every meadow supports a unique ecosystem found only in the Mediterranean.
The next time you dive over a Posidonia meadow, remember: you are not swimming above seaweed, you are exploring one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable habitats 💚

What do Monk Seals look like?

These short haired pinnipeds have dark grey/ brown or black hair with a pale belly. Their snout is flat, short and broad with upwards facing nostrils which allow them to breath at the surface without sticking their whole head out. They have short clawed flippers used for swimming.

At birth the average mediterranean monk seal is 80cm and can grow up to 2.4m. Males can weigh 320kgs and females at 300kgs.

These Male and female seal pups look different. Young females have a rectangular white stripe on their bellies while males have a butterfly shaped white patch on their belly. As they grow they continue to molt, changing colour and contrast.

☀️Why do we need permanent eco-moorings?

⚓️1. Significant reduction of damage to aquatic habitats by avoiding dropping anchor on the seafloor.

⛵️2. 78% of maritime users have been shown to prefer mooring over anchoring according to a study conducted by Parry-Wilson et al. in 2019.

⚠️13. These moorings also increase safety for boaters, as they tend to be easier to use and maintain when compared to traditional anchoring systems, providing a more secure and stable mooring option.

🌱Even in areas where Posidonia oceanica meadows appear damaged, establishing non-anchoring zones seems to positively impact local biodiversity.

The higher fish diversity observed in Foki's non-anchoring zone, despite the overall decline in Posidonia health, suggests that protecting these areas from anchoring can help preserve and even enhance marine life. 🐡🐟🐠

The Kosamare team was doing seagrass surveys today!

Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass found in the Mediterranean, is vital for protecting coastlines. It slows down waves, reducing their impact and preventing erosion. The plant's roots and rhizomes grow deep into the seabed, securing sediment and creating layers that last for thousands of years. These underwater meadows have been shielding shores for ages and are becoming even more crucial as climate change intensifies.

Our mission is to study, raise awareness, and protect the local marine ecosystem and its endangered species. We work with the National Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) to collect underwater data in order to improve our understanding and encourage protection of the area.
