Esso nasce dal profondo amore per l’Isola di Kerkyra (Corfù), un luogo ove si intrecciano antiche e ricchissime tradizioni storiche, su di un territorio di folgorante bellezza. La sua geografia molto varia, é rappresentata da aree dissimili e contrastanti: al nord impervie zone montuose che toccano i 916 mt di altezza, si alternano a fertili valli pianeg
gianti, mentre a sud dolci rilievi collinari, digradano su grandi arenili di sabbia fine. Kerkyra, la principale città fortificata dai dominatori della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, conserva ancora un esteso quartiere antico (patrimonio UNESCO) di particolare pregio storico, architettonicamente molto affine alla famosa città lagunare. Popolato da oltre 100.000 individui, il territorio dell’isola è selvaggio per almeno l’80% della sua superficie complessiva e comprende alcune zone ancora inaccessibili. Questa vitale terra, protetta da un manto di oltre 4.000.000 (!!!!) di ulivi censiti ed abitata da ricchissima fauna e flora autoctona, ha generato la dolce Nausicaa, figlia di Alcinoo Re dei Feaci, l’ultimo incontro di Ulisse prima del suo ritorno ad Itaca. The Kerkyra Offroad Meeting si svolge ogni anno, su di un calendario di 4 giorni collocato tra la fine di Aprile e l’inizio di Maggio. Organizzato su 4 dettagliatissimi road-books giornalieri, permette di visitare l’intero territorio dell’Isola; i road-books sono composti da strade agricole, sentieri e collegamenti molto dissestati, alcuni appositamente riaperti dai nostri scouts. Le sue caratteristiche principali sono il buon livello di guida in fuoristrada, su fondi di fango, sabbia, sasso e sottobosco, la sistemazione in un lussuoso albergo a 5 stelle con spiaggia privata, spa e 2 piscine ( http://www.kontokalibay.com/ ), il buon cibo genuino e tradizionale ed il magnifico clima Mediterraneo, che nel periodo specifico consente già la balneazione. The Kerkyra Offroad Meeting is a touristic offroad event organized by the non-profit-making Italian Sport Association, “The Lions of Saint Mark”. It was born out of love for the Island of Kerkyra (Corfu), a place where many ancient and rich historical traditions intertwine in a landscape of spectacular beauty. The geography of the island is very varied, consisting of diverse and contrasting regions: in the north impassable mountain ranges reaching up to 916 meters, alternate with rich fertile valleys, while in the south gently rolling hills slope down to long stretches of fine sand. Kerkyra, the main fortified city of the ruling Serene Republic of Venice, still preserves an extensive old quarter (declared world heritage by UNESCO) of outstanding historical interest, architecturally very similar to the famous mother city in the Lagoon. With a population of 100,000 inhabitants, the landscape of the island remains wild and unspoiled over almost 80% of its total area and contains regions that are still inaccessible. This vibrant land, adorned with a protective covering of more than 4,000,000 (!!!!) registered olive trees and home to a rich variety of indigenous fauna and flora, appears in Homer’s Odyssey as the home of gentle Nausicaa, daughter of Alcinous King of the Phaeceans, the last place visited by Ulysses before his return to Ithaca. The Kerkyra Offroad Meeting takes place every year over 4 days at the end of April and the beginning of May. Organised around 4 very detailed daily road-books, the event enables participants to discover the interior of the island; the road-books are made up of country roads, paths and very rough road connections, some reopened by our scouts. The main characteristics of the event are the quite high standard of off road driving on roads made up of mud, sand, stone and woodland, and accommodation in a luxurious 5 star hotel with a private beach, spa, 2 swimming pools (http://www.kontokalibay.com/), excellent authentic local cuisine and the wonderful Mediterranean climate, which in this period is already warm enough for swimming.
