On 2 September, Gaetano Nastasi, Vice President of INSULEUR, represented our Network at the Eurochambres Affiliated and Correspondent Members Meeting, held in Istanbul at the TOBB headquarters, at the invitation of EUROCHAMBRES President Vladimir Dlouhy and Vice President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu.

🌍 The meeting brought together Chambers of Commerce from countries involved in the EU enlargement process and the Eastern Neighbourhood, alongside representatives of INSULEUR and the AIC – Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of Commerce.

🏝️ During the roundtable discussion, Gaetano Nastasi highlighted the key points of INSULEUR’s Position Paper on the EU Strategy for Islands, already submitted to the European Commission, with the aim of promoting closer cooperation with EUROCHAMBRES and strengthening the capacity of the network of European Chambers of Commerce to act collectively in the face of shared challenges and opportunities.

💬 INSULEUR’s participation was an important opportunity to bring the voice of European islands and their business communities into the wider discussion and to reinforce cooperation with Chambers across Europe and its neighbouring countries.

Europe's islands must have a stronger voice in shaping the future of EU Cohesion Policy.

INSULEUR has submitted its Position Paper to the European Commission's public consultation on the 10th Report on Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion, presenting concrete recommendations to ensure that the permanent challenges faced by island territories and island SMEs are fully recognised in future EU policies.

This is part of INSULEUR's continuous commitment to contributing to European policymaking. As with previous consultations -including the EU Strategy for Islands and the Right to Stay Strategy- we continue to advocate for a stronger island dimension across EU legislation and funding programmes.

Building on the successful CAROUSEL pilot implementation in Halki and the knowledge shared during the High-Level Conference "Development of Local Circular Economy Communities in Small Island Municipalities of Greece", held on 11 June 2026, a set of Recommendations for Strengthening Circular Economies on Islands has been developed.

The recommendations focus on four key priorities:
♻️ Integrating circular economy principles into national and European island development strategies
🌍 Promoting circular economy within the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR)
🏝️ Linking circular economy with sustainable tourism
🎓 Advancing circular economy through education

These recommendations aim to strengthen the environmental, economic and social resilience of island communities by supporting long-term policies that foster collaboration, innovation and sustainable resource management.

The dialogue continues! We're pleased to share this update from Noel Formosa on the next steps towards a stronger European policy for islands. 🌊🇪🇺

Europe's islands must help shape Europe's island policy. 🌊🇪🇺

As rapporteur of the European Committee of the Regions on the EU Strategy for Islands, Noel Formosa, Vice-President of and Mayor of San Lawrenz, has launched a broad consultation process to ensure that the CoR's opinion reflects the realities and ambitions of island communities across Europe.

Speaking at an Insuleur online workshop, he stressed that the Committee's recommendations will be developed with islands, not simply about islands, bringing together local and regional authorities, businesses, civil society, academics and citizens.

Among the key priorities highlighted by Formosa are:
🔹 Recognising the cost of insularity in EU policymaking.
🔹 Embedding Island Proofing across European legislation.
🔹 Ensuring local and regional authorities play a full role in designing and implementing the future National and Regional Partnership Plans.
🔹 Delivering an EU Strategy that translates into real opportunities for island communities.

💬 "My responsibility is to build our Opinion. An Opinion that reflects the voices of Europe's islands. An Opinion that is evidence-based. An Opinion that is ambitious. But above all, a people-based Opinion. An Opinion built with islands rather than simply about islands."
