One of the Foundation’s core pillars is the support and promotion of lifelong education. For this reason, every year we support innovative non-formal educational initiatives for the young community of Agios Nikolaos.

On May 27th and 28th, we had the pleasure of collaborating with the educational team "Vivliodiaplaseis" by sisters Anna Maria and Marianna Vlassi, who design educational programs inspired by books, continuing the Foundation's initiative that recently included a donation of books to three primary schools in the city.
This successful program, which travels to schools across Greece, came to Crete for the very first time, guided by the book “Matisse’s Garden”, published in Greek by Melissa Editions in collaboration with MoMA.

We would like to warmly thank educator Voula Pagalou from the 2nd Primary School for her coordination and enthusiastic collaboration.

The program offered experiential training to approximately 15 teachers of the school, as well as a vivid educational journey introducing 4th grade students to Matisse’s cut-outs.

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, we are pleased to continue our long-standing collaboration with the volunteer group Colour Your Day for Autism, supporting their annual initiative in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, a community-driven event dedicated to raising awareness and fostering understanding of neurodiversity.
Held on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, this year’s gathering marked five years of presence and action in Agios Nikolaos and once again created a calm and welcoming space for dialogue, connection, and recognition of neurodiversity.
This year, we were pleased to support a new addition to the programme: a Silent Disco experience. Designed to be inclusive and sensory-aware, it offered participants the freedom to engage with music and movement in their own rhythm, intensity, and comfort, a simple but powerful reminder that joy and expression can take many forms and rhythms.
We are grateful to contribute to a community that continues to lead with openness, empathy, and inclusion.

📣 ART PRIZE 2026

We are delighted to announce the winners of the Art Prize 2026: Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett from Canada, for their proposal Chronotopia.

Chronotopia is a large-scale, site-specific installation drawing from relationships between Crete and water, light, space, and time. The piece is composed of layers of optical lenses, wrapped in two arcing sails of light. Chronotopia acts as a reflection on visual culture, combining different ways of seeing into a shared space. This coexistence creates multiple perspectives, moving beyond a single reality toward a layered, collective experience.

Based in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, in Western Canada, Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett have collaborated since 2010 on large-scale light art installations, public and environmental projects, and participatory works. Their works are exhibited extensively at museums, festivals, and galleries, nationally and internationally. Their artistic practice focuses on the relationship between body, space, and time, with the landscape always functioning as an active interlocutor, co-shaping the conception, scale, and experience of each work.

We are delighted to have supported three primary schools in Agios Nikolaos that responded with great enthusiasm to the “Diavazo” campaign, enriching their school libraries with new books and opening the door to many new storytelling adventures.

The photos featured are from the 2nd Primary School of Agios Nikolaos, where Ms. Paraskevi Pagkalos, responsible for the school library, has helped create a vibrant and welcoming space where books truly come to life.

Our warmest thanks to Mr. Douvitsas and Nefeli Publications for this meaningful initiative, which helps strengthen access to books where they are needed most.
Through collaborations like this, we aim to empower young minds and bring our local community closer to culture, creativity, and learning.

We’re excited to share moments from the 4th G&A Mamidakis Foundation Research Residency, which concluded recently in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
This year, we shifted from three years centered on care to a new thematic focus on Art, Science, and Technology (AST).
Guided by the inspiring , , and our nine fellows Liva Dudareva, Dimitris Theocharis, Lida Zacharopoulou, Lefteris Kontopodis, Chloe Pare Anastasiadou, Zoe Diakaki, Lina Mantikou, and Gina Stavropoulou took part in discussions, workshops, activities, and on-site research exploring the intersections of Art, Science, and Technology (AST).
Anne Dippel introduced the concept of “pharmacodesign,” bringing together Art, Science, and Technology to imagine therapeutic media.
Jussi Parikka presented the archaeology of media and led explorations into agricultural sustainability and “agricultural futurisms,” with a focus on Crete and the Mediterranean.
With Androniki Papapetrou and Giannis Andronikidis, the fellows investigated AST collaborations and the futures they might generate.
Finally, Ioannis Mitrou facilitated work in experimental non-linear performance and liminal future scenarios, culminating in the co-creation of an AST collective piece responding to a future residency.
A huge thank you to this year’s amazing group of fellows and to our workshops leaders for their creative sparks.

Back in October, just a few weeks before closing our doors for 2025, we were delighted to organise at Minos Beach Art Hotel another inspiring workshop in collaboration with Branding Heritage, welcoming the students of Neapolis High School.

The workshop was part of the presentation of the “Contemporary Minoans” collection in its physical form, along with the groundbreaking digital initiative “Digital Minoans,” initiated by Branding Heritage. The students engaged in conversations with visual artist Giannis Fragkiadakis, Stefanos Drakos, founder of Computational Design COMDES and creator of Digital Minoans, and Katerina Frentzos, founder of Branding Heritage.

They explored how art connects with technology and culture, realizing that Minoan heritage is not just a treasure of the past, but a vibrant source of inspiration for today’s artistic expression.

As always, our main goal was to bring the younger generation closer to their cultural roots through art and technology, cultivating creativity and a deeper appreciation of heritage.

A big thank you to , , and for the wonderful collaboration.
