Thank you EmpowerVan for being part of an incredible summer for the young ladies!

Kids all over the world are excited for their summer holidays, as this means time spent with their familiy, summer camps, road trips, camping tours. For many other children, summer holidays are not as rosy and exciting, as they don’t have the opportunities or financial means for special activity.

This summer, Action for Women organized a summer camp for exactly those girls. Making learning, growing, sharing and connecting more accessible in Athens.

We were honored to be a part of the summer camp and be able to empower the next generation of girls through self-defense. Because we are here to support every girl in growing strong and confident!

When children are safe enough to grow, mothers can begin again too. ❤️ At , childcare is woven into everything we do.

For many of the women we support, there is no grandparent around the corner, no partner to take over for an hour, and often no reliable or affordable childcare option to fall back on.

Because while a mother is learning Greek, meeting her social worker, speaking to her psychologist, or simply trying to work out what comes next, her child needs somewhere safe to be. And not just somewhere to be. Somewhere they are known, somewhere they can play, learn, build trust and feel secure enough for their mother to walk into the next room without worrying.

That is what childcare makes possible for both of them. We can tell you why it matters.

Thank you to all who came to our Volunteer Apéro in Zürich last week! Five signed up to volunteer. One became a direct donor. Of course those numbers make us happy. But what makes us happy was what they represented:

Women showing up for women.
Women giving their time, skills and energy.
Women choosing to be part of something bigger than themselves.

The feedback? Authentic. Personal. That’s all we ever try to be 😊

WE’RE HIRING: GREEK TEACHER 🇬🇷

Greek language learning is one of the core pillars of the Pomegranate Project. Because language is not just grammar.

It is being able to speak to a doctor. Understand a school notice.
Apply for work. Navigate public services. Advocate for yourself. Feel more at home in the place where you live.

We’re looking for a strong, creative teacher who is also trauma-informed, grounded and structured, someone who can build trust while meeting women with very different experiences and starting points.

📍 Athens
🕒 30 hours/week
📄 One-year fixed-term paid contract
🌙 Two evening sessions/week
🗓 Start: 7 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter

We’re also open to qualified teachers available for evening teaching only.

Meet Francesca, founder of Bright Lines Design and one of the creative forces who has helped shape Action for Women. 😊

For the past few years, she has generously shared her professional skills with us, bringing our work and our stories to life through design. And her story is an important one.

Because volunteering with AFW doesn’t automatically mean getting on a plane to Greece. Sometimes, it simply starts with asking:

What do I already know how to do?

For Fra, as we affectionately call her, it’s graphic design.

For you, it might be communications, events, fundraising, photography, organising, connecting people, or a skill we haven’t even thought of yet!

You don’t have to be a woman to contribute to AFW either. While our frontline team in Greece is made up entirely of women, our wider community is built by people bringing all kinds of skills, experience, ideas and perspectives!

At a time when the world can feel relentlessly heavy, there are still so many ways to contribute. To show up.

That’s why we’re having a Volunteer Apéro: Not to hand you a job description the moment you walk through the door, but grow our community and discover what we might be able to do together.

Because we are stronger together.

What does an internship at Action for Women actually involve?

Meet Angela who has been part of our AFW family at in Athens, and according to her, quite a lot! 😂

Angela has played an integral part in supporting our programme activities, research, reporting, communications and the many behind-the-scenes tasks that keep a grassroots women’s organisation running.

We are now looking for our next intern to join us in from September 2026. You will be a good fit if you are curious, proactive, organised, interested in gender justice and forced migration, and not frightened by spreadsheets, toddlers or the occasional printer-related crisis.

We are an all-women team, and love working with people from diverse backgrounds and warmly welcome applications from cis and trans women, intersex women, and non-binary people who feel comfortable in a space centred on the experiences of women. 🌈🔥

Greek lessons at ended for the summer exactly as they should: Music, food, dancing, party hats and a frankly unnecessary amount of confetti. 🎉 The medals were very serious. The dancing, even more so. The handmade “Class of 2026” sign featured a hippo in a graduation hat, which captured the dignity of the occasion perfectly. 😊

But this celebration was about more than finishing another year of classes. Learning Greek means being able to speak for yourself at a doctor’s appointment, understand a school message, ask questions at work, navigate the city and feel a little less dependent on someone else to translate your life. Every new word is another small piece of confidence, choice and independence.

So we celebrated the women who kept showing up, kept trying and kept laughing through the difficult bits, while balancing work, children, appointments and everything else life placed in their way.

We are enormously proud of you all and see you back in Sep! ❤️❤️❤️

Each week, around 60 women come through our doors to learn, seek support, spend time together and build their next steps. To help make sure these classes, and the safe space where they happen are still here next year, visit afw.ngo/shop and sponsor part of our work. Rent is one of the hardest things to raise funds for. It is also what keeps the doors open.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. And there is more than one way to teach a language.

You can teach Greek with a whiteboard and a worksheet. With flashcards, repetition, homework and gold stars. Or take it outside. Into the backyard, into the sunshine, where the formality drops away and conversation flows the way it was always meant to, naturally.

Or you can go further still. You can teach Greek with a video of the female reproductive system, with the vocabulary to describe what happens to them every single month. With a room where no question is embarrassing and no word is off-limits.

Our participants don't need textbook Greek. They need: "This is what my body is doing and I need you to understand me" Greek.

Because language learned in context is language that stays. And language that puts power back in a woman's hands, to name her own body, to advocate for herself, to be heard — that is not just a lesson.
