Action for Women

Action for Women Working towards a brighter tomorrow for and with women displaced by violence, conflict, and persecution.

Action for Women is an Athens-based women’s rights organisation supporting refugee and asylum-seeking women’s recovery, resilience and re-integration. With an all-female team, we offer a holistic protection and empowerment model for those at risk and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in a women-only safe space – the first of its kind in Greece.

For us at Action For Women, safety for girls and women isn't only an all-women space, or a roof over your head. 🧡

Sometimes, safety looks like knowing your rights online, recognising digital violence, deepfakes, and the new ways harm finds young women online.

Other times, it looks like sitting down together before your Greek school exams, and knowing someone believes in your future.

There's no line in any of the team's job descriptions that says do this. But they do it anyway.

Ten years of this. Not because it's required. Because we believe everyone deserves someone in their corner. 🌸

We count ourselves very lucky: This is our very own in-house baby whisperer. We cannot do without her and our volunteers because childcare is an integral pillar of everything we do at

If a single mother cannot bring her child, she cannot come. It's that simple. No childcare means no Greek class. No childcare means no appointment with the social worker or psychologist in peace - no breathing room.

The moment you remove childcare from the equation, you remove access to everything else.

We are one of the very few organisations in Greece providing dedicated childcare as an accompanying service, not as a standalone programme, but woven into every activity we offer, so that no mother ever has to choose between her child and her future.

So we hold their children, carefully, joyfully, and on some days, in considerable numbers.

Some class days, we get a lovely mixed age group: A curious three-year-old teaching the younger ones the rules of life. A toddler with VERY strong opinions about snack time. And then there are time slots like this. 👀

Three babies. Same age. Same needs. Same volume.

Kallianna handles it all with patience, care, and what we suspect is some kind of superpower she hasn't told us about yet.

This is what childcare looks like when it's done with intention in a safe, consistent space, for the babies, and for their mothers.

We have formally submitted a request for Kallianna to grow an extra pair of hands. We are awaiting a response. Until then, help us keep this space, and these tiny humans, held.

Summer is here at and Christina has moved Greek lessons out to our backyard.

Honestly? This is how language was always meant to be learned. Sitting in the sun, talking, laughing, making mistakes without worrying. Less grammar, more conversation. Our participants are practising their Greek the way it feels natural - with each other.

If you'd like to support what we do, head to afw.ngo/shop

Every purchase goes directly to our work in Athens.

And if you want to give something that really matters? Help us cover the rent. It sounds simple, but a safe home for women who've lost everything, that's one of our hardest things to fundraise for. No glamour, no headlines. Just a door that stays open.

Greece is calling it “reform.” The government describes this as a shift away from passive dependency toward work, integration, and self-sufficiency.

But here is what that looks like in practice:

- Housing support removed.
- Cash assistance cut.
- A national Integration program that reach almost no one.

And at the same time, refugees are being sent back to Greece from across Europe to a EU State whose system that cannot receive them.

This is not reform. It is the formalisation of abandonment.

At Action for Women, we see what happens next. Every day.

Women pushed out of camps with nowhere to go.

Survivors expected to rebuild their lives without housing, without documents, without support.

When the system fails, the risks grow: exploitation, abuse, invisibility.

Since 2016, we have supported nearly 22,000 women. What we are witnessing now is not transition. It is a collapse.

We thank Refugee Support Aegean - Υποστήριξη Προσφύγων στο Αιγαίο - whose meticulous documentation of the situation in Greece made much of this piece possible.

We retired a sofa that had been with us since Chios. Ten years: a lot of bums, and frankly, it was broken and patched over constantly. The other one, five years old and faded, wasn't much better.

The women who come to us at deserve better than that.

Thanks to , they now have it. Three sofas, two armchairs, and a table for our Day Centre and shelter.

Desmos has been doing something quietly powerful since 2012: matching surplus goods from companies and individuals to the real needs of organisations across Greece. No waste. Just the right things reaching the right people.

This time, that meant us. And for women who walk through our door after weeks of uncertainty and hardship, we want to send the message:You are worth comfort. You belong here. You deserve dignity. 💛

We asked some of the AFW team for their favourite Greek words. 🇬🇷

Διακοπές (holiday): because everyone deserves rest.

Σιγά σιγά (slowly, slowly): because real change is intentional, not rushed.

Χαλαρά (halara / take it easy): because pressure helps no one.

Χαμόγελο (smile): because it still happens, even here.

Their answers reflect who we are. Σιγά σιγά. Χαλαρά. Not passive. Not chaotic. Intentional in how we work, how we show up, and how we walk alongside the women of

Trauma takes time. We don't rush it. Nobody should.

32 new women signed up for Greek lessons since January 2026. 65 show up every week.
Not because they have to. Because they want to.

Σιγά σιγά, we know they'll get there. But we need people in our corner.
