Overview
Project partners met in Zadar to review progress and align next steps in addressing marine pollution across the Adriatic-Ionian region, with a focus on Work Package 2.

As part of the Interreg IPA ADRION – PREVENT Project, the AIMLIN Network was presented in Skopje by UKLO, highlighting a strong regional commitment to innovative and cooperative water protection in the Adriatic-Ionian region.

AIMLIN is a regional initiative dedicated to sustainable water management, built on the principles of scientific rigor, transparency, and inclusivity. It connects scientific institutions, monitoring services, and inspection authorities, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach to protecting aquatic ecosystems.

The network focuses on developing and applying modern methodologies for pollution monitoring, while enabling early warning systems and data-driven decision-making across the region. It also provides access to shared scientific resources, protocols, and comparative data, strengthening both research and operational capacities.

Strengthening Environmental Security in the Adriatic-Ionian Region

Faculty of Security UKLO– Skopje

The Faculty of Security – Skopje hosted a high-level event under the PREVENT Project (Interreg IPA ADRION Programme), bringing together academia, national institutions, and international partners to strengthen environmental security and regional cooperation in the Adriatic-Ionian area.

The discussions focused on addressing environmental degradation, pollution risks, and improving institutional coordination, with strong emphasis on regional cooperation frameworks such as EUSAIR and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.

Key project results were presented, including:
🔹 criminological perspectives on environmental impacts
🔹 risk assessment and pollution monitoring tools
🔹 an interactive environmental data platform

National institutions, including the State Environmental Inspectorate, Hydrometeorological Service, and Hydrobiological Institute – Ohrid, highlighted the need for stronger inspection capacities, improved environmental monitoring, and biodiversity protection.
The programme opened with welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr. Jonce Ivanovski, Dean of the Faculty of Security – Skopje. A key focus was the strategic alignment of IPA ADRION projects with EUSAIR and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, highlighting the role of regional cooperation in advancing EU environmental and security standards.
The event was held under the guidance of Professor Dr. Aleksandar Ivanov (UKLO),ensuring the successful implementation and strategic direction of the project activities.

Productive Meeting on Marine Pollution Prevention at the Municipality of Velo-Vocha 🌍
The team from NCSR Demokritos had the opportunity to present the Marine Pollution Application — developed within the EU-funded Interreg ipa Adrion PREVENT program — to the municipal council of the Municipality of Velo-Vocha in Greece .

Mr. Balaskas and Mr. Papadopoulos demonstrated the application to the City Council, who actively used the tool, provided valuable feedback, and suggested improvements to enhance its effectiveness. Their constructive engagement reflects a strong commitment to environmental protection and technological innovation.

We sincerely thank the municipal officials for their time, insightful questions, and willingness to collaborate toward safeguarding our coastal and marine environments.

Slovenia Hosts European Projects Event on Plastic Pollution | 14 October 2025

The team of all the project partners has participated in the Slovenia and European Projects on Plastic Pollution event, held on 14 October 2025 and hosted by the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC) in Ljubljana 🇸🇮.

The event brought together leading researchers, institutions, and EU-funded initiatives working to reduce plastic pollution, improve monitoring technologies, and promote sustainability across European aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

🔹 Keynote and project presentations covered:
• Innovations in detection and monitoring of microplastics and nanoplastics
• Pollution reduction strategies and cross-border cooperation
• Sustainable solutions for agriculture, aquaculture, and industry
• Behavioural and policy approaches to environmental protection

Among the featured initiatives, Interreg IPA ADRION PREVENT presented its work on pollution reduction and early warning for vulnerable ecosystems in the Adriatic-Ionian region, led by Politecnico di Bari (POLIBA) and supported by all project partners. 🌊

Steering Committee Meeting – in Slovenia 13th of October PREVENT Project

The PREVENT consortium met in Slovenia 🇸🇮 for the Steering Committee Meeting, hosted by NIC.

This important gathering brought together project partners to:
✅ Review progress achieved during Period 2 (P2),
✅ Discuss administrative and financial updates,
✅ Plan upcoming Period 3 (P3) priorities and activities, and
✅ Strengthen coordination and communication among partners.

Experience Exchange Event – Interreg IPA Adrion Prevent in Rhodes

On June 19, 2025, the Development Agency of the South Aegean Region – ENERGEIAKI S.A.organized an experience exchange event at the Regional Council Hall in Rhodes.

The event, held within the Interreg IPA Adrion Prevent programme, focused on actions and innovations to tackle marine pollution.

Opening remarks were given by Ms. Mara Antoniadi, President of ENERGEIAKI S.A., followed by the participation of CEO Mr. Ioannis Minatsis and the agency’s team. Professor Dora Foti from the University of Bari, the project leader, presented the programme’s objectives.

Speakers included experts from NCSR Demokritos, HCMR, and MEPP, presenting innovative research and initiatives on marine pollution and environmental protection.

The event gathered representatives from regional authorities, research institutions, and environmental organizations, strengthening collaboration toward a cleaner and more resilient Mediterranean.

Project PREVENT Meeting at ATRAC’s “Open Door Day”throwback .

On March 6, at the Rijeka City Museum in Rijeka, Croatia, the Adriatic Training and Research Centre (ATRAC) hosted its “Open Door Day” event, featuring a Project PREVENT meeting as a side session.

The meeting gathered representatives from REMPEC (IMO, Malta), CEDRE (France), MEKE Marine (Turkey), VIKOMA (UK), as well as Croatian and Slovenian ministries, coast guards, port authorities, oil industry representatives, and research institutions.

Discussions focused on marine pollution response and the growing threat of microplastic pollution. ATRAC experts presented the PREVENT project and current challenges in plastic management, followed by expert insights on prevention, response strategies, and international cooperation.

Participants emphasized the need for stronger regional collaboration, better data sharing, and enhanced preparedness across the Mediterranean.

The event highlighted a shared commitment to reducing marine litter and protecting the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas.The PREVENT meeting aimed to exchange insights and practical experiences from stakeholders actively engaged in combating marine and microplastic pollution. ATRAC experts opened the session with presentations introducing the PREVENT project and addressing the growing global challenge of plastic and microplastic pollution.

Following the presentations, a dynamic discussion unfolded among representatives from:
• REMPEC (IMO, Malta) – supporting pollution prevention and response coordination in the Mediterranean,
• CEDRE (France) – providing international expertise on accidental water pollution and microplastics monitoring,
• National and regional authorities from Croatia and Slovenia,
• Oil and maritime industries including JANAF, INA, and S.I.O.T.,
• Civil protection and coast guard agencies.

Participants shared valuable perspectives on how to enhance regional cooperation, improve response readiness, and strengthen data-sharing frameworks for marine litter and microplastics management.
