Τη Δευτέρα 25 Μαΐου, το Cooling Havens εγκαινιάζει μια σειρά δωρεάν βιωματικών περιηγήσεων και σε προσκαλεί σε έναν ξεχωριστό και συναρπαστικό περίπατο στις γειτονιές του Μεταξουργείου και του Κολωνού.

🗺️💧 Μέσα από τη διαδρομή, ανακαλύπτουμε ιστορίες, μνήμες και κρυμμένα ίχνη του νερού που διαμόρφωσαν την περιοχή διαχρονικά - συνδέοντας το παρελθόν της πόλης με τις σύγχρονες προκλήσεις της κλιματικής ανθεκτικότητας.

📌 Η δράση εντάσσεται στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων του This is Athens - City Festival και υλοποιείται με τη συνδιοργάνωση του Dipylon Society και του Impact Hub Athens.

On Monday, May 25, Cooling Havens launches a series of free experiential walks and invites you to a unique and engaging walk through the neighbourhoods of Metaxourgeio and Kolonos.

🗺️💧 Along the route, we will discover stories, memories and hidden traces of water that have shaped the area over time - connecting the city’s past with today’s challenges of climate resilience.

📌 The activity is part of the This is Athens City Festival 2026 and is co-organised with DIPYLON and Impact Hub Athens.

Πώς αισθάνεται κανείς όταν βρίσκεται μπροστά σε μια απο-κάλυψη, στη στιγμή δηλαδή που «αφαιρείται το κάλυμμα» και έρχεται στο φως κάτι κρυμμένο, άγνωστο ή μυστικό;
Πρόκειται για μια συγκινητική εμπειρία, κατά την οποία παρελθούσες ανθρώπινες ζωές συναντούν τις τότε παρούσες: εκείνες των αρχαιολόγων και των εργατών που έφεραν ξανά στο φως μια σαρκοφάγο των αρχών του 3ου αι. μ.Χ. Η σαρκοφάγος αποτέλεσε την τελευταία κατοικία τεσσάρων ανθρώπων που έζησαν κατά τη Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο και ενταφιάστηκαν σε ένα από τα νεκροταφεία της Ιεράς Οδού, ακριβώς έξω από τα τείχη της πόλης, δίπλα στον Ηριδανό ποταμό.
Κοιτάζοντας σήμερα αυτή τη στιγμή μέσα από τον φακό, γινόμαστε κι εμείς ένας κρίκος σε αυτή την αέναη αλυσίδα της μνήμης.

How does one feel when faced with an un-covering, that is, the moment when "the cover is lifted" and something hidden, unknown, or secret comes to light?

It is a moving experience, during which past human lives meet the then-present ones: those of the archaeologists and workers who brought back to light a sarcophagus from the early 3rd century AD. The sarcophagus served as the final resting place for four people who lived during the Roman period and were buried in one of the cemeteries of the Sacred Way, right outside the city walls, next to the Eridanos River.

Looking at this moment today through the camera lens, we too become a link in this perpetual chain of memory.

«Περίεργα φαινόμενα…»
Έτσι χαρακτήρισε ο αρχαιολόγος τα ευρήματα μιας σειράς τάφων κατά μήκος της Ιεράς Οδού. Ένα κρανίο με ίχνος τραύματος από βέλος –άραγε ο νεκρός ήταν πολεμιστής; Ιατρικά εργαλεία και μια μαρμάρινη κεφαλή που θυμίζει τον Ιπποκράτη –μήπως εδώ τάφηκε ένας γιατρός; Μια τραγική προσωπίδα –θα μπορούσε να ήταν η τελευταία σιωπηλή μάσκα ενός ηθοποιού; Κοιτάζοντας τη φωτογραφία από την ανασκαφή, μοιάζει σχεδόν να ακούμε εκείνη τη φράση του αρχαιολόγου να αντηχεί μέσα στο σκάμμα: «Περίεργα φαινόμενα…».

“Curious phenomena…”
This is how the archaeologist characterised the finds from a series of tombs along the Sacred Way. A skull with traces of an arrow wound –was the deceased perhaps a warrior? Medical tools and a marble head reminiscent of Hippocrates –could a doctor have been buried here? A tragic mask –might it have been the final silent mask of an actor? Looking at the photograph from the excavation, we can almost hear that phrase from the archaeologist echoing within the trench: “Curious phenomena…”.

Το Δίπυλον, στο πλαίσιο του Ευρωπαϊκού Προγράμματος «Cooling Havens: Σημεία δροσιάς και ενεργοποίησης των πολιτών στις γειτονιές», συμμετείχε στο εκπαιδευτικό εργαστήρι για τους μαθητές και τις μαθήτριες του 18ου Γυμνασίου Αθηνών στα Άνω Πατήσια, την Πέμπτη 23 Απριλίου. Στόχος της δράσης ήταν η εμπλοκή μαθητών και μαθητριών στο πρώτο στάδιο του έργου, μέσα από την κατανόηση της ιστορίας και της σημασίας του νερού για τη γειτονιά τους.

Dipylon, within the framework of the European Program "Cooling Havens: Water-Powered Neighborhood Cooling and Engagement Stations," participated in the educational workshop for the students of the 18th High School of Athens in Ano Patisia, on Thursday, April 23. The goal of the action was the involvement of the students in the first stage of the project, through an understanding of the history and the significance of water for their neighborhood.

Στις Αχαρνές (Μενίδι), σε μικρή απόσταση από τον πολυσύχναστο κόμβο της Μεταμόρφωσης (Κουκουβάουνες τον 19ο αιώνα), διατηρείται σε εξαιρετικά καλή κατάσταση ένας μνημειώδης θολωτός τάφος της Μυκηναϊκής Εποχής (14ος-13ος αι. π.Χ.). Ο θολωτός τάφος του Μενιδίου, όπως επικράτησε να λέγεται στη βιβλιογραφία, ανασκάφηκε το 1879 πάνω σε ένα χαμηλό ύψωμα μόλις 500 μ. από τον Κηφισό ποταμό από το Γερμανικό Αρχαιολογικό Ινστιτούτο, ενώ η θέση του καταγράφηκε από τον J. A. Kaupert στο εμβληματικό έργο του «Οι Χάρτες της Αττικής». Μέσα στον πυκνό οικοδομικό ιστό της σύγχρονης πόλης, η αρχαία ταφική μνήμη παραμένει απρόσμενα παρούσα, αναδεικνύοντας μια γοητευτική αντίθεση ανάμεσα στις σύγχρονες υποδομές και το πανάρχαιο παρελθόν του τόπου.

In Acharnes (Menidi), a short distance from the busy interchange at Metamorphosi (known as Koukouvaounes in the 19th century), a monumental tholos tomb of the Mycenaean Era (14th-13th century BC) is preserved in an exceptionally good condition. The Menidi tholos tomb, as it is known in the scholarly literature, was excavated in 1879 by the German Archaeological Institute on a low hill, just 500 m from the Kefissos River. Its location is recorded by J. A. Kaupert in his landmark work "Maps of Attica". Today, within the dense urban fabric of the modern city, this ancient funerary memory remains unexpectedly present, creating a charming contrast between modern infrastructure and the site's deep historical past.

«Δεξίωσις» στην αρχαία τέχνη είναι η συμβολική χειραψία, η ένωση των δεξιών χεριών ανάμεσα στον νεκρό και τους οικείους του. Δεν πρόκειται για έναν τυπικό χαιρετισμό, αλλά για τη στιγμή ενός αιώνιου αποχαιρετισμού που χτίζει μια γέφυρα πάνω από το χάσμα της απώλειας. Στη φωτογραφία βλέπουμε την αποκάλυψη μιας μαρμάρινης βάσης του 4ου αι. π.Χ., η οποία απεικονίζει μια τέτοια σκηνή. Το 1955, ο αρχαιολόγος Ιωάννης Μηλιάδης εντόπισε αυτή τη βάση –αρχικά τμήμα επιτύμβιου μνημείου– ενσωματωμένη στην αψίδα της κεντρικής αίθουσας της λεγόμενης «Οικίας του Πρόκλου» στη νότια κλιτύ της Ακρόπολης. Η βάση, διαμορφωμένη ως τράπεζα προσφορών, εξυπηρέτησε με αυτή τη λειτουργία τις ανάγκες του οικιακού ιερού της Κυβέλης.

"Dexiosis" in ancient Greek art signifies the symbolic joining of right hands between the deceased and their loved ones. It is not a gesture of greeting, but of parting. It captures the moment of an eternal farewell that builds a bridge over the chasm of loss. The photograph records the discovery of a 4th-century BC marble base depicting such a scene. In 1955, archaeologist Ioannis Miliadis identified this base –originally part of a funerary monument– reused in the apse of the central hall of the so-called "House of Proclus" on the South Slope of the Acropolis. Shaped as an offering table, it had been repurposed to serve the ritual needs of a domestic sanctuary dedicated to Cybele.
