Since November 2016, Khora Community Center in Athens has been operating a free shop at Asklipiou 113 space for refugees, asylum seekers, and other people in need. In this free shop, we moved away from dehumanizing distribution lines. Instead, we aim to give people a dignified shopping experience, allowing them to find clothes that both fit them and express their identity. In addition to clothing,
Khora’s free shop offers shoes, toiletries, and other non-food items. It also provides a vital space for families to get diapers and milk, which are particularly difficult to find for free in Athens. We’ve had thousands of people come through our little shop since opening, and those numbers are increasing weekly. With winter coming to Athens and no end to the European refugee crisis in sight, the demand is higher than ever. Currently, 100 to 120 people shop with us each day, in a space that is less than 80 square meters. In our current space, we are unable to keep up with this demand while maintaining our ethos of dignity and compassion. We believe that fashion is for everyone, and that everyone should have the freedom of self-expression. This is why we're asking for your help in allowing us to expand. Stay tuned for updates on how you can help, the progress we're making, and news from here in Athens. Help us support thousands of people to re-establish their place in the world!
