👩‍🚀 SPIN’s Rocketry Team is recruiting!

🥇 The Rocketry Team is responsible for the design, manufacture, testing and operation of high-power rockets aimed to launch satellites (CanSats) to 1km apogee. The team was founded in 2017 and in 2018 SPIN became the first team in Greece to design, fully manufacture and launch a high power rocket.

🫂 The new volunteers will be involved in the design and construction of the new rocket that will compete in the EuRoC (European Rocketry Challenge) in Portugal in 2024!

⚙️ In the image above, you can observe the CAD assembly model of our 5th-generation high-power rocket (HPR). Four rockets of this generation were constructed, tested, successfully launched, recovered, and reused a total of 6 times back in April 2022.

An HPR goes under extreme loading conditions during its flight. The Structure & Aerodynamics team is responsible for ensuring that the Rocket will be structurally sound and stable during its flight. In addition, it is in charge of manufacturing all the rocket parts.

📡 Telemetry System - Avionics team

The telemetry system includes both the flight computer’s and the ground station’s LoRa transceiver. 🖥️ The ground station uses a directional Yagi-Uda antenna as it is ideal for short-range communications (~3 km) and has a higher gain.

🛰️ On the other hand, the flight computer uses an omnidirectional antenna for its small shape, and it also provides a better connection with the ground station while the rocket is spinning. The antennas broadcast on frequencies between 430MHz - 440MHz, which are license-free sub-gigahertz radio frequency bands in Greece.

🚀 Static Test - Propulsion Team

The motor is the powerhouse of the rocket. In our team we produce the needed propellant from scratch, but first we study them theoretically and computationally👩‍🔬
Afterwards, we conduct various experiments to achieve the needs of our mission🥽 . We test our rocket’s motor via a static test which will provide us with useful feedback for our mission.

In the photo you can see our static test structure. The motor is inserted in the structure and fired up while a sensor is measuring the thrust provided. By doing these kinds of experiments we can verify the performance of our handmade propellant and make necessary adjustments👌

🪂 Parachute Testing - Recovery System

In the picture above we see our first test on a parasheet chute back in 2017. The test was performed in a wind tunnel which blows air in a specific velocity💨 By attaching the chute on a sensor we can measure the drag force of the parachute with respect to many variables like the velocity of the wind blowing, the temperature of the room and many others📈 .

The members of the recovery system collected the data and evaluated the construction of the parachute. This type of experiment is very useful when it comes to decision-making for the geometry of a parachute✂️ .

We like to evaluate our job, learn from our mistakes and get better. After all, we are just curious about space✨ .

❕❕❕Also, don’t forget, we are recruiting❕❕❕
