The HOME Project

The HOME Project The HOME Project is a non-profit organization addressing the needs of unaccompanied refugee children. Over half of the displaced population are children.

The HOME Project is a non-profit organization set up to address the needs of refugee children, who arrive in Greece alone. We move children from the streets, camps, police stations, detention centers and bring them to the safety of our HOMES where they receive a holistic network of child protection services with the ultimate aim of social inclusion. Our model is three-fold:
a) We create HOMES wher

e children receive a holistic network of child protection services via an individual development plan that includes mental health, educational, social, pedagogical and legal support. b) We create jobs for both the Greek and the refugee community. c) We add value to the local economy by renovating and renting vacant buildings in urban areas, lifting an economic burden from the owners while engaging local communities. In five years of operations we have created 14 shelters with a capacity of 270 children and more than 800 children have received child protection services. At the heart of this disaster is the little told story of the children, refugees who have been ripped from their homelands through violence and war, and who seek the basic security which most of us take for granted. Many of them are unaccompanied, alone, forced to fend for themselves and at risk of danger. This number continues to increase and with border closures they are now stranded in Greece. Thousands of children are without parents, family or any kind of guardian and urgently need support. These children are scattered around the refugee camps, police stations and detention centres. The living conditions are horrific and inhumane. Through no fault of their own, these children are the innocent victims of this crisis. They flee from violence only to find it again at a European border. They are the silent heart of this disaster. The HOME Project exists to bring these people to safe haven. It provides security, dignity and decent living conditions for the most vulnerable. It serves to recognize our common humanity and to do something for those who need it most. At the HOME Project, we Help, Overcome, Motivate, Empower. Together we hope to build a better future.

Through the Haridimos Family Collection, they explored the fascinating world of Karagiozis and discovered one of Greeceโ€™s most beloved forms of folk art, learning how shadow theater has brought humor, storytelling, and social commentary to audiences for generations.

They also had the chance to travel back in time, wandering through a life-sized Athenian neighborhood filled with authentic homes, shops, and everyday objects from the late 19th and early 20th century.

A heartfelt thank you to Megaron the Athens Concert Hall for opening its doors to our children and inspiring them to connect with music, culture, and new experiences.

Originally from Iran, the siblings arrived in Greece in November 2025 after a challenging journey through Iraq and Turkey. Once they were placed in our shelters, our team ensured that they received comprehensive care, psychosocial support, and a safe, stable environment where they could rebuild a sense of everyday life.

At the same time, our Legal Team worked closely with their mother, providing guidance every step of the way and helping bring the family together again.

Supporting children who have experienced displacement, trauma, loss, and uncertainty requires more than expertise alone. It requires a strong support system for the professionals standing beside them every day.

Through weekly supervision, our mental health team shares knowledge, navigates complex cases collectively, strengthens resilience, and reinforces a culture where professionals support one another through the emotional demands of the work.

As our Head of Mental Health, Panagiotis Kostis, explains: โ€œThe stronger and more supported our team is, the higher the quality of care we are able to provide to every childโ€.

๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฅ ๐—ฉ๐—ข๐—œ๐—–๐—˜๐—ฆ: Mamadou arrived in Greece in the winter of 2016, after crossing by boat from Turkey to the island of Lesvos. Seeking safety, he fled Guinea at the age of 17. After two difficult weeks in Moria camp, where he experienced overcrowding, violence, and constant tension, he was transferred to Athens and placed at one of our shelters for teenage boys.

Today, nearly a decade after arriving in Greece, Mamadou has come full circle. He now works as a caregiver at The HOME Project. Each morning, he wakes up children for school, just as staff members once woke him. โ€œYesterday it was meโ€, he says quietly, โ€œand today it is me who has to wake others upโ€. The moment still moves him every time. โ€œI tell them: go to school. Be patient. This will help you so much in the future. It will help you do whatever you want in your lifeโ€.

For the children now arriving in Greece alone, Mamadou represents something deeply important. He is proof that healing, belonging, and independence are possible. And while he continues to dream about building something of his own one day, he already knows what matters most to him.

The students rolled up their sleeves and took part in painting the room themselves, adding their own energy and care to a space that will directly benefit the children they have come to become friends with through our educational collaboration with the school.

Following this, the study room will be enhanced with new furniture, helping to refresh and further support its everyday use. In parallel, the school will also donate additional books to enrich our library. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿกโœจ

The study room is an important part of life in our shelters. It is where our educators support children with Greek language learning and school homework, while also offering a calm and structured environment where they can concentrate, study, and enjoy moments of quiet during their day.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Margarita Markoviti, Professor of Political Science at Deree - The American College of Greece and IE University, and featured fellow speakers Yonous Mohammadi, Managing Director of Greek Forum of Refugees, and Panagiotis Katrakazas, Project Coordinator of BENEFITS.

Stelios highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive, structured and long-term child protection policy that leads to the meaningful integration of unaccompanied and separated refugee children.

He also stressed that child protection cannot be limited to emergency responses, but should also include stability, access to education, mental health support, legal assistance, and real pathways to social inclusion and independence.
