🌱 From the Farm to the Table: Rethinking Food Loss in Greece?

In Thessaly the answer is closely connected to the realities farmers face every day: extreme weather, labour shortages, rising costs, limited infrastructure, but also the potential of cooperation, innovation and stronger local food networks.

As a partner of the EU-funded FOLOU project, MIO-ECSDE recently brought together farmers, researchers, consumers and retailers in Nessonas, near Larissa, for the Greek National Stakeholder Policy Workshop.

🍎 Through a farm visit, intergenerational dialogue and a participatory session on policy recommendations, participants explored practical ways to reduce food loss that respond to the needs of producers on the ground.

💡 The discussions highlighted some clear priorities: affordable solutions, trusted cooperation, shared resources and infrastructure, stronger links with local communities, and support that farmers can actually access and use.

🌊 Ξεκινά ο Ελληνικός Κόμβος για τα Θαλάσσια Απορρίμματα!

Με την υποστήριξη και υπό την αιγίδα του Υπουργείου Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας (ΥΠΕΝ), ξεκινά η λειτουργία του Ελληνικού Κόμβου για τα Θαλάσσια Απορρίμματα, στο πλαίσιο του έργου LIFE SIP Blue (Project 101203482 — LIFE24-IPE-EL-LIFE SIP GR Blue) “Integrated approach for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in Greece”.

Ο Κόμβος, με συντονισμό από το Ελληνικό Κέντρο Θαλάσσιων Ερευνών (ΕΛΚΕΘΕ), δημιουργεί έναν χώρο συνεργασίας και διασύνδεσης της επιστημονικής κοινότητας, της δημόσιας διοίκησης, της αυτοδιοίκησης, των επιχειρήσεων, της κοινωνίας των πολιτών και άλλων ενδιαφερόμενων φορέων, με κοινό στόχο την πρόληψη και μείωση των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων και την προστασία του θαλάσσιου περιβάλλοντος.

Μέσα από τη συνεργασία, την ανταλλαγή γνώσης και την ανάδειξη καινοτόμων λύσεων, ο Κόμβος φιλοδοξεί να συμβάλει ουσιαστικά στην εφαρμογή του Προγράμματος Μέτρων της Οδηγίας για την Θαλάσσια Στρατηγική καθώς και της Ευρωπαϊκής Αποστολής για την Αποκατάσταση των Ωκεανών και των Υδάτων, αναφορικά με την αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων στην Ελλάδα.

🌍 Our Climate – Our Community: connecting people for a more resilient Mediterranean

Our Climate Our Community is a regional campaign strengthening climate awareness and understanding, with a particular focus on communities along the Mediterranean’s southern and eastern shores.

Through science, education, inclusive storytelling and regional cooperation, the campaign works to turn understanding into action — empowering women, young people and local communities to protect what we all share: our climate and our Mediterranean.

🤝 The campaign brings together civil society, public authorities, EU Delegations, regional and intergovernmental organisations, and projects working across the region to build stronger connections and support collective action.

Funded by the European Union through the Wes bca project, the campaign contributes to the implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean and supports the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development (MSESD) and its Action Plan.

Today, MIO-ECSDE actively contributed to the European Commission's consultation ‘Civil Society Perspectives on the Pact for the Mediterranean's Action Plan’ held in Brussels in support of the implementation of this flagship EU initiative launched in November 2025.

Representing MIO-ECSDE were its Chairman Prof. Michael Scoullos, Dr. Emad Adly, General Coordinator of RAED-Arab Network for Environment & Development, and Jeremie Fosse, Director of Eco-union. All were panelists of the session that discussed Community Preparedness and Disaster-Risk Awareness.

MIO-ECSDE emphasised that building trust and confidence among stakeholders is fundamental for the success of the Pact. The network's long-standing work in empowering local communities through participatory approaches, advancing Education for Sustainable Development and recognising the essential role of women and youth has already contributed to this, while at the same time fostering cooperation with and among regional organisations, including the جامعة الدول العربية - League of Arab States, the Union for the Mediterranean, UNEP/MAP, etc.. Building on the region's existing instruments, networks, accumulated knowledge and practical experience is an essential enabling condition for ensuring that the Pact delivers lasting and meaningful impact.
