๐ŸŒฑ Launch of the Forum

๐Ÿค“ MIO-ECSDE recently participated in the launch of the Shared Green Societies Forum in Brussels, a new European platform that brings together civil society, researchers, policymakers and local actors to support a fair and inclusive green transition.

๐Ÿ’ช The Forum aims to strengthen the link between research, policy and practice, ensuring that sustainability transitions are socially just, participatory and grounded in the needs of communities.

It has been amazing to be one of the 15 exemplary projects supported by the UNESCO Office in Venice, in partnership with the Aberdeen Group Charitable Foundation, advancing research and education through innovative approaches. ๐ŸŒโœจ

Our participatory science project on marine litter in the Asterousia Biosphere Reserve demonstrated how community engagement, science, and education can drive collaborative governance and localized solutions for long-term resilience in biosphere reserves. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฌ

The project produced a conceptual model for community-based research and effective marine plastic pollution governance, offering a scalable framework for other biosphere reserves to tackle marine plastic pollution through inclusive, community-driven strategies. โ™ป๏ธ

๐Ÿ™Œ A heartfelt thank you to the 250 volunteers whose contributions made this research possible and continue to shape the future of our oceans! ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒ COP24 of the UNEP/MAP โ€“ Barcelona Convention System has come to an end. Our thanks go to the Secretariat and Egypt, the host country, for the second time since 1991.

MIO-ECSDE had a strong and highly visible presence, actively contributing to the discussions and solutions-oriented exchanges. Our team participated in many side events, sharing insights on the Strategy on WEFE Nexus in the Mediterranean Source-to-Sea Continuum, Decarbonization of the Maritime Industry, Education for Sustainable Development, Blue Economy, and the essential role of civil society and youth in shaping a greener Mediterranean future, among other critical issues for the region.

A highlight of our engagement was the official intervention of Prof. Michael Scoullos, Chairman of MIO - ECSDE and Team Leader of the EU funded Wes bca project, where he emphasized the urgent need for more coherent, transparent, and accountable environmental governance in the region:

โ€œGovernments are constantly running to catch up because of delays in strengthening governance structures, establishing robust institutions that work together, in transparency and with accountability, hand in hand with civil society.โ€

We remain committed to supporting the Contracting Parties and all partners in accelerating action for a sustainable, resilient .

๐ŸŒŠ Zero Pollution Parliament: From Business-as-Usual to Bold, Shared Responsibility ๐ŸŒ

With 50 stakeholders from all European Regional Seas, the Zero Pollution Parliament in Brussels sent a clear message: the business-as-usual scenario is simply not an option anymore.

A striking contrast emerged between two possible paths:
๐Ÿ”น a reactive approach that waits for crises to unfold, and
๐Ÿ”น a proactive, preferred scenario grounded in shared responsibility between the public and private sectors.

And ultimately, the difference between the two comes down to a choice: do we lead, or do we follow?

At the heart of the discussions were the essential โ€œnitty-grittyโ€ elements: clear objectives, measurable targets, and actionable commitments across sectors to address the SOS-ZEROPOL2030 priority pollutantsโ€”nutrients, hazardous substances, microplastics, and underwater noise.

The overarching goal: supporting the operationalization of the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan, the European Green Deal, and the European Ocean Pact.

If we continue on this path of shared responsibility and proactive planning, the preferred scenario doesnโ€™t only appear feasibleโ€”it becomes inevitable.

We were thrilled to connect with and engage in dynamic discussions with motivated and committed stakeholders exploring ways to build resilient, future-proof societies.
