Johdantokurssi suuntasi keskiviikkona kurssin neljännelle osiolle Pohjois-Kreikkaan 🚐

Edellisessä osiossa opiskelijat tutustuivat Ateenaa ympäröiviin alueisiin. Kurssi kiersi museoissa ja arkeologisilla alueilla muun muassa Attikassa, Aitoliassa ja Boiotiassa. Ateenassa opiskelijat kävivät myös bysanttilaisten kirkkojen kiertokävelyllä.

Historiallisen Kreikan lisäksi opiskelijat tutustuvat kurssilla myös nykypäivän Kreikkaan. Kurssiohjelmaan sisältyi vierailu Suomen Kreikan-suurlähettilään Leena Pylvänäisen luona. Kiitos Leena mielenkiintoisesta katsauksesta Kreikan ja Albanian tilanteeseen!

The fourth section of the introductory course started on Wednesday, when the students headed to northern Greece 🚐

In the previous section, the course explored the surrounding regions of Athens, travelling through Attica, Aitolia and Boeotia. In Athens, the students also had a walking tour to the Byzantine churches.

During the course, the students are also introduced to modern Greece. The programme included a visit to the residence of the Ambassador of Finland to Greece, Leena Pylvänäinen. Thank you, Leena, for giving an interesting overview of contemporary Greece and Albania!

We are pleased to invite you to the public opening of Jenny Marketou’s artwork 🔸 Fairground of Earthed Stories 🔸, created for the Institute’s garden 🌳

🕖 20 October 2026, 7–9 p.m.

📍 Finnish Institute at Athens
Zitrou 16, 11742 Athens

The work draws inspiration from Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s Animal Architecture (Eläinten arkkitehtuuri) and from the Institute’s archaeological excavations in Thessaly.

Marketou invites us to explore soil not simply as a material but as a living archive carrying traces of habitation, cultivation, catastrophe, and regeneration.

After the opening, the sculpture will remain in the garden, transforming through its encounters with rain, heat, roots, microorganisms, insects, and birds. It will crack, weather, and erode, gradually becoming entangled with its surroundings.

🌼About the artist🌼

Jenny Marketou was born in Athens and now works between New York and Athens. She is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and educator whose practice brings together art, architecture, ecology, technology, and engineering to create large-scale installations and participatory environments in public space.

Her practice explores ecological systems, multispecies relationships, water, soil, and the possibilities of creating more-than-human habitats.

An evening of Swedish-Greek connections of the 18th and 19th centuries🕵️‍♂️

Yesterday, the 'Philhellenism before Messolonghi' lecture evening brought together many interested participants at the Swedish Institute at Athens.

The event was organised by the Finnish and Swedish Institutes at Athens as well as Swedish Embassy in Athens.

📣 Instituutti hakee tutkijalehtoria Roomaan kaudelle 1.8.2027–31.7.2030

Tutkijalehtorin tehtäviin kuuluu mm. harjoittaa omaa tieteellistä tutkimusta, antaa opetusta, avustaa instituutin julkaisutoiminnassa sekä hoitaa muita instituutin toimintaan liittyviä tehtäviä. Tutkijalehtori työskentelee instituutin johtajan alaisena ja toimii hänen sijaisenaan tarvittaessa.

Tehtävään valittavalta edellytetään tohtorin tutkintoa joltakin instituutin keskeiseltä tutkimusalalta. Tehtävässä vaaditaan hyvää suomen ja englannin kielen taitoa. Lisäksi hyvä italian kielen taito katsotaan eduksi.

Valintaperusteina ovat tutkimussuunnitelman tieteellinen taso ja soveltuvuus instituutin tieteelliseen toimintaan, hakijan tieteelliset ja opetukselliset ansiot, yhteistyökyky, tutkimuskontaktit sekä kielitaito. Palkka tehtävästä on 4000–4950 e/kk kokemuksen mukaan.

👉 Hakuaika päättyy 29.10.2026 klo 16.00 Suomen aikaa.

Monikielisen Euroopan juhlaa 🇫🇮 🇪🇺 🇬🇷

Viime lauantaina vietettiin Euroopan kielten päivää. Ateenassa tapahtumaa olivat järjestämässä 14 lähetystöä ja kulttuuri- ja tiedeinstituuttia yhdessä Lasten oikeuksien verkoston kanssa.

Pedion tou Areos-puistossa riitti kieliä ja vilinää! Päivän aikana tapasimme eri-ikäisiä uteliaita kieltenoppijoita. Erityisen suosituksi osoittautui Muumi-pehmolelun arvonta.

Euroopan kielten päivä kutsuu meitä vaalimaan ja edistämään Euroopan kielellistä ja kulttuurista moninaisuutta. Taustalla on Euroopan neuvoston ja Euroopan komission yhteinen näkemys siitä, että kielellinen monimuotoisuus paitsi olennainen osa Euroopan rikasta kulttuuriperintöä, myös tehokas keino edistää kulttuurienvälistä ymmärrystä.

A feast of Europe’s linguistic diversity 🇫🇮 🇪🇺 🇬🇷

Last Saturday we celebrated the European Day of Languages. In Athens, the event was organised by 14 embassies and cultural institutions, together with the Δίκτυο για τα Δικαιώματα του Παιδιού - Network for Children's Right.

There was a great variety of languages and activities at Pedion tou Areos! During the day, we met eager language learners of all ages. A Moomin draw turned out to be especially popular.

The European Day of Languages calls us to foster and the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe. This reflects the shared conviction of the Council of Europe and the European Commission that linguistic diversity is a powerful means of fostering intercultural understanding and a fundamental component of Europe’s rich cultural heritage.

Johdantokurssi on palannut Peloponnesoksen kierrokselta takaisin Ateenaan! Tänä vuonna kierros jatkui Peloponnesokselta vielä Delfoihin.

Retkellä opiskelijat vierailivat muun muassa seuraavissa kuvien kohteissa:

Suomen Ateenan-instituutti hakee EDUFI-harjoittelijaa aikavälille 1.3.-31.7.2027.

Harjoittelijan tehtäviin kuuluvat avustaminen instituutin toimistotöissä, tutkimustyössä, tapahtumien järjestelyissä ja tapahtumakutsujen laatimisessa, julkaisujen toimittamisessa ja taittamisessa, sosiaalisen median päivittämisessä ja tapahtumien videotallenteiden editoinnissa. Harjoittelija avustaa tarvittaessa myös instituutin tutkimusprojekteissa. Lisäksi toimenkuvaan kuuluvat mahdollisesti myös tehtävät Pohjoismaisessa kirjastossa ja instituutin omassa pienessä käsikirjastossa.
