Instituutin arkeologisen Melitaia Archaeological Programme -projektin kenttätyökausi alkoi reilu viikko sitten.

1. Melitaian Akropoliin kaivausalue varhain aamulla kenttäkauden alussa
2. Kaivaustyö käynnissä
3. Kenttälounas lauantaitöiden aikaan
4. Löytöjen tutkimista ja käsittelyä projektin työtiloissa
5. Auringonnousun aikaan kohti Melitaiaa Domokoksen kylästä
6. Sunnuntain hyvin ansaittu uintiretki vuorilta meren rantaan

----------------------------------

The field season of the institute's Melitaia Archaeological Programme (MELAP) kicked off about a week ago in Central Greece. The fieldwork is shorter than usual this year, but ever more intensive, both at the site on the Acropolis and at the work premises. The photos present a glance of the work and a bit beyond it in the beautiful region of Phthiotida.

1. The site of Melitaian Acropolis in an early morning light
2. Excavation ongoing
3. Saturday lunch break at the site
4. Work on material and find-processing at Melitaia
5. Time to hit the road towards Melitaia at sunrise in Domokos
6. And Sunday = well-deserved beach time.

Last week, the spring celebration of Finnish language school was a wonderful way to conclude the past school year at the Finnish Institute at Athens. The Finnish language school offers Finnish-language education and supports children in maintaining their connection to the language. At the same time, we celebrated the career of Pauliina Mäkinen who is retiring from her position as a teacher at the Finnish language school. Warm thank you to Pauliina for her valuable work and contribution to the Finnish language school over the years. Thank you also to everyone who attended the celebration. The institute wishes everyone a wonderful summer! 🍓

The Finnish Institute at Athens and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens welcome you to the Wittgenstein and Ancient Philosophy conference on 29.6.–1.7.2026.

Ludwig Wittgenstein’s relation to ancient philosophy constitutes a riddle. Wittgenstein was certainly not a philosopher who would have commented at large on classical works like Aristotle’s "Metaphysics", or entered disputes concerning their correct interpretation. On the other hand, it is well known that Wittgenstein had read select classical philosophical authors and was deeply impressed by them: after all, he started his "Philosophical Investigations" with a Latin quotation from St. Augustine’s "Confessiones", and he refers or alludes several times to Plato’s dialogues (e.g. PI §46). Some manuscripts and typescripts contain further references to various ancient philosophers.

The conference Wittgenstein and Ancient Philosophy hosts scholars to discuss Wittgenstein’s relation to the heritage of ancient (Greek and Roman) philosophy in a broad fashion, including not only Wittgenstein’s references and discussions of ancient philosophers, but also more
implicit parallels and contrast between Wittgenstein’s philosophy and the ancient classics.

The event is organized by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Finnish Institute at Athens, in collaboration with the Nordic Wittgenstein Society.

There is no participation fee. This is an on-site event only.

🎥 Institute's interns Annika and Ulla-Maija made a video about their shared internship experience. Together the interns have accomplished many achievements, experienced busy days, and made trips during their spare time. During their internship, Annika and Ulla-Maija have learned new things and met numerous cats. After work, they have always encountered at least one local cat friend who has kept an eye on everything and demanded pets. 😸
