Who we are!

We’re on a mission for protecting marine turtles in the Mediterranean Sea by reducing human induced direct mortality. Organisations from all over the Mediterranean have combined strengths in this project to enhance the conservation of marine turtles in the Mediterranean region.

Three marine turtle species can be found in the Mediterranean. The Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nest here, while the huge Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) is an occasional visitor. Although marine turtles have swam across the planet’s waters for more than 100 million years, human activities are threatening their survival.

Destruction of their feeding and nesting habitats, marine pollution, incidental capture during fishing operations, sea turtles trade for consumption or artifacts are some of the threats sea turtles face.

On the IUCN Red List of threatened species the Loggerhead marine turtle (Caretta Caretta) - Mediterranean sub-population, is classified as Least Concern but conservation dependent (meaning that if conservation efforts stop the population will decrease). The Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is classified as globally Endangered and the Leatherneck (Dermochelys coriacea) is classified as globally Vulnerable.
