Ebrima Janco Sambou

This is a story about a bird, a father, and a legacy of love, care, and compassion. The bird in the picture is a Caspian Tern, a remarkable creature known for its long migrations. In 1997, this bird embarked on its journey from Northern Europe, specifically Denmark 🇩🇰, to Gambia, a long and arduous flight across continents. But fate had a different plan that day the bird could not complete its journey and fell into the waters of Tanji.

It was there that my father, Modou Sambou, found it. He did not hesitate. He rescued the bird from the water and took it home, nurturing it with patience, care, and unwavering dedication. Upon closer inspection, my father discovered a ring on its leg a tiny band of metal that carried a story of its own. From that ring, he learned where the bird came from and obtained the owner’s contact information.

Without hesitation, my father reached out to the owner through email, explaining how he had found and cared for the bird. The owner responded, expressing his intention to come to Gambia to retrieve it. My father, who loved and respected animals deeply, continued to care for the bird, providing it with the best environment he could in Gambia. But despite his tireless efforts, the harsh climate was too much for the bird. It could not survive.

When my father delivered the heartbreaking news to the owner, he was understandably upset. Plans to visit Gambia were canceled, and he requested the bird’s remains and the ring that had connected them. Through it all, my father’s love and respect for life never wavered. He had struggled to care for this bird, but he never gave up, never complained, and never let his compassion falter.

What makes this story even more remarkable is that my father was not only a man of compassion but also a passionate bird watcher. He knew birds not just their species and habits, but their essence. Every bird, every creature, was a story to him, a part of the natural world that he cherished deeply. Looking through his old books and photographs, I recently came across this picture of the Caspian Tern. There were many images, but only two remain, capturing a memory of a day filled with hope, struggle, and love. One photograph, taken the very day he rescued the bird, seems lost to time, but I will continue searching for it, because these memories are precious and worth preserving.

In my research, I learned that Caspian Terns migrate from Europe to West Africa during the European winter, flying thousands of kilometers over land and sea. That little bird, like so many others, embodied resilience and determination. And in rescuing it, my father embodied love, selflessness, and humanity.

My father’s legacy is more than just this story. It is a testament to his kindness, his patience, and his respect for all living things. He was a man who cared deeply, who nurtured life, and who left an indelible mark on everyone and everything around him. May Almighty Allah continue to have mercy on him and the rest of the deceased. And may his story inspire us to cherish and protect the beautiful creatures we share this world with.

Even today, as I look at this photograph, I see more than a bird. I see my father’s hands, his heart, and his spirit. I see his love that went beyond words, his dedication that knew no bounds, and his soul that understood the value of every life, no matter how small or fleeting. This Caspian Tern may not have survived, but through my father, it lived a story of care, connection, and compassion that will never be forgotten.🕊❤️
