🚨 SENEGAMBIA DESERVES BETTER! 🚨

These photos were taken today at Senegambia, one of The Gambia’s busiest tourist and commercial areas. Sadly, the drainage gutters meant to carry rainwater are now filled with plastic bottles, food containers, bags, tyres, and other waste.

This is not just an eyesore—it is a serious public health and environmental threat.

The dangers of dumping waste into gutters include:

⚠️ Blocked drainage, leading to flooding during the rainy season.

⚠️ Stagnant water that becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of malaria and other diseases.

⚠️ Bad odours and pollution that affect residents, businesses, and visitors.

⚠️ Damage to roads and public infrastructure, costing taxpayers millions of Dalasis in repairs.

⚠️ A poor image of The Gambia, especially in an area visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Let’s Keep our environment clean. It’s everyone’s responsibility. Government agencies have a role to play, but so do businesses, residents, street vendors, drivers, and every individual who uses these roads.

Let’s stop throwing rubbish into gutters.
Use the bins provided, dispose of waste responsibly, and encourage others to do the same.

A clean Gambia is a healthier Gambia, a safer Gambia, and a more attractive destination for both citizens and visitors.

If you see someone dumping waste illegally, speak up respectfully or report it to the relevant authorities. Together, we can protect our communities.

🇬🇲 Our Sovereignty Must Be Protected 🇬🇲

Reports emerging from Bullock indicate that Senegalese personnel entered Gambian territory and demolished a military barracks fence, reportedly claiming that the land belongs to Senegal.

If these reports are accurate, this is a matter of serious national concern that deserves the immediate attention of the Government of The Gambia. Every nation has a duty to safeguard its territorial integrity while pursuing peaceful relations with its neighbours.

The Gambia and Senegal share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties. These ties should always be strengthened through dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to established border agreements—not through unilateral actions that could increase tensions.

We call on the relevant Gambian authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident, establish the facts, keep the public informed, and engage with their Senegalese counterparts through diplomatic channels to resolve any border dispute peacefully.

As citizens, let us remain calm, united, and patriotic while allowing the facts to emerge. The sovereignty and dignity of The Gambia are matters that concern us all.

Urgent Call to Action: Clean and Maintain Our Drainage Systems Before Flooding Worsens

The rainy season has only just begun yet many gutters and drainage channels are already heavily blocked with plastic waste, stagnant water, and other debris, as shown in this photo. This situation is alarming and requires immediate attention from both the Government of The Gambia and the Brikama Area Council (BAC).

Blocked gutters prevent rainwater from flowing freely, increasing the risk of flooding in homes, businesses, and roads. Stagnant water also creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes and can lead to the spread of diseases, posing a serious public health concern.

We respectfully urge the Government and the Brikama Area Council to:

1. Conduct an immediate cleaning of gutters and drainage channels across towns and communities.
2. Establish a regular maintenance schedule throughout the rainy season to prevent blockages.
3. Improve waste management services and provide more public waste bins to reduce littering.
4. Enforce environmental laws against indiscriminate dumping of garbage into drains.
5. Launch public awareness campaigns encouraging residents and businesses to keep drainage systems clean.
6. Work with community groups and local leaders to organize regular clean-up exercises.

Flooding is often preventable when drainage systems are properly maintained. Taking action now will help protect lives, property, businesses, and public health.

A clean environment is everyone’s responsibility, but effective leadership and timely intervention from the authorities are essential. Let us act before heavy rains turn this avoidable problem into a disaster.
