Work is underway at Soma School ~ converting an old classroom block into teacher’s accommodation.

This important project, kindly sponsored by the Chant family, will play a key role in attracting female teachers to the school.

Teacher’s accommodation provides safety and security, helping to sustain strong teachers.

A strong partnership exists between Kaira Konko and Soma School, including the fruition of classroom blocks, a community garden and a school library.

This latest project will continue to enrich the school’s education provision, contributing to global goal 4: quality education for all.

Kaira Konko aims to grow Scouting, education and opportunities for young people in and around Soma.

New borehole tank and solar panels at Soma Women’s Garden 🌱

Kaira Konko is proud to assist the community of Soma where possible. This commitment includes a longstanding partnership with Soma Women’s Garden.

With thanks to sponsors, a borehole tank has been replaced, along with new solar panels. This vital equipment will sustain crop growth, enabling the garden to serve its community for many more years to come.

Garden produce is used to supplement school lunches and family meals. Produce is also sold at market, providing an income for families in need. Tended by women in the community, the garden plays a crucial role in feeding and nourishing local people. It provides hope and sustainability.

In December, Kaira Konko looks forward to welcoming a team of Explorer Scouts from Hampshire. They will be spending two weeks in The Gambia, working alongside Gambian Scouts, to fulfill community-based projects.

Over the weekend, the Hampshire Scouts met together for a training weekend at Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre. They developed new skills, including carpentry and bike repairs - equipping them for their project work in The Gambia.

We look forward to working in partnership with the Hampshire Scouts.

Goal 2 of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development aims to achieve zero hunger. However, in The Gambia many children and their families regularly experience hunger.

The provision of a school lunch is a strong incentive for a child to attend school, enabling them to learn and play.

However, schools rely on funding in order to provide their children with a lunch - often their main meal of the day. While the World Food Programme plays an important role in providing food for schools, funding does not cover the full academic year.

Fundraising for Kaira Konko enables food to be delivered to local schools in need.

Thank you for your support in making this happen. Your care and efforts means that Kaira Konko is regarded a place of hope.
