Men For Equality An org. that seeks to address SGBV & promote positive masculinity at all levels of society.

The HeForShe–The Gambia consists of a network of young people (mostly men) from different youth organizations. The network was formed in 2014 to lead the HeForShe campaign initiative targeting young people especially men to address gender-based violence through advocacy and campaigns. The idea is to increase young men’s active participation in response to Gender Based Violence based on evidence that most perpetrators of gender based violence are men and boys and most victims are women and girls.

Young Men, Rights, Responsibility & Positive Masculinity

With support from UNFPA The Gambia through ChildFund The Gambia we are engaging adolescent boys and young people in a two-day training on human rights, gender equality, positive masculinity, gender-based violence (GBV), harmful practices, and adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Bwiam, Foni.

The training is creating a safe space for young people to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and reflect on the messages they receive about what it means to “be a man.”

At Men for Equality we believe that young people are not only beneficiaries of change. They can be part of creating it.

The journey has begun.

Last Monday, in the Lower River Region, Men for Equality convened the first Fathers’ Clubs Project Coordination Meeting, bringing together key regional and district stakeholders as we prepare to take the Fathers’ Clubs initiative into communities.

The meeting provided an opportunity to align stakeholders around the project’s approach, implementation plans and roles and responsibilities of the different partners.

The Fathers’ Clubs initiative will establish 30 Fathers’ Clubs across 30 communities, engaging 240 fathers, while a dedicated radio programme will extend the conversation across the region.

But this is about more than numbers. It is about creating spaces where fathers can learn, reflect and act-strengthening families, protecting children, promoting positive masculinity and contributing to the abandonment of FGM.

We are grateful to the regional stakeholders who joined us as we begin this journey.

Strong communities are built when women and men come together to challenge the norms that hold people back.

We are proud of our partners at Women in Liberation and Leadership - WILL as they continue strengthening the voices, knowledge and leadership of Grandmothers’ in the fight against FGM, SGBV and other harmful practices.

During our Gender Transformative Approach work together, we worked with men while WILL engaged women and communities-a partnership grounded in a simple belief: lasting change cannot happen by working with only one part of the community.

Grandmothers have a powerful role to play in shaping the values and future of generations to come. When their influence is supported with knowledge, dialogue and collective action, they can become powerful champions for the protection and wellbeing of women and girls.

We celebrate WILL and the Grandmothers’ Clubs for keeping community ownership at the heart of this work.

WHAT IF FATHERS COULD CHANGE THE FUTURE?

What if fathers don’t just watch change happen but become part of making it happen?

Across 30 communities in the Lower River Region, fathers are coming together through Fathers’ Clubs to have honest conversations about fatherhood, positive masculinity, gender equality, family wellbeing and the protection of children.

They will learn. They will reflect. They will take action. Because a father’s influence reaches far beyond his home.

When fathers change, families can change.
When families change, communities can change.

This will be more than a club. It will be a movement of fathers choosing to lead differently.

New Project Alert!!!

Something new is beginning in the Lower River Region.

Men for Equality, with support from UNFPA The Gambia and in partnership with Network Against Gender Based Violence, the Gambia is launching the Fathers’ Clubs initiative bringing fathers together to promote positive masculinity, strengthen families, protect children, and contribute to the abandonment of FGM.

30 communities. 30 Fathers’ Clubs. 240 fathers.

And the conversation will go beyond the clubs.

A dedicated radio programme will extend the conversation across the region, reaching more than 50,000 listeners.

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing the conversations, reflections and stories emerging from these communities.

Because the decisions that shape a child’s future often begin at home.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting with the Regional Gender & Human Rights Adviser at UNFPA West and Central Africa, UNFPA Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre for a very enriching conversation on engaging men and boys.

We reflected on Men for Equality’s experience and learning from more than a decade of work in The Gambia, and discussed the importance of taking that experience beyond our national context.

For MFE, the ambition is not to remain an organisation that simply implements projects in The Gambia. We want to contribute to the regional conversation and movement on engaging men and boys, share what we have learned, learn from others across the region, and build meaningful partnerships that can take this work further.

we are grateful for the openness, encouragement and opportunity to explore what greater regional engagement and collaboration could look like.

The Gambia is where our journey began. The region is where we hope to take the learning.

Over the past few days, we had the privilege of co-facilitating an 8-day gender and positive masculinity training for 100 men across three cohorts from communities along the Kotu Stream, as part of the WACA Gambia Project.

From these 100 participants trained, 50 men were selected for an additional two-day Male Champions Bootcamp, taking the learning further into practical skills for community leadership, dialogue, mobilisation, conflict resolution and action.

These 50 Male Champions now join 50 female Gender Champions, creating a network of 100 community champions committed to advancing gender equality and building more inclusive and resilient communities.

At Men for Equality, we believe men must not simply be included in conversations about gender equality. They must be equipped and empowered to become part of the solution.

Last week we partnered with ActionAid International The Gambia to co-create and facilitate a training with men and boys on positive masculinity in LRR. This training was facilitated by
Alhagie Jallow, our Regional Coordinator and a dedicated leader within our Fathers’ Club network.

At Men for Equality, we believe lasting change happens when communities are empowered to lead their own transformation. Our role is not just to deliver activities, but to build the confidence and capacity of local champions to inspire change from within.

Watching Alagie facilitate this training was a proud reminder that leadership can be nurtured. When we invest in people and create opportunities for them to grow, we strengthen local ownership and build a movement that will continue long after any single project ends.
