Today marks a powerful step forward for our coastal communities.
We successfully hosted our final advocacy activity on Strengthening Participatory Fisheries Co-Management for Sustainable Governance, Livelihoods, and Ocean Protection at the GambiaPartner Skill Center in Sanyang.
This initiative is more than just a project, it’s a commitment to empowering local fishers, protecting our oceans, and securing sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations. Seeing community members, stakeholders, and partners come together with shared purpose reminds us that real change happens when everyone has a voice at the table.
As we wrap up this phase, we remain dedicated to building stronger systems, promoting inclusive governance, and ensuring that our marine resources are protected and responsibly managed.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Blue Ventures , CETAG, AFWIC, and all partners, participants, and supporters who made today a success. The journey continues, and together we will keep pushing for a more sustainable and resilient future .

Earlier today, a resolution was submitted to the National Assembly advocating for the exclusion of industrial fishing activities within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) traditionally reserved for artisanal fishing.

This important initiative was co-led by NASCOM and PONSAFAG, in collaboration with SANYEPD, CETAG, and AFWIC, with support from Blue Ventures Conservation.

The resolution forms part of a broader project aimed at defending artisanal fisheries against industrial fishing pressures across West and Central Africa.

This step reflects a shared commitment to protecting livelihoods, strengthening sustainable fisheries, and ensuring long-term ocean conservation.

SANYEPD Empower Women Oyster Harvesters in Kartong.

SANYEPD The Gambia, in collaboration with Blue ventures officially inaugurated a modern solar dryer and canoe boat for the Hallahin Oyster Women Farmers Association (HOWFA) in Kartong.

The initiative addresses long standing challenges faced by women oyster harvesters, such as spoilage due to inadequate drying and storage facilities, and aims to improve oyster processing, preservation, and transportation, while increasing their income and livelihood opportunities.

The event emphasized the importance of unity, collective responsibility and sustainable use of the equipment. Mr. Habib Bojang, SANYEPD Executive Director, along with the Project Manager Mr, Kebba Jabang, commended the women for their dedication and contributions to food security, safe and healthy food production, and local economic development.

Mrs. Isatou Jarju, HOWFA President, expressed sincere gratitude to SANYEPD and Blue Ventures and pledged full ownership and proper maintenance of the equipment. She also highlighted the positive impact the support will have on the women’s work efficiency, safety, and the overall growth of their association.

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in promoting women’s empowerment, sustainable fisheries, and community-driven development, and underscores the critical role of partnerships in supporting coastal communities in The Gambia.
