FISH DATA COLLECTION AND MONITORING.
For the past several years, SANYEPD – The Gambia has been conducting fish data collection and monitoring at the Sanyang Fish Landing Site, contributing to the sustainable management of The Gambia's marine resources.
Throughout this period, the response from fishers, partners, and stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable fisheries management. Our monitoring efforts have strengthened awareness of responsible fishing practices, improved collaboration with local communities, and generated valuable data to support evidence based decision-making for the sustainable management and conservation of marine resources.
During our most recent monitoring exercise at the Sanyang Fish Landing Site, the SANYEPD fish data monitoring team observed that a significant portion of the catch consisted of juvenile fish. This finding raises serious concerns about the sustainability of local fisheries and the long-term health of the marine ecosystem.
The continued capture of juvenile fish threatens the regeneration of fish populations, disrupts ecological balance, and endangers the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
SANYEPD therefore calls on fishers, regulatory authorities, and community leaders to promote sustainable fishing practices, enforce minimum size regulations, and raise awareness about the importance of protecting juvenile fish.
