SANYEPD Empower Women Oyster Harvesters in Kartong.
SANYEPD The Gambia, in collaboration with Blue ventures officially inaugurated a modern solar dryer and canoe boat for the Hallahin Oyster Women Farmers Association (HOWFA) in Kartong.
The initiative addresses long standing challenges faced by women oyster harvesters, such as spoilage due to inadequate drying and storage facilities, and aims to improve oyster processing, preservation, and transportation, while increasing their income and livelihood opportunities.
The event emphasized the importance of unity, collective responsibility and sustainable use of the equipment. Mr. Habib Bojang, SANYEPD Executive Director, along with the Project Manager Mr, Kebba Jabang, commended the women for their dedication and contributions to food security, safe and healthy food production, and local economic development.
Mrs. Isatou Jarju, HOWFA President, expressed sincere gratitude to SANYEPD and Blue Ventures and pledged full ownership and proper maintenance of the equipment. She also highlighted the positive impact the support will have on the women’s work efficiency, safety, and the overall growth of their association.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone in promoting women’s empowerment, sustainable fisheries, and community-driven development, and underscores the critical role of partnerships in supporting coastal communities in The Gambia.
