Sandele Foundation

Sandele Foundation Sandele Foundation exists to provide opportunities for people within coastline communities of The Gambia and Senegal in sustainable development.

Sandele Foundation is a non-profit organisation which spawned from Sandele Eco-Retreat, www.sandele.com. It is the overarching entity that actively supports and promotes grassroots community development including collaboration with The People's Coast Ecovillage Network (which includes Kartong Ecovillage Network): an ambitious ecovillage network initiative for coastline communities in West Africa.

The People's Coast covers about 50km of fairly pristine coastline in The Gambia and Senegal. However there is increasing encroachment and degradation caused by climate change and human settlements and activities. Eleven communities are being actively engaged in ecovillage development. The objective is that the communities will join together to work towards ecovillage development while, working to adapt to, and mitigate, the negative impacts of climate change. At least two participants have been trained in each community in Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) and Permaculture (PDC). At a recent heads of village meeting at Sandele it was proposed that the Alkalos (heads) and key players of the communities be trained in 'mini EDEs.' Sustainable development with resilience can only be possible with grassroots initiatives where opportunities are created for the people to design their own future.

The Sandele Foundation is looking for people willing to learn the basics of beekeeping between April and June 2026.
The sessions will include both theoretical lessons as well as practical insights into the world of bees.
Here’s why you should join:
Bees are essential for pollinating the very plants that we eat in our daily lives. They also are a possible source of income for entrepreneurs willing to harvest and sell the honey that the bees produce.
The sessions will be held mostly in person at the sites of the Sandele Foundation between Kartong and Madina Salam (West Coast Region, The Gambia).
The training is led by Mr Justus Dietsche, who has been a beekeeper for 10+ years in Germany.
The entire course is free, but the few places are limited.
You can sign up via this form:

The selection included cucumber, okra, shallots, and chilli seeds — generously donated by supporters from Germany. 🇩🇪💚

The Sandele team, represented by Abdou Sambou and Foundation Director Simon Gibba, personally handed the seeds to the women leaders of the community. They extend their sincere gratitude to the donors for their meaningful contribution.

Wishing all the women a thriving harvest and a prosperous season ahead. 🌾✨

A warm-hearted reunion 😊

A day before Christmas Eve, the Sandele Foundation hosted an inspiring Ecovillage Network Call, bringing together EDE participants, friends, and former colleagues 👀

The call created a space to share updates, reflect on past journeys, and present current projects. 🤝
„This was another step towards re-igniting the Ecovillage movement along the People’s Coast. We definitely want to continue this call on a regular basis“ - says Sandele Foundation’s director, Simon Gibba.
