Lamin Jammeh Declares Candidacy for Presidency of The Gambia Chess Federation
Former Treasurer Lamin Jammeh has formally announced his intention to contest the presidency of The Gambia Chess Federation (GCF), marking a significant development in the upcoming leadership elections for the national chess governing body.
In a detailed statement released to members, clubs, players, and the broader chess community, Jammeh expressed gratitude for his four-year tenure as treasurer, which began following the 2021 executive elections. He highlighted key achievements, including growing the federation's account from a modest D2,400 balance to over D1,100,000 through collective efforts, despite facing internal conflicts, administrative challenges, and financial irregularities.
"These are not accusations but acknowledgements," Jammeh wrote. "We must confront these facts with humility and honesty to learn from them" and build stronger systems of accountability and transparent governance.
Noting that the previous executive's mandate concluded in 2025, Jammeh called on Vice President Mass Jeng to initiate constitutional processes for free, fair, and transparent elections. He then declared his aspiration to lead as president, citing his extensive credentials: service as treasurer, membership on the FIDE Disability Commission, role as a FIDE Development Instructor, National Arbiter, and representative of Kanuforo Chess Club, where he serves as Secretary General.
Jammeh emphasized a vision of unity, collaboration, integrity, and tangible progress for players, clubs, and officials. He extended appreciation to clubs nationwide that have nominated him and urged the community to build a brighter future together.
The announcement comes amid expectations for renewed focus and growth in Gambian chess in 2026. No date has been confirmed for the elections, but Jammeh's bid positions him as a candidate with insider experience and a commitment to reform.
