Following the presentation of resolutions to the Minister of Trade at his office in Banjul, the FLUG Executive proceeded to the GTU Secretariat in Kanifing for a press conference.

The press conference, the first for both the Executive and the Federation, served to update the media and, through them, the public on the actions taken in observance of Workers’ Day.

During the engagement, the Executive informed the press that a seven-point resolution had been submitted to the Minister. These resolutions set a clear benchmark for improving workers’ conditions, including fair pay through the introduction of a minimum wage, strengthened social protection, gender equality, and other critical concerns affecting the workforce.

The Executive also used the opportunity to call for a stronger, more united voice for workers across the country, urging an end to the long-standing culture of fragmentation and division within the labour movement.

As workers across the globe prepare to observe Workers’ Day, commonly known as May Day 2026, the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia has taken a decisive step in advancing the welfare of workers.

This morning, the Federation formally presented a set of seven resolutions to the Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment.

The presentation took place at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, where the President of the Federation, Omar Ceesay, officially handed over the document to the Honourable Minister, Mod K. Ceesay.

In his statement prior to the presentation, President Ceesay emphasized that the resolutions represent the unified voice of all unions under the Federation, reflecting shared concerns and collective aspirations for workers nationwide.

The resolutions call for key reforms, including the establishment of a living minimum wage, universal social protection for all workers, recognition and protection of informal economy workers, improved occupational health and safety standards, better working conditions, gender equality and the protection of women’s rights in the workplace, as well as the elimination of child labour and forced labour.

With the submission of these resolutions, the Federation has reaffirmed its commitment to actively engage the government and ensure sustained follow-up on their implementation.

Today at the Paradise Suites Hotel, the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG) rose into existence with power, purpose, and unity during its First Congress, signalling a new chapter for workers across the nation.

The atmosphere was electric as a broad coalition of labour forces came together in one space, one voice, and one mission.

Delegates from the Gambia Teachers’ Union, Gambia Press Union, General Transport Union, Dock and Maritime Workers, Tailors Union, National Bakers Union, National Farmers Union, and the Informal Sector stood firmly alongside civil society actors and international partners, including the Solidarity Centre, OTUWA, ITUC, PSI, and CSA (Senegal).

This level of unity sends a clear and unmistakable message: Gambian workers are organised, determined, and ready.

In a strong show of political will, the Honourable Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment, Hon. Mod K. Ceesay, delivered the official launching statement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to engaging and working with FLUG in advancing the welfare of workers and strengthening national development.

The Congress moved decisively from words to action. Delegates adopted the FLUG Constitution, establishing the legal and institutional backbone of the Federation and setting the tone for a disciplined, coordinated, and impactful labour movement.

In a bold step forward, a three-year interim mandate was entrusted to an Executive led by Omar Ceesay, President of the General Transport Union, tasked with steering the Federation through its foundational phase.

What unfolded today was unity in motion, leadership in action, and solidarity at its peak. This marks the consolidation of workers’ voices into a single, powerful force ready to advocate for fair wages, decent working conditions, social protection, gender equity, and respect for the dignity of labour.

✊ One Federation. One Voice. One Power.
