Eight days. Two regions. 60 women. And a vision that reaches far beyond this Lab.
And just like that, we have come to the end of the Young Women’s Leadership Lab in the West Coast and Lower River Regions. But what we have been building over these eight days was never meant to end here.
Over the past week, 60 women have shared experiences, challenged ideas, practised new skills, built connections and explored what it means to lead, mediate conflict and advocate for their communities.
But we are looking beyond the training room.
We are looking towards a future where more women are not only participating in leadership, but occupying the spaces where decisions are made. From local councils to the National Assembly and the highest levels of political leadership, women deserve the opportunity, the support and the confidence to shape the direction of their communities and country.
That future does not happen by chance. It takes preparation, opportunity, solidarity and women who are willing to open doors for those coming behind them.
That is why our mentors matter so much. These are women who have navigated political and leadership spaces, taken their own journeys, and continue to grow in their ambitions. Thank you for sharing your experiences, making room for honest conversations and helping the next generation see what is possible. We celebrate how far you have come and look forward to seeing how much further you will go.
The goal is not simply to have more women in the room. It is to have more women shaping the decisions made in that room.
The Young Women’s Leadership Lab is part of the NextGen Peacemakers (NEXT-P) Project, supported by the European Union in The Gambia, with Democracy International leading implementation in partnership with the Attorney General's Chambers & Ministry of Justice ,the Gambia. We are grateful for this support in creating opportunities for women to strengthen their leadership, contribute to peacebuilding and play a greater role in decision-making.
Eight days may be over. But the connections continue, the mentorship continues, and the vision continues.
Here’s to the women who are leading today, the women preparing to lead tomorrow, and the women who will make it easier for those who come next.
