The Center for Environment, Climate Action and Research mission is to promote citizen science

The Center for Environment, Climate Action, and Research (CECAR) is an organization whose mission is to support building a climate-resilient, environmentally conscious, and sustainable marine resources through citizen science, conservation efforts, policy engagement, capacity building and partnership with other institutions and individuals. This organization is geared towards addressing the effe

cts of climate change and environmental degradation, and as well promote sustainable conservation of marine resource within communities, particularly those mostly often left behind. The programs of the initiative is towards resilient building by encouraging national and local-led change and adaptation. We focus on impactful programs on climate action, environmental justice and marine resource conservation through:

o Advocacy and legislative lobbying for science-based environmental and marine resources conservation policies at national and local level. o Collaborating with other stakeholders and agencies to climate-induced disasters, environment and marine problems. o Campaigns for sustainable conservation and protection of environmental and marine resources. o Host science-policy seminars, conference, and workshops about current climate, environment, and marine issues. o Perform scientific research about climate change, wildlife conservation, and environmental resources conservation.

The 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 continued elsewhere in West Coast Region. We are pleased to share 𝐒𝐢𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐢 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, and 𝐁𝐰𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 has also received trees.

We are so excited about the growing number of institutions that are expressing interest to have trees planted on their property. Together we can provide shade, fruits, and greenery in open spaces during the phase of the project.

Teamwork and collaboration make dreams work, and institutions and individuals certainly proved that! With MUCH appreciation, thank you all for your continued support, collaboration, and donation.

Dear Friends,

As people around world are observing the holy month of Ramadan, we extend my warmest wishes to you and your loved ones. May this sacred time bring you peace, reflection, sense of purpose, compassion, and countless blessings. Good news, we are joining efforts with colleagues in the Gambia to plant trees during this Ramadan.

We currently have a collection of Avocado, Guava, Banana and Jackfruit seedlings that we are giving away for FREE. The condition to recieved this donation that you must be committed to put in interest and effort to take care of the donated tree. Additionally, you should have a reliable water source for the watering of the tree. Finally, we will do a quick check on the tree sometime around the same time next year to see how the tree is growing.

We invite people to contact the cellphone numbers on the flyer to collect the seedlings or chip in a donation to plant a tree in honor of your loved one. With a donation of a seedling or D200, you will support tree planting and monitoring efforts, leaving a lasting legacy of life and a greenery future.

Our efforts for the Ramadan tree planting initiative is aimed at combining the spiritual focus of the holy month with environmental stewardship. Fostering environmental awareness, community engagement, enhancing nature conservation, and creating a sustainable lifestyle, aligns with the Islamic tradition / teachings . The planting of trees as a virtuous act that benefits the earth, animals, and humans is consider a charity (Sadaqah Jariyah).

𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐔𝐄𝐃 - Earlier today, somebody brought a turtle to Paziaud Luc (The owner of Kartong Reptile Farm). The people that brought the turtle to sale, claimed that they themselves bought it from a fisherman from the beach. Luc did his due diligence of educating them that its forbidden under Gambia’s wildlife to capture, kill, or sell a sea turtle. They were rewarded not killing the turtle.

Luc gets in touch with the team of turtle conservation volunteers at Gunjur beach. Lamin Jassey and Abubakr Bless Sidiq Saho responded, and the turtle is currently being cared and observed at the Turtle Village. The turtle will be released sometime tomorrow.

Turtle poaching and bycatch continued to be a major problem in the Gambia. This issues highlights the ongoing need for public engagement, awareness raising, research, and collaboration between conservationists, fisherfolks, and fishing communities. Special thanks to LUC for his strong commitment if supporting wildlife protection and conservation in the country.

𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟏 - Today was a great day. The 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝘼𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙙 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙧 & 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 started successfully. The various presentations were insightful and informative.

The drumming by Black And White Cultural Band Gunjur, art materials displayed by vendors, and overall greenery of Dalaba Eco-Lodge made today’s program memorable and meaningful.

We look forward to seeing all tomorrow for field experience in the morning and an interactive workshop in the afternoon.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: Sulayman Jabang is experienced birder and conservation officer. He has been in the field of conservation and birding for over 15years. Sulayman has a unique experience of wildlife identification expertise (birds) with conservation policies enforcement and habitat protection duties.

Mr. Jabang’s work often involve patrols of protected areas along the souther coastlines, public outreach, birding and wildlife surveys. His career blends his passion for avian life with formal conservation work on wildlife management and policy enforcement responsibilities requiring a strong presence in the field.

Sulayman’s deep knowledge of bird species, habitats, calls, and migration patterns has been quite useful for monitoring and protecting bird populations in Gunjur and other communities. He will be presenting on “𝙊𝙨𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙨 𝙈𝙞𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙙𝙨” and the work of Gunjur “𝙆𝙪𝙣𝙪 𝙆𝙖𝙛𝙤𝙤” at the upcoming 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 & 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Join us this weekend and listen to the exciting presentation of Sulayman as he talks about Ospreys, his skills of identifying and observing birds and deep natural knowledge and field experiences of birds that frequents Gunjur and coastal communities of the country.

More excitingly, Sulayman will be the lead guide for field experience on Day 2 of the conference. He will lead the field tour for the conference participants to participate in birding and as well as share his ecological and indigenous knowledge about trees and herbs around Gunjur.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: Dr. Ebrima S. Njie is a Senior Lecturer and researcher at the University of the Gambia School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Njie specialized in Horticulture, Seed Science, and Environmental Sciences within the School of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences. He is known for using innovative methods, like converting his office into a living laboratory, to tackle food insecurity with students.

Dr. Njie’s research interest is centered on agronomy of horticultural crop, seed science and rural development. Dr. Njie will be presenting on the topic “𝑬𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕”.

Sustainable land management supports birding by preserving/restoring habitats (native plants) that are crucial for bird populations, while birding acts as ecotourism incentivizing conservation and providing data through citizen science.

Birds serve as important indicators of environmental health, boost ecosystems through pollination and insect control and provide countless opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Sustainable land management helps reestablish native vegetation and wildlife habitat that are birds friendly.

We can’t wait to hear Dr. Njie’s insightful discussion on sustainable land management can help foster food security and benefits birds while sustaining the livelihoods of local farmers.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: The Executive Director of WABSA - West African Bird Study Association and a Veteran birdwatcher 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗲, the Executive Director of WABSA - West African Bird Study Association is one of the confirmed speakers who will be presenting at the upcoming 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗲 has extensive field experience of conducting birding tours in the Gambia and Senegal. He has also participated in bird conservation efforts with WABSA - West African Bird Study Association. Lamin also engaged in research works that looks at the effect of climate change on bird's behaviors., migratory pattern, and habitat change among others.

𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗲 and his organization has been involved and participating with stakeholders strengthen vulture protection and conservation in The Gambia. Hooded vultures have been on under severe threats of beheading and diseases.

To protect the remaining species of Hooded vultures, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗲 and WABSA has been strengthening conservation efforts through different mechanisms; such as research, advocacy, ecotourism and community awareness campaign together with Government Departments, NGOs, CBOs to restore vulture habitats and strengthened the wildlife laws and regulations that protects them.

𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗲’s topic of presentation is “𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙀𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙀𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙃𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙑𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙖”. He will be discussing and explaining about the work he has been involved with in investigating poisoning events, collecting toxicological samples, safely managing carcasses, and establishing rapid-response protocols on incidences relating to Hooded Vultures.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: Meet Mr. Buba Camaramara a Senior Travel Consultant at MyGambia. Mr. Camara specializes in Responsible Tourism, Destination Marketing and Hospitality Management. Mr. Camara recently completed the Commonwealth Scholar’s program and graduated with a Masters of Science degree in Responsible Tourism Management from Leeds Beckett University, UK.

The Responsible Tourism Management allowed Mr. Camara to deepen his knowledge and expertise in sustainable tourism practices, community engagement, and destination management. Additionally, Mr. Camara holds a Bachelor's degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the University of The Gambia, where he developed a passion for the tourism industry and gained valuable insights into the sector's dynamics.

As a Senior Travel Consultant with MyGambia coupled with his higher education, Mr. Camara is equipped with first-hand experience in tourism management, research and consultancy. His deep knowledge and expertise on responsible tourism strategies within marketing, operations and product development has made him a great resource for 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 throughout this years. We are excited to have him again year. He will be his outstanding passion and strong commitment to promoting responsible tourism and contributing to the sustainable development of destinations.

Bubacarr will be speaking at the 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. His presentation shall be focused on ”𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧”. 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: Lamin Jassey is the Executive Director of the Gunjur Conservationists and Ecotourism Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources in The Gambia.

Mr. JASSEY possessed over 10 years of hands-on experience in advancing environmental justice, climate action,
ecotourism development, and sea turtle conservation in the
Gambia, West Africa. His expertise includes but is not limited to climate marine turtle monitoring, permaculture, human potential development, community mobilization, and advocacy to address environmental degradation, climate change, and natural resources.

Mr. JASSEY is among the respected Gambians that are advancing conservation efforts and promoting Turtle-based ecotourism in the Gambia. Him and his team are protecting marine turtles along the southern coastline of the Gambia and attracting visitors, providing economic incentives for local communities to protect turtles and their habitats, offering educational experiences about conservation, and supporting research through activities like guided nesting beach patrols, hatchery monitoring, and hatchling releases.

Throughout these years, Mr. JASSEY continued to raises awareness of issues relating to food insecurity, coastal sand mining and illegal fishing, advocating for the rights of Indigenous coastal communities. He emphasizes sustainability, community participation and collaborative governance in fishery management and environmental protection. Mr. JASSEY will be speaking at the 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. His presentation shall be focused on ““𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚”.

Lamin is expected to walk the conference through the model and achievements that his team has made in balancing conservation and ecotourism in the Gambia, and how local participation in marine turtle conservation has helped create sustainable livelihoods and foster stewardship in the coastal community of Gunjur village, The Gambia.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑: Tamba JEFANG, A professional ornithologist with over 𝟮𝟱𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱. Mr. JEFANG will be one of the speakers at the 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 on Saturday, December 13th, 2025.

As an avid traveler and explorer, Mr. JEFANG has journeyed around West Africa and the United Kingdom to observe diverse birdlife. These trips has expanded his knowledge and enriched his experiences in birding. Tamba believes that sharing his observations and encounters with fellow birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, conservationists, environmentalists, policy makers, tourists and locals is essential for fostering a sense of responsibility conservation of our feathered friends.

Mr. JEFANG will be spending time in Gunjur village this coming weekend to speak with the participants at 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 about his passion, knowledge, experience, and unwavering commitment to avian preservation.
