Eco Travel Gambia is a nonprofit organization promoting environmental restoration, ecological conservation, voluntourism, ecotourism, climate change mitigation and adaptation issues, and sustainable development initiatives in The Gambia. ๐„๐œ๐จ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ ๐†๐š๐ฆ๐›๐ข๐š is running programs geared towards protecting Gambia's environmental and ecological resources, as well as promoting community-led ecotourism activities.

We are delighted to announce that another nest has successfully hatched, producing more than 70 baby sea turtles.

The hatchlings will be released into the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, 26 September 2026 at 6:45 PM at CETAG Turtle Village, Gunjur.

๐€๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐’๐ž๐š ๐“๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ - Our sea turtle monitoring team has today discovered another turtle nest along our coastline in Gunjur village, The Gambia.

After assessment, the team confirmed the nest is located in a safe area. Since we could not estimate how long ago the eggs were laid, we have left the nest undisturbed to avoid interfering with the incubation process.

The nest has been marked with a protective fence for easy identification and monitoring.

Our team will continue to provide regular patrols to ensure the nest is protected from local poachers, stray dogs, and Nile Monitors that may attempt to excavate the eggs.

We thank our dedicated monitoring team on the ground for their continued commitment to protecting our endangered sea turtles.

A sea turtle carapace has been discovered ashore along the coastline of Kartong, The Gambia.

This is yet another concerning case, adding to the growing number of turtle deaths reported along our coast in recent months. The cause of death โ€” whether due to poaching or natural causes โ€” remains unknown at this time.

Sea turtles are protected species under the Gambiaโ€™s Biodiversity Act. Our team will continue to strengthen efforts to protect them and raise public awareness about the socioeconomic and ecological importance of sea turtle.

Today our Gunjur Conservationists & Ecotourism Association team responded to an unfortunate poaching incident along our monitoring coastline at Gunjur beach.

A nesting mother turtle came ashore last night and successfully laid over 100 eggs. While returning to the sea, she was captured by a local poacher who then attempted to sell her for D10,000.

Fortunately, one of our local volunteer conservationists encountered the poacher, who had tied the turtle's flippers and placed her on a wheelbarrow for sale. Acting swiftly and courageously, our volunteer posed as a buyer and told the poacher he needed to rush home to get the money, asking him to wait.

On his way, the volunteer immediately tipped off our turtle monitoring team. A report was also made to the local police station and an officer was dispatched to the scene.

The turtle was successfully rescued by our team and safely released back into the ocean.

The poacher was engaged and sensitized about the illegality of his actions and the importance of marine turtle protection under Gambian law.

As part of our corrective measures, we will be working with him through our "๐๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ซ-๐“๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐-๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ" initiative. He will be educated by our team on the importance of sea turtle conservation, the laws governing their protection, and their critical socio-ecological role. We will also seek to learn from his traditional knowledge about poaching practices and the black-market demand for turtle meat, to help us strengthen our conservation strategy.

Kudos to our turtle conservation team, volunteers, and the local police for their swift collaborative action in giving this mother turtle a second chance at life. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข

For unknown reasons, she decided to turn back and returned to the ocean without nesting.

Our monitoring team will be on patrol again tonight and will keep a close watch in hopes of a successful nesting.

Together, we are making great efforts to protect nesting marine turtles and their nesting beaches along the southern coastline of The Gambia. ๐Ÿ’š

On patrol this morning at Gunjur Beach, our turtle monitoring team has discovered a freshly laid sea turtle nest located less than few meter from the high-water mark.

As shown in the attached video, the nest is positioned directly in the active water zone. The distance between the nest chamber and the incoming tide makes it critically unsafe. Any high tide or storm surge will inundate and destroy the entire clutch.

๐€๐‚๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐ ๐“๐€๐Š๐„๐: our team has relocated the eggs to our protected hatchery site approximately inland from the threat zone. The hatchery provides controlled incubation conditions and has a higher chance hatching success compared to the location that the nest was located.
