CASA Gambia: Advancing Breast Cancer Awareness, Supporting Healthier Communities

This October, CASA Gambia joins communities around the world in raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Breast cancer can affect anyone. By knowing the signs, seeking timely medical advice and encouraging regular screening, we can help save lives.

Breast cancer screening and check-ups are available at major health centres across The Gambia. We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to get checked and seek professional medical advice when needed.

Let us use this month to educate, support and stand together with survivors, families and everyone affected by breast cancer.

Books for Literacy, Books for Change

Through the generous support of Book Aid International, CASA Gambia had the opportunity to visit Jokkolabs Banjul and donated reading books to the Riddles of the Sun Education Initiative, supporting its literacy programme at St. Therese’s Lower Basic School.

The books will contribute to The Angel Project on Literacy, a classroom intervention launched in October 2025 to strengthen literacy competencies among Grade 1 students and promote active reading.

Receiving the donation, Madeline Ileleji, Programme Coordinator, said:

“The donation will greatly support our Literacy programme at St. Therese’s Lower Basic School. It will significantly impact this year’s academic intervention as we work toward incorporating active reading into our engagement with the students.”

We are grateful to Book Aid International for making this contribution possible and for supporting our efforts to expand access to books and strengthen literacy within communities.

📚Strengthening Communities Through Access to Knowledge

In September 2026, CASA Gambia donated books to Tom’s Library in Mamuda, supporting access to educational resources and promoting reading and learning within the community.

This contribution was made possible through our partnership with Book Aid International, whose support continues to help us bring books and knowledge closer to communities. We sincerely thank Book Aid International for making this initiative possible and for partnering with us in advancing access to knowledge.

We also appreciate the team at Tom’s Library for the warm welcome and their continued commitment to creating spaces where communities can read, learn and grow.

For the past four years, we have partnered with Book Aid International, receiving 3,682 brand-new books and reaching more than 7,000 people across schools, libraries, prisons, and communities.

Inspired by this vision, CASA Gambia has invested immensely in education, supporting over 400 students through our sponsorship programme, driven by our sister organisation, CASA Nederlands.

In the 2024/2025 academic year, we launched My Education, My Tree — Growing Together, combining education with climate action. So far, 180 fruit trees have been planted in schools and students’ homes.
