The Balanta community made history over the weekend by hosting its first-ever National Cultural Exhibition, turning the spotlight on a heritage rich in music, dance, traditional ceremonies and cuisine.

While the celebration offered a vivid glimpse into Balanta traditions, organisers also issued a warning that minority languages are at risk of disappearing if greater efforts are not made to preserve them.

Tourism Minister Abdoulie Jobe described cultural traditions as "living treasures," as the event blended celebration with a call to protect a heritage organisers fear could one day be lost.
