URR YOUTH CHAIRMAN'S LEARNING JOURNEY IN CHINA CONTINUES

The Upper River Region Regional Youth Committee continues to provide updates as our Chairman, Mama Salieu Jallow, participates in the Youth Startups and Leadership Training Programme in China.
Today’s programme included visits to BYD, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer; TECNO, a renowned mobile phone company; a museum; and a robotics facility. These visits provided valuable insights into China’s advancements in technology, innovation, and industrial development.
These experiences underscore the importance of investing in knowledge, skills, and innovation to create opportunities for young people and accelerate national development.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP & STARTUP TRAINING – CHINA 🇨🇳
The Upper River Region Youth Committee is pleased to inform the general public that our Regional Youth Chairman, Hon. Mama Salieu Jallow, has safely arrived in Beijing, China, to participate in a two-week intensive training programme on Youth Leadership and Startups.
The training has officially commenced and will run for the next 14 days, providing an important opportunity to acquire new knowledge, develop leadership skills, explore innovative startup ideas, and build meaningful connections for youth empowerment and sustainable development.
This journey represents more than personal growth; it is an opportunity to learn, exchange experiences, and explore practical solutions to the challenges facing young people in the Upper River Region and The Gambia at large.

We wish our Chairman a successful, fruitful, and inspiring training experience in China.

OFFICIAL NOTICE

DEPARTURE OF THE REGIONAL YOUTH CHAIRMAN OF THE UPPER RIVER REGION FOR CHINA

This is to officially inform the public that Hon. Mama Salieu Jallow, Regional Youth Chairman of the Upper River Region (URR), has departed Banjul for the People’s Republic of China to participate in a two-week training programme on Youth Startups and Leadership, effective 15th October 2026.

The training, organized by the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) under China’s Ministry of Commerce, aims to strengthen entrepreneurial skills, leadership capacity, strategic thinking, and international cooperation.

This international engagement is expected to provide valuable knowledge, experiences, and opportunities that will contribute to youth empowerment and development in the Upper River Region and The Gambia at large.

We wish Hon. Mama Salieu Jallow a successful and fruitful training programme.

COMMUNITY YOUTH TRAINING

The Regional Youth Committee Chairperson, alongside the District Youth Chairman for Tumana, conducted a community-based training for young people in Sanunding Village.

The training focused on key areas including Peace and Conflict Management, Civic Education, and Leadership, equipping young people with knowledge and skills to contribute positively to their communities.

We are pleased to extend this opportunity to other youth groups, youth committees, and community-based youth organizations interested in benefiting from similar training.

The training is FREE OF CHARGE and will be conducted in your own community and setting, making it accessible and convenient for young people.

Interested youth groups or committees can contact the Regional Youth Committee Chairperson to make the necessary arrangements.
Special thanks to the Muhammed Drammeh, TAD Director for encouraging and supporting the young people for this activity to be hosted at their institution

Bintou Mballow from Sare Bojo emphasized the role of peer pressure and influence in encouraging some young people to consider the “backway.”

She noted that the decisions of friends and peers, as well as the desire to follow the paths others have taken, can strongly influence young people’s choices, sometimes without fully considering the risks and realities involved.

Saikou Manneh of Tumana also shared his perspective on why some young people choose the “backway” route.

He noted that some young people turn to irregular migration after struggling or dropping out of their educational journey, believing that going abroad is their only remaining hope for a better future.

He also highlighted the challenges facing agriculture, noting that farming is no longer as lucrative as it was in the past, making it difficult for many young people to see agriculture as a sustainable source of livelihood.

His contribution emphasized the need for better opportunities in education, employment, entrepreneurship and agriculture for young people.

Another participant, Sonko, also shared his perspective on the factors influencing young people to consider irregular migration.

He highlighted community stereotypes and social pressure, noting that some young people may feel left behind or judged because they have not travelled abroad. He also spoke about the pressure some young men face when seeking marriage, including the perception that it can be difficult to find a wife if you are not a “semester” — a term commonly used to refer to someone who has travelled abroad and returned.

His contribution highlighted how social expectations, peer pressure, and perceptions of success can also influence young people’s decisions.
