Fifty (50) community facilitators from CRR North and South have completed the Aawadee “Plant” Two Project Management Module Training after 12 days of intensive learning and collaboration at the Basse Regional Education Directorate.

The training strengthened participants’ skills in resource mobilization, project management, and risk management—practical tools they can immediately apply to support community-led development initiatives.

Beyond receiving certificates, these facilitators are returning to their communities with the knowledge and confidence to plan projects more effectively, promote transparency and accountability, and help local initiatives achieve lasting impact.

By investing in local leadership and capacity, Aawadee is helping communities build stronger foundations for sustainable development.

Congratulations to all participants and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this initiative.

At Tostan ,we believe development starts at the grassroots level. Through the Reinforcement of Parental Practices (RPP) initiative, caregivers and parents in our partner communities are actively engaged to strengthen family support systems and promote positive social change.

Ebrima Kinteh, NHRC, Principal Regional Administrator for the Central River Region and Upper River Region, highlighted the importance of RPP in helping communities abandon harmful social norms and build a better future for children.

In The Gambia, development is strongest when communities lead.

In 2025, Tostan trained 43 ward councillors in participatory governance and supported 1,181 parents and caregivers with local-language learning sessions on early childhood development.

These efforts are helping advance the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan by strengthening local leahdership, supporting families and making decision-making more inclusive.

Sustainable change happens when communities are not seen as beneficiaries, but as partners and leaders.

Together, we are bringing citizens and institutions closer.

At the busy streets of Basse in the Upper River Region (URR), where businesses and public services continue to serve as the nucleus of development, taxation remains a key pillar of national growth and accountability.

Though not always spoken about loudly, Tostan Gambia’s commitment to tax compliance continues to stand out among institutions and businesses in the region. The organisation emerged, for the second time, as a winner of the prestigious URR Taxpayers’ Award at the 2025 award ceremony, an honour reserved for the most tax-compliant entities.

Congratulations to Tostan Gambia for once again earning recognition among the top awardees. Indeed, our motto, “Dignity for All,” is not only seen and felt in communities, but also reflected in our commitment to responsible taxation and national development.

The partnership reflects a shared vision of promoting sustainable community development, empowerment, and social inclusion across The Gambia.

Tostan was represented by the National Coordinator, Programme Officer, and MERL Officer, while SOS Children’s Villages was represented by the National Director and Communications Officer.

Laws can help protect rights, but lasting change only happens when communities are included in the conversation. Across many contexts, strict enforcement alone has often pushed practices underground rather than creating understanding or collective ownership of change.

At Tostan ,we believe laws are most effective when accompanied by inclusive dialogue, community engagement and social inclusion. That is why we encourage respectful conversations that allow communities to reflect, participate and lead sustainable change from within.

Tostan The Gambia on 13th May 2026 convened an awareness-raising and influencing seminar focused on community wellbeing, human rights, child protection and governance engagement with Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) members in the Central River Region.

The programme was funded by United Nations Population Fund through ChildFund.

The seminar provides an important opportunity for Tostan and TAC members to share programme content and discuss how it contributes to community wellbeing, child protection and broader development initiatives. It also serves as a platform for gathering feedback from TAC members to improve implementation and strengthen community impact.

The overall goal of the engagement is to promote vibrant community participation, human rights advocacy and sustainable wellbeing initiatives throughout the region.

Community-led dialogue and sustained social norm change remain central to transforming harmful practices. Through open reflection and collective learning, communities are increasingly challenging practices such as child marriage while advancing the health and well-being of children.

Fatou Darboe, a 13-year-old Grade 6 student from Bushtown, is among young advocates calling for girls’ education and the abandonment of child marriage across rural communities in The Gambia. She speaks with clarity about the importance of schooling and the risks associated with early marriage.

She notes that child marriage can expose girls to serious health risks for both mother and child, while often ending their education prematurely. For Fatou, education is not only a right but a pathway to dignity, opportunity, and stronger communities.

She calls on parents to support girls in completing their education and to protect them from harmful social norms that limit their potential.

By strengthening collaboration and fostering open dialogue, communities are building safer environments where children can grow, learn, and thrive.
