BEYOND THE BORDERS: A NEW VOICE CELEBRATING AFRICA THROUGH POETRY

In a time when African stories continue to search for wider spaces and louder voices, Beyond the Borders: A Collection of African Poems emerges as a poetic celebration of Africa, its people, landscapes, cultures, identity and dreams.
Written by Lasana Sidibeh, a young Gambian writer from Wuli Jah K***a, Beyond the Borders is a collection that seeks to look beyond geographical boundaries and discover the beauty that exists within Africa and its people.
Sidibeh, born in November 2004, pursued his education in The Gambia and graduated from Nasir Senior Secondary School in Basse before continuing his studies at Gambia College. His literary journey reflects a deep interest in poetry, African identity and the power of words to reshape how Africa is seen and understood.
At the heart of Beyond the Borders is a celebration of Blackness, African culture and the African landscape. Through imagery and metaphorical language, the poems explore beauty, ambition, identity and the hopes of a continent still writing its own story.
The collection presents Africa not simply as a place, but as a living experience — rich in culture, colour, history and possibility. Its poetic language draws inspiration from African land, wildlife, people and traditions, creating images that invite readers to appreciate the continent from a different perspective.
One of the strongest elements of the collection is its attempt to challenge negative perceptions of Africa. Rather than allowing Africa to be defined by hardship alone, Sidibeh uses poetry to highlight its beauty and dignity while acknowledging the realities that continue to shape its people.
The title Beyond the Borders itself suggests movement — beyond physical boundaries, beyond stereotypes and beyond limitations. It is an invitation to imagine Africa differently and to recognize the creativity, strength and beauty that already exist within it.
