Bansang Hospital Appeal

Bansang Hospital Appeal The BHA is a small charity based in Northamptonshire, England. We believe the story of Bansang Hospital is unique.

The Bansang Hospital Appeal, founded in 1992 by Anita Smith MBE MRG, is an award winning charity dedicated to improving healthcare delivery in a remote region of The Gambia, West Africa

To Donate please click on the 'Learn more' button Since 1992, we have been supporting the wonderful staff of Bansang Hospital – helping them to deliver exceptional care outcomes for the 600,000 Sub-Saharan Africa

ns who depend upon this critical healthcare resource. Working within financial constraints that would have seen western healthcare systems crumble and fail, Bansang Hospital has instead fought back from the despair that was all pervading in 1992. Today, it has near 100% staff retention, and is making exceptional progress towards the Millenium Development Goals for health. Honouring Dedication at Bansang Hospital

Today, we proudly recognize one of our outstanding staff members Nurse Tacko Kandeh.

Tacko represents the true spirit of nursing: commitment, compassion, and consistency. Every day, she works tirelessly to ensure that every patient under her care receives the highest standard of service, comfort, and attention.

Her dedication does not go unnoticed. As our CEO shared:

“When I came to review my patient for surgery in the morning, Tacko, the night nurse, had already completed all the preoperative management perfectly. This is what we need.”

These words reflect the level of professionalism and responsibility she brings to her work. Whether on a busy night shift or handling delicate tasks, Nurse Tacko always delivers with excellence.

We are truly grateful for the service she continues to render to the people of Bansang and the surrounding communities. Her impact is felt by her patients, colleagues, and the entire hospital.

Thank you, Nurse Tacko Kandeh, for your unwavering dedication. You are valued, appreciated, and celebrated.

🎁 Festive Hope Appeal: Help Open Bansang’s ICU ✨

It’s Giving Tuesday - a global day of generosity - and the perfect moment to make a life-changing impact.

We’re so close to completing the first ever six-bed Intensive Care Unit at Bansang General Hospital - a lifeline for more than 600,000 people. Right now, the hospital relies on a cramped 3-bed room for all intensive care… so this new ICU will be truly transformational. 💙

Thanks to the partnership between BHA and Power Up Gambia, the structure is up. Now, as part of our Festive Hope Appeal, we urgently need your help to complete the final hospital-grade finishing. 🛠️🏥

To open the ICU, we must raise £25,000 to complete essential facilities and equipment, including:

🛏️ ICU beds • 📟 monitors • 💨 oxygen • ❄️ air-con • 🚿 plumbing • 🔌 electrics • 🧱 tiling & finishing — plus sustainable medical equipment to keep the ICU running for many years.

The medical team, led by Senior Nursing Officer Mr Lamin S Camara, has already completed advanced Critical Care training — they’re ready to deliver lifesaving treatment 24/7 the moment the doors open. ❤️‍🩹

One of today’s tasks: water lily hunting! 🌸🙃

Did you know? Friends of BHA generously funded a Tilapia Fish Farm right within the hospital grounds. This incredible initiative ensures that patients have access to fish protein - a vital part of their diet that supports recovery and healing.

The water lilies we were looking for play an important role too! They provide shade and shelter for the fish, help control algae, oxygenate the water, and even serve as an additional food source.

A big well done to our amazing Environmental Team, led by Lasan, for their continued dedication and innovative work. 👏💚

You can help support projects like this and make a lasting impact - donate today 💧💙

Meet six-month-old Amadou 💙

He was born with a club feet and is currently receiving treatment to help correct it. Every two weeks, his plaster cast is gently replaced as part of this life-changing process.

It was such a pleasure to meet Tijan, our amazing Club Foot Coordinator. Over the past five years, Tijan has successfully treated 485 babies, a truly incredible achievement that has transformed so many young lives.

We’re thrilled to welcome Tijan to the Bansang Family, and Amadou’s family are deeply grateful for this vital care, provided completely free of charge.

The photo shows Amadou’s club feet, and thanks to Tijan’s skill and dedication, his journey to recovery is well underway. Even more inspiring, Tijan is now training local staff to continue offering this life-changing treatment , giving every baby and child affected the chance to grow up healthy and active. 🌍💪

Our happy chickens have started laying, just look at all those eggs and the size of the birds. Big thank you to Lasana and Mr Jammeh who guided us through the process of raising healthy chickens that will provide essential protein that is an essential part of the patients diet during recovery. Presently they need to sell the eggs so that they can build up the supply of chicken feed. 👏
