Long overdue. At last.
This is a commendable move, well done of fisheries and water resources.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources has stepped up its nationwide fight against illegal fishing, resulting in several arrests and the seizure of banned fishing nets.
The operation, led by fisheries officers, targeted dealers selling illegal fishing gear in areas including Basse and the Greater Banjul Area. Authorities confirmed that a shopkeeper and three foreign nationals were arrested during the crackdown.
Officials stated that the suspects have been charged under the Fisheries Act 2007, which prohibits fishing nets with mesh sizes below 40 millimeters.
Authorities warned that illegal fishing continues to threaten marine life, worsen overfishing, and reduce fish stocks across the country. They also cautioned that these activities could eventually lead to higher fish prices and increased food insecurity for many families who rely on fishing for survival.
