As we join the world in commemorating Youth Climate Action Day. On this remarkable day, we take pride in highlighting the significant strides made by development-oriented Citizen in climate adaptation programs, particularly within Banjul City, through previous resilient programs and the most recent progressing Future Proof Project. As an organisation led by passionate young individuals, Development Oriented Citizens of Banjul - D.O.C ed Citizens is steadfast in its mission to forge a resilient and sustainable future through dynamic youth engagement and innovative climate solutions.

Our young champions are at the forefront of initiating and executing tree planting initiatives that are redefining the landscape of Banjul City. These efforts are not only enhancing the city's natural beauty but also playing a pivotal role in improving air quality, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering urban biodiversity. The commitment to raising trees represents a tangible and transformative approach to climate adaptation that resonates with our collective goal of sustainability.

D.O.C. vision extends beyond local impact. We are devoted to becoming a beacon of inspiration for communities worldwide. Our united front, driven by the vigour and determination of youth, embodies a model of what can be achieved when communities collaborate towards a common purposeโ€”creating a thriving planet for future generations.

As we celebrate the spirit of youth and their invaluable contributions to climate action, let us strengthen our resolve to support and expand these initiatives. Together, we can amplify our impact and inspire others to join the movement.

Thank you to D.O.C. inner city greening volunteers for their selflessness. Your work in planting and nurturing trees within does more than transform landscapes; it revitalises our environment and strengthens community bonds. Like fallen trees standing tall once more through the care they receive, your commitment breathes life into our mission, paving the way for a sustainable future.

Thank you to our focal partner, Banjul City Council BCC, for the opportunity and trust given to spearhead the Inner City Greening Component. Thank you to Future Proof Banjul for supporting us with all the integral logistics and support needed to thrive.

Development Oriented Citizens, alongside the international Open University Students, recently took action to plan 100 trees three weeks ago at Banjul fish landing area. These coconuts were installed with tree guards together with on site coastal clean up coordinated by Future Proof Banjul. This initiative is part of our dedication to the International Coastal Clean Up Day.

On this significant day, we reaffirmed our promise to collaborate with local authorities to ensure Banjul Beach remains resilient against global threats. Protecting our beach from non-biodegradable litter is crucial for marine life sustainability.

Itโ€™s our collective duty to safeguard our coastal communities and combat sea level rise and coastal erosion. ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ”— Together, we can make a difference. Let's keep taking action!

On 30th August, Development Oriented Citizens, in collaboration with Banjul Scout, hosted a successful tree planting initiative in Banjul, together with their partners from Guinea Bissau Scout who have been participating in an exchange program over the past week.

The event was spearheaded by Councillor for New Town West, Pa Momour Ceesay, and Councillor for New Town East, Ebou Sarr. This activity aligns with the Scout group's mission to provide community service, elevate standards, and contribute to social welfare.

The tree planting took place at Mosque Road and Peel Street, drawing more than a hundred enthusiastic attendees. The youthful energy was palpable as participants came together with a shared passion for making a positive impact. Entertainment filled the air, and despite language differences, everyone harmonized beautifully to the emotional spectacular songs performed.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Banjul Scout branch and our supportive partners from the Republic of Guinea Bissau for joining hands with us in this meaningful endeavor, adding value and greenery to our beloved community.

We are filled with hope and excitement as we share our latest tree-planting event at the Banjul Sea Landing Site, in partnership with the International Open University - IOU . This heartwarming initiative marks our fourth collaborative effort over the past two years, dedicated to fostering community service and nurturing our environment.

Banjul, lying just 2 meters below sea level, faces significant challenges from soil erosion and the ever-present impacts of climate change. In response to these challenges, we planted 100 resilient dwarf coconut treesโ€”symbols of hope and renewal. ๐ŸŒฑ These trees will not only help prevent soil erosion but will also rejuvenate our beautiful beach, providing shade and creating a serene, inviting environment for all.

With the enthusiastic support of nearly 100 participants, including passionate IOU students, local business operators, and the steadfast Gambia security monitoring officers, we united our efforts to bring this vision to life. Together, we are building a brighter, more sustainable future.

IOU's inspiring policy encourages students to complete 216 hours of community service to graduate, and our collaboration fosters these impactful activities. Through tree planting and city clean-ups, we are sowing the seeds of environmental protection and community resilience that will grow for generations to come.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Future Proof Project for always assisting us with the logistics needed to maximize the efforts of our volunteers. Your unwavering support helps us achieve the best possible outcomes in these meaningful initiatives.

We also deeply appreciate the resources provided by Ecowas - Economic Community of West African States through the National Environment Agency Gambia National Environmental Agency, enabling us to efficiently use tricycles under the directives of Ministry of Environment-MECCNAR These generous provisions empower us to take significant steps towards ensuring a resilient community.

As we look to the future with hope and determination, we thank all who participated and supported this initiative. Letโ€™s continue to unite and work together to create a greener, more sustainable, and hopeful future for Banjul! Thank you to the Future Proof Banjul for always supporting us. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Development Oriented Citizens had a successful tree planting activity which which took place in New Town East community, New Primet, led by Councillor Ebou Secka. This initiative aimed to enhance the green cover of Primet Streets, which had very few plants available. The event saw over a dozen new trees planted, marking a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and resilient environment.

Planting trees plays a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases contributing to global warming, and release oxygen, thereby improving air quality.

Additionally, trees provide shade, reduce urban heat, and enhance the overall aesthetic of the community. The new trees will contribute to a healthier environment, offering long-term benefits such as reducing energy costs, preventing soil erosion, and fostering biodiversity.

The planting activity saw enthusiastic participation from various community members, each playing a vital role:

Elders of the community partake on the activity, thus inspiring younger people to be more committed to greening.

The Primet police personnel does not only serve in policing the community but have equally joined in providing shades to the community. What a selfless public servants.

This collaboration highlights the importance of involving the community in sustainability efforts. By taking leading steps, the residents ensure long-term care and maintenance of the trees, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

The success of this initiative would not have been possible without the immense support and leadership of Councillor Ebou Secka and the New Town East Ward. Their commitment to environmental sustainability sets a commendable example.

This event marks the beginning of the summer planting season, and we look forward to ongoing engagement with other councillors and community members in similar activities across different wards. Together, we can continue to build a greener and more resilient community.

Thank you, Councillor Secka, and all participants for making this event a success.

Development-Oriented Citizens is thrilled to be among the beneficiaries to be handed over with two allocated tricycles from the Ecowas - Economic Community of West African States allocation, under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment-MECCNAR and the facilitation of the National Environment Agency Gambia

The opening was done by Dr. Dawda Badjie, the Executive Director of the National Environmental Agency, who emphasized the complementary role that civil society plays in complementing his departmental role. Thus, he stressed that twenty-five tricycles were initially offered by the councils with the exception of Banjul City Council and Kanifing Municipal Council, and an extra ten were issued to the health sector for the disposal of clinical waste.

The N.E.A Director frowned at the short lifespan of most of the tricycles earlier disbursed, and some of them were hindered by trivial issues like deflated tires or minor technical faults that led to their underutilization. The director stressed that they have taken alternative priorities for organizations that are committed to making an impact within their society, especially those that are working on environmental enhancement programs. He urged the beneficiaries to take care of the tricycle, ensure its operational maintenance, and stick to the intended use to benefit the community.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Honorable Rohey John, described the support from the ECOWAS as instrumental, while urging the beneficiaries to continue to be more responsive to community impact and support The Gambia government's strategic plan in ensuring its national and international commitment in fulfilling the Less Developing Countries (LDC) target of reaching zero waste. She further encourages the beneficiary to work with communities to: promote reduce, reuse, and recycle to ensure that there is limited use of plastic.

The Hon. Minister further renewed her ministry commitment in putting the youths at the center of community development to harness their willpower in solving community problems. The minister has disclosed the strategic monitoring of performance that will be established to monitor the community's progress with the tricycle provided. A copy of the agreement has been given to the organizations as a policy document that will guide tricycle usage.

The Representative of ECOWAS Madam expressed her pleasure in working with the ministry to provide this aiding mobility for the communities to leverage on it to boast their impact. She encourages the beneficiaries to get the most out of it if they want such gesture to be more forthcoming . She expressed the ECOWAS Commissioner of Environment and Agriculture's commitment and keen interest in providing materials for the public to augment their practices in making the environment cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable.
