April 8th, 2011, marked the first celebration of following its
establishment through Resolution 70 at the Plenipotentiary Conference
(2010).

Today, the initiative is annually held on the fourth Thursday in April by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

Girls in ICT Day aims to encourage and empower girls and young women to pursue education and careers in the exciting and ever-growing fields of Information and
Communication Technology, in which women are globally still underrepresented.

Throughout the years, over 417,000 girls and young women have participated
in over 11,590 Girls in ICT Day celebrations across the globe. From
governments and national ICT regulatory authorities to ICT companies,
academic institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, students, and parents, everyone is
invited and encouraged to join the movement and celebrate International
Girls in ICT Day!

This year, the ITU has decided on the theme of : “Girls
shaping the digital future.” It highlights the vital connection between
technology and development, and the importance of digital accessibility. The
call for girls to step into leadership roles within the tech sector remains as
urgent as ever, as they continue to be underrepresented in this sector and in
internet usage, preventing them from accessing the opportunities of the digital age.
