🌱 How can digital inclusion create opportunities for women and girls while strengthening their rights?

Across four regions of The Gambia, APC member Jokkolabs Banjul worked with 400 women and girls to build practical digital skills rooted in their everyday needs.

From online privacy and digital safety to using WhatsApp for business, mobile banking and accessing information, the initiative showed how digital literacy can support greater autonomy and participation.

And the learning did not end with the workshops. By training 80 women as peer mentors and strengthening the skills of 40 community broadcasters, the project is helping knowledge continue to circulate within communities.

It's a wrap! 🎉 After two weeks of intensive bootcamps in and , we're proud to share that Phase II of our partnership with Internet Society on the Designing and Deploying Computer Networks Training has successfully reached 56 youths from these regions.

The week-long face-to-face sessions facilitated by certified trainee trainers in Phase I from Mansakonko and Basse, built on the virtual labs conducted from March to July 2026, equipping local youths with hands-on skills to design, deploy and sustain community networks while also emphasizing the importance of online trust and safety.

This initiative continues to drive youth empowerment and community development under the theme Connecting the Unconnected, Protecting the Connected.

Over the weekend, our youth team conducted a regional sensitization campaign as part of our APC funded project on Youth-Led Civic Engagement and Digital Advocacy, gearing up for The Gambia's Presidential Elections 2026.

In partnership with SHOAW Gambia, we engaged with youth and women groups in Sotuma Sire, Upper River Region (URR), discussing the vital roles of youth and women in political participation, combating misinformation and disinformation during campaigns and raising awareness about digital safety and cyberbullying during election periods.

Additionally, we met with community leaders and hosted a radio program focused on empowering youth and women for fair and safe elections.

Our Lead Poncelet Ileleji represented The Gambia as the National Expert at the Global Congress 2026 by the World Summit Awards. Over four inspiring days at Palais Wertheim, global innovators, policymakers, and digital leaders came together under the powerful theme “Scaling Digital Solutions: For People & Planet.” The conversations around Digital Sovereignty, , and inclusive digital infrastructure highlighted the urgent need to create technology that truly serves people and drives sustainable impact.

Beyond the sessions and discussions, the congress was a reminder that collaboration is the key to shaping a more inclusive digital future.

The West African Internet Governance Forum has ended.

High-Level Plenary 4 on “Regional Digital Single Market, Infrastructure Sovereignty and Coordinated Platform Governance” brought together regional policymakers, innovators and digital governance experts at the Main Auditorium of Miatta Conference Centre on Friday, 15 May 2026.

The session moderated by Poncelet Ileleji of Jokkolabs Banjul featured insightful contributions from Kumba Emily Fanday, Folake Olagunju of the ECOWAS Commission, Aminata Dembélé, and Rodrigue Guiguemde from Smart Africa.

Discussions focused on the urgent need for deeper regional digital integration across West Africa, with strong emphasis on infrastructure sovereignty, resilient connectivity, interoperable systems and coordinated platform governance.

Speakers highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration, harmonized policy frameworks and investment in digital public infrastructure as critical pillars for building a more secure, inclusive and sovereign regional digital ecosystem capable of driving innovation, economic growth and regional cooperation.
