The Vision Development Foundation (VDF) officially inaugurated 43 village Kafos in The Gambia’s Upper River Region (URR) on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in its mission to empower rural communities and strengthen grassroots development structures.
The inauguration ceremony, which drew a large gathering of local leaders, residents, and dignitaries, was a celebration of unity, progress, and collective effort. The establishment of the 43 Kafos — community-based organizations formed to spearhead local development initiatives — represents a bold step in fostering self-reliance, civic engagement, and participatory governance in the region.
In a deeply emotional and symbolic moment during the event, community members honored Mr. Modou Turo Darboe, the founder and executive director of the Vision Development Foundation, with the distinguished title of “Honorary Father.” The gesture was a heartfelt recognition of Mr. Darboe’s lifelong dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable and underserved Gambians through consistent humanitarian work and impactful development interventions.
Speaking on behalf of the community, elders and youth alike paid tribute to Mr. Darboe’s unwavering commitment to the region, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and poverty alleviation. Many recalled how his support had not only transformed individual lives but had uplifted entire communities, restoring dignity, opportunity, and hope where it was once scarce.
Mr. Darboe, visibly moved by the honor, expressed profound gratitude to the people of URR. He reaffirmed his foundation’s commitment to inclusive development and emphasized that the success of the Kafos lies in the hands of the people themselves. He encouraged community members to take ownership of the initiatives, work together, and continue to be agents of change in their own right.
The event concluded with cultural performances, testimonials from beneficiary communities, and a renewed pledge by the Vision Development Foundation to expand its outreach across the country — building on a legacy of compassion, service, and transformative impact.
