Recap of Today’s Inspiring Call with Dr. Bintou Dibba.

We had a productive and insightful session today with Dr. Bintou Dibba on the upcoming Diploma in Climate Action program. The engagement was truly fruitful, with participants asking thoughtful questions that were thoroughly addressed, helping everyone gain a clearer understanding of the program’s objectives and impact.

We are excited and look forward to the launch of this noble initiative in The Gambia the first of its kind in the country. This marks a significant step forward in building climate leadership and empowering changemakers for a more sustainable future.

This is how we wrapped up our end-of-year CoP call.

Highlights from the Launch of the Technical Report on the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Study in Banjul.

We are excited to share key insights from the newly launched UHI technical report, which provides an in-depth look at the rising urban heat challenges facing Banjul.

The study reveals a significant increase in AFOLU and LULUCF activities, alongside changes in urban thermal properties. These factors are contributing to higher energy demand, rising temperatures, and increased public discomfort, especially during peak heat periods.

This report marks an important step toward understanding how land use, climate, and urban development are shaping Banjul’s environment and how we can work together to create a more resilient, climate-smart city.

A must-read for policymakers, planners, researchers, and everyone concerned about Banjul’s future.

Let’s use this knowledge to drive informed action and sustainable solutions for our communities.

24th CoP Meeting!🇬🇲

Yesterday’s virtual meeting focused on advancing The Gambia’s NDC2 goal of reducing agricultural emissions through climate-smart agriculture.
**Mr. Omar A. Manjang**, CEO of Greenyard Agriculture, highlighted the importance of sustainable farming, challenges posed by climate change, and the need to strengthen soil quality, infrastructure, and engagement of youth and women.

Participants also revisited insights on the Jambur Solar Plant and its role in boosting climate action.

Together, we continue building a more resilient agricultural sector for The Gambia.

The National Climate Action Community of Practice in The Gambia held its 23rd virtual meeting in Banjul, bringing together members to discuss the Jambur Solar Power Plant and its vital role in advancing energy transition and achieving the country’s NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) targets.

Mr. Sulayman Njie, Electrical Engineer at TBEA delivered an insightful presentation on the Jambur Solar Power Plant, emphasizing its contribution to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing renewable energy generation.

The plant is a hybrid system with:

23 MWp solar PV capacity,
8 MWh battery storage,
Located near the Nyambai Forest.

The project, contracted to TBEA Electrical Company, covers engineering, procurement, construction, and three years of operation, after which it will be handed over to NAWEC. The plant currently feeds power into the Greater Banjul Area, boosting NAWEC’s operational performance and supporting The Gambia’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by 49.7% by 2030.

Together, we continue to drive climate action and sustainable energy development for a greener future in The Gambia! 🇬🇲

Today’s session focused on an insightful study on heat stress in schoolyards across the Greater Banjul Area, presented by Mr. Rodriguez Samba. The discussion highlighted the growing impact of urban heat islands and the urgent need to integrate environmental considerations into school planning.

Key takeaways from the presentation:
1. Analysis of land surface temperatures, vegetation coverage, and school typologies.
2. Strong correlation between vegetation density and heat stress levels.
3. The role of greener, cooler school environments in student well-being.

The meeting wrapped up with practical solutions, including:
> Tree planting initiatives in schools.
> Promoting sustainable practices despite limited resources.
> Encouraging school authorities to take ownership of environmental actions.

Together, we can make school environments healthier, greener, and more resilient. MRV for Climate Action

Rising Waters in Senegal Put Gambia on Alert

Water levels on the Gambia River are rising sharply upstream in Senegal, with the hydrological bulletin from the Water Resources Brigade in Tambacounda, eastern Senegal, reporting a jump of 78 centimetres at Kédougou, where the river begins near the Guinean border, and an increase to 7.50 metres at Gouloumbou, the key monitoring point just across the border from Basse.

Although these levels remain below official flood alert thresholds, such upstream surges are an early warning for communities in The Gambia, particularly in the Upper and Central River Regions, where water from Senegal typically flows downstream within days.

Authorities in Senegal have urged vigilance as the rainy season peaks, warning that further rises could increase the risk of flooding in riverbank settlements in The Gambia.

Our today's virtual CoP call focused on a presentation by Ms. Maimuna Jabbie about the Great Green Wall Initiative, an African Union project aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and building climate resilience through community involvement in West Africa. Ms. Jabbie shared insights into the initiative's progress in The Gambia, highlighting various restoration models, economic opportunities, and challenges faced in implementing sustainable projects. The discussion covered technical aspects of data collection, land use patterns, and potential solutions for environmental challenges, with participants engaging in questions about community engagement, alternative livelihoods, and policy considerations.
