NHRC, THE GAMBIA POLICE FORCE AND TANGO DISCUSSED PROTEST RIGHTS AND POLICING IN THE GAMBIA
Earlier today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) convened a successful high-level meeting at its office in Kotu, with the top command of The Gambia Police Force, as well as representatives of TANGO, including its Chairperson, Executive Director, and Programme Manager.
The meeting focused on current public order and policing concerns in the country, particularly issues relating to protests, processions, and public assemblies. Discussions also covered the recent incident involving the arrest, detention, and charging of members of Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), who had gathered at the Youth Monument at Westfield Junction on Friday, 8th May 2026, to commemorate their one-year anniversary.
The discussions were frank, constructive, and solution oriented. Participants exchanged views on the need to strike a proper balance between the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, responsible conduct by demonstrators, and effective policing of public assemblies in a democratic society. Concerns relating to the use of force and heavy-handed policing methods were also openly discussed.
Importantly, the meeting ended on a positive note, with all parties agreeing on the need for stronger collaboration, adherence to the rule of law, respect for due process, and the promotion of peaceful engagement during public assemblies, especially as the country approaches the election cycle.
Concrete next steps and practical measures were also discussed to improve policing practices, strengthen public order management, and enhance trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies, civil society, and the public.
All sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, protecting human rights, and promoting democratic governance in The Gambia.
The police delegation included Mr. Ebrima Bah, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) for Administration, Mr. Pateh Jallow, AIG for Operations, Mr. Tamsir Jasseh, Police Adviser, Mrs. Amie Nyassi, AIG for Crime Management, and Mr. Adeline Basangeh, AIG for the Police Intervention Unit. TANGO was represented by Mrs. Ndey Bakurin, the Executive Director, Mrs. Yadicone Njie Eribo, Chairperson and Mr. Modou Lamin Mbye, Programme Manager.
