The environment children grow up in shapes the future they inherit.

Not only the air they breathe or the water they drink.

But opportunities are available to them.
The stability of their communities.
The resilience of their livelihoods.

In The Gambia, environmental pressures including waste management challenges, climate variability, and resource constraints are already affecting daily life.

For children, these impacts are immediate and long-term.

At ChildFund, environmental sustainability is integrated into our work with communities.

From waste management initiatives, to climate awareness, to supporting sustainable livelihood practices, we are strengthening local systems that protect both people and the environment.

Because resilience is not only about responding to shocks, but also about preparing communities to adapt, recover, and continue to thrive.

And ensuring that children grow up in environments that can sustain them, not limit them.

Since the early 90s, our Early Childhood Education interventions have supported community-based early learning and development across communities in The Gambia, helping to lay a strong foundation for children’s growth and lifelong learning.

However, despite significant investments in the sector over the years, limited documented evidence has made it difficult to clearly demonstrate the long-term impact and outcomes of these interventions at scale.

Together with partners and stakeholders, we convened a Validation on the Impact Assessment of our ECE interventions to review findings, reflect on lessons learned, and strengthen the quality and relevance of future programming.

The exercise also provided an important platform for collective feedback and discussions to shape stronger, evidence-based interventions and policy engagement in the ECE sector.

• Food security and community development

The Vice President expressed satisfaction with the active participation of young people at both sites, encouraging them to take a leading role in national development efforts while reaffirming the Government’s commitment to supporting youth employment initiatives.

Our Country Director, Musukuta Komma-Bah, noted that empowering young people with practical skills and opportunities is key to building stronger and more resilient communities.

Reports of sexual violence against children in The Gambia are increasing. While some cases reach the police or make headlines, many more remain hidden, silenced by fear, stigma, and pressure to resolve abuse quietly. This points to a deeper child protection crisis rooted in harmful norms, weak enforcement, and systemic failures.

In a recently published op ed on POINT Newspaper Gambia, our Country Director, Musukuta Komma Bah, addresses this reality, emphasising a fundamental truth that is still too often ignored: a child cannot consent to sexual activity.

Our Country Director highlights troubling patterns, including abuse frequently committed by trusted adults, the pressure on families to withdraw cases or accept settlements, persistent victim blaming, and gaps within the justice and support systems that repeatedly fail child survivors.

Behind every case is a child whose safety has been violated. This is not a series of isolated incidents. It is a clear protection failure, one that reflects gaps in enforcement, accountability, and social norms.

Together with UNICEF Gambia, we handed over essential outreach and learning materials to the Regional Education Directorate for Region 5 North, to support distribution to Changemaker Clubs across 20 schools in the region.

With this, we are supporting young people to make better decisions, create positive change in their communities, and contribute to national development.

Together with National Nutrition Agency, under the Positive Playful Parenting initiative funded by the World Bank Group through the Gambia RISE Project, we are reviewing findings from the first quarter 2026 process monitoring to assess progress and identify key gaps.

The aim is to strengthen implementation and ensure that insights are translated into tangible, impact-driven outcomes, particularly in enhancing caregiver engagement and improving child well-being.
