The GYBN Transformative Futures Fellowship is open β€” and we're looking for you.

What if this was the year you went deeper β€” into biodiversity, into your own leadership, and into a global community of young people who are actively creating pathways to live in harmony within nature?

This is an opportunity for young people between 18–35 to deepen their engagement across four interrelated tracks, contributing to GYBN's ongoing work while gaining hands-on experience, mentorship, and reflective space to grow. This fellowship meets you where you are β€” whether you're just starting out or already active in this space, there is room to learn, contribute, and go further.

Four tracks. Four ways to contribute and grow:

🟣 Capacity Building β€” strengthen knowledge and learning across the network

🀝Community Building β€” foster connection, care, and collective action

🎺 Communication & Storytelling β€” amplify youth voices and bring biodiversity stories to life

πŸ”΅ Policy Support β€” get behind the scenes of biodiversity governance, supporting coordination, documentation, and engagement across GYBN's policy work.

If you're committed to creating an impact in the environmental sector and want to grow alongside a global community of young changemakers, there is a place for you here. 🌎

On this World Wetlands Day, the GYBN Gambia Chapter joins the people of The Gambia and the global community in celebrating the vital importance of our wetlands and reaffirming our commitment to their protection and sustainable management.

The Gambia’s wetlands including mangroves, estuaries, floodplains, rice fields, and coastal wetlands along the River Gambia are central to our nation’s environmental health, food security, and livelihoods. These ecosystems support fisheries, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and provide natural protection against flooding, erosion, and climate-related risks.

As a low-lying country highly vulnerable to climate change and sea-level rise, wetlands play a critical role in strengthening The Gambia’s resilience. They act as natural carbon sinks, regulate water systems, and sustain both rural and urban communities, particularly women and youth who depend directly on wetland resources.

Despite their importance, Gambian wetlands continue to face increasing pressure from unsustainable land use, mangrove cutting, sand mining, pollution, and climate variability. The continued loss and degradation of wetlands threaten ecosystems, livelihoods, and national development goals.

As a youth-led network committed to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability, the GYBN Gambia Chapter calls for stronger protection, restoration, and wise use of wetlands, guided by science, traditional knowledge, and inclusive governance. We emphasize the need for meaningful youth participation in wetland conservation, policy formulation, and community-based management.

On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to working with government institutions, local communities, civil society organizations, and development partners to safeguard The Gambia’s wetlands for present and future generations.

Wetlands are essential to life.
They purify water, reduce floods, and provide vital habitats for birds, fish, and many other species
Beyond their ecological role, wetlands are deeply connected to cultures, traditions, and ancestral knowledge that have guided communities for generations in living in harmony with nature.

On this day, we celebrate wetlands as spaces of life, resilience, and heritage and reaffirm the importance of protecting and sustainably managing these ecosystems for the future.

STATEMENT BY GYBN GAMBIA ON THE RECENT KILLING OF A CROCODILE.
The Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) Gambia expresses its profound concern and unwavering condemnation of the recent killing of crocodile and a hippopotamus last year purportedly for welcoming the President. This act not only endanger iconic wildlife species but also disrupt the delicate ecological balance upon which our communities and future generations depend.
Wildlife forms an integral part of our national identity, cultural heritage, and natural wealth. Every species contributes uniquely to the health of our ecosystems, the resilience of our landscapes, and the overall prosperity of our nation. The loss of any species especially those already vulnerable or endangered diminishes the richness of our biodiversity and weakens the life-support systems upon which all Gambians rely.
We respectfully call upon national authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to intensify efforts to prevent poaching, illegal wildlife killings, habitat encroachment, and all forms of wildlife crime. Leadership at the highest level is vital to ensuring that endangered species such as crocodiles and hippos receive the protection they urgently require.
As young people dedicated to conserving the biological diversity of The Gambia, we stand ready to collaborate with government institutions, civil society, local communities, and international partners to promote sustainable practices and foster a culture of respect for all forms of life. Let us unite in building a future where wildlife is valued and protected, where ecosystems flourish, and where The Gambia stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship.
The killing of wildlife species must stop. Our natural treasures must be preserved for generations to come.
