LCOY The Gambia 2026 School Outreach at Wannsee Basic Cycle School
On September 9, 2026, the LCOY The Gambia 2026 team conducted a school outreach at Wannsee Basic Cycle School to raise awareness about climate change and gather students’ perspectives for the National Youth Statement.
Mustapha, Contact Point for LCOY 2026, introduced students to LCOY and explained climate change and its impacts. Mariatou Jack, a student, highlighted rising sea levels as a serious threat to The Gambia’s coastal communities, while participants discussed erratic rainfall, drought, and coastal erosion and their effects on agriculture, fisheries, and livelihoods.
The session also explored waste management and recycling, with Isatou Camara emphasizing how discarded materials can be transformed into useful products and create economic value.
Students then worked in groups to identify key climate challenges affecting their communities within the greater Banjul Area, including flooding, poor waste management, heat waves and electricity challenges, air and water pollution, and unpredictable rainfall.
Participants identified proper waste disposal, recycling, and youth-led environmental action as important solutions.
The outreach concluded with a practical tree-planting exercise, during which students and the LCOY team planted two trees on the school premises, promoting hands-on environmental stewardship.
