The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) is pleased to inform its stakeholders and the general public that the President of the Association Mr Matarr Saine has departed The Gambia for Azerbaijan to participate in the United World Wrestling (UWW) Congress, scheduled for 23rd–26th October 2026.
This historic participation marks the
and international recognition of wrestling in the country.
The participation provides an important opportunity for The Gambia to strengthen its relationship with the international wrestling community, explore new partnerships, and contribute to discussions shaping the future of the sport globally.

Muhamadu Konteh is a 19-year-old Gambian wrestler born in the United States to a Gambian family. With six years of wrestling experience, he currently competes in folkstyle wrestling for Hunter College in New York in the 125 lbs (56 kg) weight category. Konteh is now looking to transition from folkstyle to freestyle wrestling, with the ambition of representing The Gambia on the international stage. His ultimate goal is to make his country proud and contribute to the growth and development of Gambian wrestling.

The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) proudly celebrates a significant milestone as Gambian-born wrestler Sulayman Bah represents The Gambia at the World U23 Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, USA.
Based in the United States, Sulayman was scouted by the Gambia Wrestling Association and subsequently expressed his willingness to represent his homeland on the international stage. His participation marks his first international competition representing The Gambia, opening an exciting new chapter in his wrestling career.
In consultation with the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), Sulayman is viewed as a promising athlete with the potential to represent The Gambia at the Olympic Games in the future.
The picture was taken today shortly after his official weigh-in. Sulayman is flanked by his coach, Ibragim Ilyasov, who is representing the Gambia Wrestling Association in Las Vegas to guide and support him throughout the championship.
This achievement reflects GWA’s commitment to identifying talent, engaging Gambians in the diaspora, and creating opportunities for our athletes to compete at the highest level.
We wish Sulayman Bah and his coach the very best as they proudly fly the Gambian flag on the world stage.

The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) has successfully concluded another edition of the National Wrestling Championship, marking a successive year of organizing the competition since the current executive took office.
Hosted by the KMC Wrestling Committee at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium from October 9–11, 2026, the championship brought together wrestlers from all seven regions of The Gambia in a celebration of sporting excellence, national unity, and cultural heritage.
West Coast Region emerged as champions, while Central River Region secured the runners-up position after an exciting contest.

Named in honour of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the championship was graced by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie; the President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), Mr. Bai Dodou Jallow; the Director of the National Sports Council, Mr. Mahmoud Jawla; and several other distinguished dignitaries.
The successful staging of this championship demonstrates GWA’s continued commitment to promoting traditional wrestling, identifying emerging talents, strengthening regional participation, and preserving one of The Gambia’s cherished sporting traditions.
Congratulations to West Coast Region for their outstanding achievement and to Central River Region for an impressive performance. Appreciation also goes to the KMC Wrestling Committee, all seven regions, stakeholders, and supporters who contributed to the success of this historic event

The President of the Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA), Mr. Matarr Saine, on Thursday 15th October, 2026 paid a courtesy call on the Moroccan Ambassador to The Gambia.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring partnership opportunities to promote the growth and development of wrestling in The Gambia through technical cooperation, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
The GWA remains committed to building strategic international partnerships to advance wrestling and create greater opportunities for Gambian wrestlers.

The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) proudly presents the President’s Flag National Wrestling Championship 2026, named in honour of His Excellency President Adama Barrow.
Wrestlers from all seven regions of The Gambia will come together to compete for national glory in what promises to be an exciting celebration of wrestling, talent, unity and our rich cultural heritage.
Venue: Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.
Dates: 9th – 11th October 2026

This championship is more than a competition; it is a platform to identify and develop future national team wrestlers, promote unity among Gambians, and preserve and promote our traditional sporting heritage.
