TB is not a disease of the past.
In 2024, about 10.7 million people fell ill with tuberculosis and 1.23 million died. Around a quarter of the world has been infected with TB bacteria. Most of those people are not sick and cannot spread TB — but without care, some will develop disease.
Untreated lung TB can spread to 10–15 people in a year through close contact.
The good news: diagnosis is faster than it used to be, treatment works, and since 2000 global efforts have saved an estimated 83 million lives.
