Empowering Change from Within: Savannah Alliance Ghana Trains Prison Officers for Inmate Transformation.

Savannah Alliance Ghana has taken another bold step in promoting rehabilitation and reintegration for inmates at Tamale Central Prisons. As part of our ongoing Educational and Life Skills Training Programme, we successfully trained five (5) dedicated prison officers to serve as facilitators for this transformative initiative.

With funding from KGL Foundation, the training focused on building the capacity of these Officers to deliver life-changing lessons in three critical areas:
1. Personal Development and Soft Skills; The facilitators were trained on how to guide short-term inmates through modules in self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and effective communication, aiming to prepare at the inmates for positive social reintegration.
2. Technical and Vocational Skills; With practical training in barbering, shoemaking, beadmaking, and soapmaking, the Facilitators are equipped to empower inmates with employable skills that offer real economic opportunities upon release.
3. Facilitation and pedagogical Skills; The selected Officers were equipped with effective teaching methods and tools to ensure an integrated and impactful delivery of the training content for the inmates.

This marks a key milestone in our commitment to HOPE BEYOND WALLS, not just reform but transform lives behind bars. We believe change is possible when support, skill, and hope come together from within and with this initiative, we’re making that a reality.

Tamale Prison Officers Trained To Tackle Inmate Mental Health Under Hope Beyond Walls Project

Thirty (30) prison officers at the Tamale Central Prison have received essential skills training to identify, manage, and respond to mental health challenges within the correctional facility. The training session focused on mental health assessment and early detection of psychological issues among inmates at the Tamale Central Prison
It was organized by Savannah Alliance Ghana with funding from the KGL foundation, as part of the ongoing Hope Beyond Walls Project.
It aligns with the broader objective of the project, which seeks not only to support inmates but to transform the institutional culture within prisons in Ghana. By empowering prison officers, the project ensures sustainability beyond direct service delivery.
This marks a major step in the implementation of the 12-month initiative aimed at improving the mental health and educational outcome of short-term inmates. By investing in the capacity of correctional staff, the project is laying the foundation for a more rehabilitative humane prison environment.
Project manager at Savannah Alliance Ghana, Desmond Puopelle Banye, noted that “this is not just a one-time session, it is part of a system-wide shift toward treating inmates with dignity and preparing them for life after incarceration. Officers who understand mental health become agents of rehabilitation, not just enforcement”.
Northen regional commander of the Tamale Central Prisons, DDP Joseph Asabre, said “this is an opportunity to transform the image of the prison system in Ghana in-line with the Nelson Mandela Rules”.
Mental health specialist for the project, Dr. William Frank Bill Koomsom, on his part stated that ”equipping officers with the ability to recognize and respond to mental health issues is crucial. They are on the front lines every day and can make the difference between silent suffering and meaningful support”.
Statistics show that approximately 10.4 million prisoners worldwide suffer from mental health-related issues. Ghana’s prison system, like many globally, faces significant mental health challenges. Overcrowding, trauma, and lack of access to professional care leave many inmates vulnerable. The Hope Beyond Walls project directly addresses these issues by integrating mental health care into everyday prison operations.
With continued support from the KGL foundation, the project will also provide direct counseling to inmates, deliver education and life skills training, and develop partnerships with health care providers and community leaders to support reintegration.
This training is a clear signal that mental health is no longer being sidelined in Ghana’s correctional agenda of the Ghana Prison Service. It’s being recognized, addressed, and integrated where it’s most urgently needed.

Hope Behind Walls: New Project Targets Mental Health and Education for Tamale Central Prison Inmates

A bold new project initiative, Hope Beyond Walls, has officially been launched at the Tamale Central Prison, aiming to transform the lives of short-term inmates through mental health support and educational programs.

Spearheaded by Savannah Alliance Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service and funded by the KGL Foundation, the year-long project will provide mental health assessments, counselling services, and life-skills training to short-term inmates. It also includes capacity building for Prison Officers to better identify and manage mental health issues within the prison population.

“Inmates face serious challenges that often go untreated, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress,” said Desmond Puopelle Banye, the Project Manager of Savannah Alliance Ghana. He further added that “the project is about giving them the tools they need to heal, learn, and successfully reintegrate into society.”

Beyond the direct services for inmates, the project will also strengthen partnerships with local NGOs, healthcare providers, and traditional authorities to ensure the programs can be sustained and expanded beyond its initial 12-month phase.

This effort aligns with Ghana’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of good health, quality education, reduced inequalities, and access to justice.

“Hope Beyond Walls is not just a project,” said DDP Joseph Asabre of the Tamale Central Prisons. “It’s a second chance for many young people who deserve to return to society stronger and better equipped.”

The launch marks a crucial step toward more humane, rehabilitative correctional services in Ghana, a shift that could reshape the futures of many who pass through the prison system.

KGL Foundation was created as the corporate social responsibility arm of the KGL Group and it is dedicated to building a stronger and more inclusive Ghana by engaging from the grassroots to government institutions to create sustainable and meaningful impact.

Breaking the Cycle: How ‘Hope Beyond Walls’ is Redefining Rehabilitation at Tamale Central Prison

In Tamale, a groundbreaking project titled Hope Beyond Walls has been launched at the Tamale Central Prison, setting a new standard for prison rehabilitation in Ghana. Funded by the KGL Foundation and implemented by Savannah Alliance Ghana, the project introduces a full-scale mental health and education initiative aimed at short-term inmates. Over the next 12 months, it promises not just to improve conditions within the prison but to give inmates real opportunities for a better life after incarceration.

At its core, Hope Beyond Walls is built on four key pillars, each critical to achieving sustainable reintegration and breaking the cycle of re-offending. The four pillars of the project include; mental health assessments and counselling, educational and life-skills training, capacity building for prison officers and finally building sustainable partnerships.

Hope Beyond Walls is not just another charity project; it’s an innovation of what correctional services in Ghana could look like. It reflects a profound understanding that true rehabilitation must treat inmates as people first, people with potential, dreams, and the capacity for transformation.

By focusing on mental health, skills education, staff development, and sustainable partnerships, this project is laying the foundation for a future where prisons rehabilitate rather than simply incarcerate.

As Ghana looks to strengthen its justice system and reduce recidivism, Hope Beyond Walls stands as a blueprint for meaningful, lasting change. And for the inmates at Tamale Central Prison, it offers something even greater—HOPE AND LIVE AFTER PRISON.
