We hope the Food and Drugs Authority Ghana would facilitate and support enterprises to be in business and expand for economic growth

Nine million homes sit empty across Japan right now and some cost less than a used car. 🏚️ In small rural towns the population keeps aging, and when elderly residents pass away their houses pass to their children. Most of those children already built careers and families in Tokyo or Osaka decades ago. Returning to a quiet village home rarely fits their life anymore.

So these akiya, meaning empty houses, get sold for next to nothing just to avoid taxes and upkeep costs. 🏠 It is a strange kind of inheritance, a house full of memories nobody wants to live in. Japan's countryside is quietly emptying out one family at a time. 🕯️

Ghanaian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) spend up to 30 per cent of their capital or profits on regulatory compliance, the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI) research has estimated.

Last week on GTV, Mr. Peter Bismark, our CEO, and one of the Entrepreneurs, Samiratu Sakibu of Mira Bakes had a conversation on business regulations in Ghana. An entrepreneur in the baking space could need 8 business operating documents including certificates, permits and licenses. Since 2019, Semiratu has fought the secondary regulatory institutions to obtain the necessary recognized certificates, permits and licenses but proven futile. Her story and many others have made businesses unable to expand and transition from micro to small and medium enterprises.

High bureaucratic burdens mean fewer micro-enterprises successfully scale into medium or large enterprises. ILAPI’s study shows that while some micro-firms become small businesses, far fewer achieve a full transition to a medium scale due to compounding regulatory friction.

 Overly punitive or complex regulatory environments discourage informal micro-enterprises from formalizing and growing out in the open.

Ms. Samiratu is still battling to operate legally. Our Business regulatory report shows how heavy licensing fees, multiple permits, and complex tax regimes consume vital capital that small businesses could otherwise use for reinvestment and expansion.
