Flooding is not “normal.”
It’s a warning about how we build, plan, and protect our cities.
In Accra and across Ghana, floods are destroying homes, livelihoods, roads, and dignity. But resilient cities are possible when nature and infrastructure work together.

Imagine cities with:
•Wetlands protected, not destroyed
•Green spaces that absorb rain
•Drains designed to actually flow
•Communities included in planning

Because flood resilience is not just engineering.
It is justice. It is safety. It is dignity.

What do you think is the biggest cause of flooding in your community?

Our article “Leaving No One and No place behind: Why Waste Pickers must be included in Ghana’s and Africa’s waste management future” has been published in the Climate Watch newspaper today.
Waste pickers are the invisible force behind cleaner cities, stronger recycling systems, and more sustainable communities. Yet many continue to work under unsafe and unrecognized conditions. A truly sustainable future for Ghana and Africa must include, protect, and empower waste pickers as essential partners in climate action, sanitation, and circular economy solutions.

Today is more than a celebration, it’s a call to act.

On Earth Day, we are reminded that the power to protect our planet is in our hands. From the energy we choose to the communities we uplift, every action shapes the future we will inherit.

Clean energy is no longer an option, it is a responsibility. A responsibility to our environment, to our communities, and to generations yet unborn.

At Alliance for Empowering Rural Communities (AERC), we believe that true climate solutions begin at the grassroots, where resilience is built, voices are heard, and sustainable change takes root.

Our power. Our planet. Our future.
