Africa has enormous potential for renewable energy, but turning that potential into reliable and sustainable energy requires more than ambitious targets.

The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) is pleased to announce the completion of its Sustainable Renewable Energy Framework, focusing on Wind and Solar Energy.

The framework presents a systematic review of national energy policies across Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Seychelles, and Botswana, examining the progress, challenges, and policy landscape shaping renewable energy adoption across these countries.

The review highlights several critical realities:

🔹 Fossil fuel dependency remains a major structural challenge.
🔹 Renewable energy ambitions continue to outpace implementation.
🔹 Financing gaps, grid limitations, and regulatory bottlenecks constrain deployment.
🔹 Energy access and energy security challenges remain uneven across countries.
🔹 Climate change is increasingly affecting energy systems and their resilience.
🔹 Stronger policy coherence and implementation are essential to translating targets into results.

At ASEC, we believe that **Africa’s renewable energy transition must be informed by evidence, strengthened by effective policy, and driven by practical action.

ASEC's Take on Ghana's 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review: Balancing Energy Security with the Green Transition

The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) welcomes Government's continued investment in Ghana's energy sector while calling for a more balanced approach going forward.

Key points from our review:

The proposed 1,200 MW thermal power plant will strengthen generation capacity, but renewable energy still accounts for only about 2 percent of Ghana's electricity mix, against a national target of 10 percent by 2030.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition's new name should be matched by corresponding budget allocations for renewables, storage, and green hydrogen.

ASEC is disappointed that the GHS 1 fuel levy was retained, and is calling for greater transparency on how the proceeds have been used.

LPG expansion is a positive step, but Ghana requires a comprehensive clean cooking strategy that extends beyond LPG.

The shift of GPP Train 2 to a private sector-led model should have been preceded by broader stakeholder engagement, with close attention paid to fiscal terms.

Ghana's energy future rests on four pillars: security, affordability, sustainability, and resilience.
