Galamsey: The Silent Akosombo Hydropower Plant Destroyer

When we discuss the impacts of illegal mining, attention often focuses on polluted rivers, degraded forests, and lost livelihoods. Yet one of the most critical threats remains largely overlooked: the growing risk to Ghana's hydropower infrastructure and energy security.

Our latest article examines how unchecked galamsey activities are accelerating sedimentation in the Volta Basin, threatening water quality, reservoir performance, and the long-term sustainability of the Akosombo Hydropower Plant—the backbone of Ghana's electricity system.

The fight against galamsey is not only an environmental imperative; it is an energy security imperative.

As Ghana pursues economic growth and a sustainable energy future, protecting our water bodies and hydropower assets must become a national priority.

We are pleased to announce the release of our Sustainable Hydrogen Framework.

This comprehensive report presents a multi-country assessment of the sustainable hydrogen landscape across 28 African nations, examining hydrogen production challenges, renewable energy infrastructure, policy readiness, technology capacity, financing opportunities, and environmental considerations.

The framework provides strategic insights and actionable recommendations to support Africa’s participation in the global green hydrogen transition while advancing industrial growth, energy security, and sustainable development.

As the world accelerates toward cleaner energy systems, Africa has a unique opportunity to position itself as a major player in the emerging hydrogen economy.

The future of sustainable energy in Africa will require bold policy action, investment, innovation, and regional collaboration—and this framework contributes to that important conversation.

We invite you to engage with the framework and join us in shaping Africa’s sustainable hydrogen future.
