From Training to Livelihood: Stories of Change in Gurubagu

Our team recently visited Gurubagu to assess how individuals are using the skills they learned during livelihood training.

Ayishatu Fatawu, who was trained in making sweet buns and donuts (bofrot), is now incorporating these skills into her daily life for income.

Asia Domteile, who led the soap-making group, is also applying her training. The group is making Azumah blow and other washing soaps, which has created new opportunities for earning money.

These early experiences demonstrate how practical skills can help build sustainable livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.

Through the Nature’s HeartBeat Project, we continue to support conservation-related livelihood opportunities that benefit local communities.

From Conversations to Possibilities: Engaging Soma and Jang

The Nature’s HeartBeat community consultations came to an end with meetings in Soma and Jang, where community members shared their views on livelihoods, challenges, and potential opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

People from the communities discussed the kinds of activities they rely on for their income, the difficulties they encounter, and the kinds of opportunities that could help increase household incomes and build resilience.

Throughout the three days, the main point that emerged was that sustainable conservation and sustainable livelihoods must go hand in hand.

Day 2 of the Nature’s HeartBeat community consultation took our team to the Nasoyiri and Jentilpe communities where valuable perspectives on livelihoods and local economic opportunities were shared.

The discussions aimed to understand the types of work people rely on, the difficulties they face in earning a stable income and building resilience, and the market opportunities that could help support more sustainable economic practices.

The conversations continue to remind us that protecting nature and improving livelihoods can go hand in hand when communities are actively involved in shaping the solutions.

Nature’s HeartBeat: Listening to the Murugu Community!

As part of the Nature’s HeartBeat Project, our organization a held face-to-face meeting with community members in Murugu to discuss sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The first session allowed us to directly hear from the community about their current ways of making a living, the difficulties they encounter, the market opportunities they see, and the areas where more support could help improve their income and ability to cope with challenges.

Our main goal was to look into different livelihood options that are market-based and connected to conservation.
These options aim to create economic benefits while helping to protect the Mole Landscape.

At PureTrust Foundation, we believe that sustainable development starts with understanding the needs of communities and working together to find solutions.

Growing together, learning together!

The Yapalsina Kuraa Tehisumah Farmer Group has taken another significant step in reinforcing their Community-owned Farmer Learning Fields by starting the production of sweet potatoes.

The learning fields serve as a Demonstration Farm for Conservation Agricultural Practices under the SMART Agric project.

Using the vines they already had, the group was able to plant 450 mounds.
And to finish the rest of the learning field, the members came together and decided to contribute GHS 300 to buy more sweet potato vines.

This action shows how strong community ownership can be when farmers put their own resources into the effort, they learn from one another and create more sustainable ways to support their livelihoods.

From vision to action!

Last month, the people of Daganaakura came together to draw their vision for the future of their community. Now, that vision is taking shape.

During our second Community-Led Development session, community members validated and adopted their five-year vision, mapped key stakeholders, established a Community Development Committee (CDC), and began planning actions to bring their aspirations to life.

One inspiring milestone?
The community has already mobilized GHS 8,000 towards renovating their temporary school and is preparing to begin work in August, a true demonstration of local ownership and collective action.

A vision for the future starts with the people!

For two days, the Daganaakura community came together to reflect, learn, and plan for a better future through a Community Visioning Workshop facilitated by PureTrust Foundation.

Community members, including traditional leaders, women, men, youth, children, and religious leaders shared ideas, discussed human rights, explored the importance of education and inclusion, and identified the changes they want to see in their community over the next five years.

The workshop created a platform for every voice to be heard and reinforced a simple but powerful message: communities are best placed to lead their own development.

The next phase will see the community validate its five-year vision, establish a Community Development Committee, identify partners, and begin turning their shared vision into action.

Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities one conversation, one plan, and one step at a time.

Planning, learning, and improving, every step counts!

Our team recently held a planning and review meeting to reflect on our progress and strengthen the way we deliver impact in our communities.

The meeting focused on reviewing our Agriculture Strategy and Baseline Study, discussing the GSA SHINE Nursery Project and the Nature’s Heartbeat Project, and sharing lessons from our recent engagement with the Daganakura community.

These discussions help us stay focused on what matters most: building resilient livelihoods, promoting sustainable agriculture, and ensuring our work continues to create meaningful change for the communities we serve.

Impact of Livelihood Trainings under the Nature's Heartbeat!

A recent monitoring visit to beneficiaries of the pastries training in Nabengu, North Gonja District, revealed encouraging results!

Some women are already producing and selling pastries locally. Notably, Madam Wasila is not only running her business but also training another community member through apprenticeship. She also plans to expand her products, including introducing bread to the community.
