In March, this year, we (Ghana Developing Communities Association - GDCA) took an important step towards shaping our future by convening a workshop to examine key factors shaping our operating environment as part of the process to develop a new five-year Strategic Plan (2027-2031).

Building on that foundation, we held a three-day Strategy Development Workshop in Tamale from June 17–19, 2026 bringing together Members of our Governing Board, Directors and representatives of our subsidiaries and units; School for Life Ghana, Changing Lives in Innovative Partnerships- CLIP, Dalun Simli Centre, and Radio, GDCA staff and representatives of our Danish partner; Ghana Venskab.

The workshop offered an opportunity to reflect on our journey, deliberate on our achievements, assess emerging opportunities and challenges, and chart a clear path for the future. We examined where we aspire to be over the next five years, identified our strategic priorities, explored how best to achieve our goals and considered the institutional capacities we must strengthen to maximise our impact.

Insights from the workshop will shape GDCA’s 2027–2031 Strategic Plan reinforcing our commitment to empowering communities and promoting inclusive development.

Last Friday, Ghana Developing Communities Association - GDCA held a send-off ceremony in honour of Alessandra Cardin, our European Solidarity Corps Volunteer from MTÜ Mondo, Estonia, as she concluded her deployment to us.

Alessandra, who hails from Milan, Italy, joined GDCA in October 2025 as our Women’s Digital and Financial Inclusion Advisor. During her time with us, she made significant contributions to improving the digital and financial literacy of a number of women in the Chahiyili and Gushe communities empowering them to enhance their livelihoods and participate more actively in the digital economy.

Beyond her core responsibilities, Alessandra proved to be a versatile professional supporting various programmes and activities across the organization. Her dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to contribute wherever needed made her an invaluable member of the GDCA team.

What stood out most, however, was her remarkable ability to embrace the local culture, build meaningful relationships and connect effortlessly with people from all walks of life. Her warmth and openness endeared her to colleagues, community members and partners alike.

Alessandra, as you embark on the next chapter of your journey, we express our sincere gratitude to you for your service, commitment and friendship. You will be greatly missed but you will always remain a cherished member of the GDCA family.

We wish you every success and fulfilment in your future endeavours.

From Alessandra Cardin, our volunteer from MTÜ Mondo under the European Solidarity Corps:

This week marked my very last field visit closing a beautiful and transformative cycle with our adult learners.

Looking back at where we started four months ago, the transformation is nothing short of extraordinary.

We began with communities where holding a pen or recognizing a letter was a mountain to climb. Today, during our final assessment, 100% of the present learners stood tall and signed the official EU attendance sheet completely on their own, writing their first and last names! ✍️🇪🇺

When we sat down together and asked them what has changed in their daily lives, their smiles and enthusiastic "YES!" spoke louder than any statistics:

📱 Now they can independently navigate their mobile phones, recognize names in their contact lists, and dial numbers.

🛣️ They can read and recognize names of their communities’ on road signs when traveling.

🗣️ They can engage in basic English interactions and greetings with strangers, breaking down long-standing barriers.

Working with adult learners requires patience, respect, and deep empathy. They taught me that education isn't just about textbooks; it’s about dignity.

Leaving them was hard but knowing that mothers and fathers are now studying alongside their children, and seeing them ready to invest their own savings into keeping these classes alive, fills me with pride.

As a beautiful sign of trust and appreciation, the community presented me with a traditional fabric and Guinea Fowl eggs.

I might be leaving the field but I have left my personal contact information with them to ensure I can keep encouraging them from afar.

Thank you, Chahiyili and Gushei. You gave me far more than I could ever teach you. ❤️🌍
